okay this is a long shot but the primary machinist at the university I work at is taking a 6-month leave of absence, so we're going to be hiring a replacement to try and cover the gap, so if you're a machinist in Canada who wants to live in Kelowna for 6 months, or know somebody like that just let me know and I'll pass the job application on to you

You know I wonder if not safe for bus would be a good replacement for not safe for work, since it's been pointed out that the standards of what's safe in different types of work very hugely.

I just want to be able to browse Mastodon on the bus and not worry about having stuff on my phone screen that will get me in trouble, so I can save looking at those pictures for at home.

me, reading about space battleship across on Wikipedia

Wikipedia: The role was given to Leiji Matsumoto, had at an earlier stage declined an offer, due to his desire to have complete creative control.[7] Matsumoto overhauled the story, designing the titular ship after the IJN Yamato, its crew, and the Wave Motion Gun, which came from Sexaroid, an erotic comedy manga written by Matsumoto in 1968.[8]

TIL that the wave motion gun came from an erotic comedy

Ok,I can't edit it but I recently posted that bleach and ammonia will make chlorine gas, so don't do it. They actually make chloramine.

Chloramine will still kill you do not mix bleach and ammonia.

I love the idea of more cycling infrastructure, by just can't imagine being tired all the time from biking up hills every time I want to go anywhere.

I'm kind of assuming that all the cycling advocates are from places that are generally flat, or who enjoy exercise.

but I would advocate for dedicated bus lanes, streetcars, etc to bypass gridlock before bike infrastructure.

I convinced my scientific society today to ask everyone who submits a video to their video library to license it under a creative Commons license, they'll make it way easier to use them for teaching and education in the future!

If anyone knows acoustics, I'd love to know why music sounds better when I put my Bluetooth speaker on the top shelf.

or for example why does it sound better when I turn it up but move it further away so it's perceptually the same volume then if I play it quietly and close to me.

I know it probably sounds better in the lab because it's all echoey and big

This is GREAT: A way to inject a drug once, and have it deliver the right dose for months, rather then relying on daily injections or pills: https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/06/the-one-shot-drug-that-keeps-on-dosing/

Roomie has been having problems with her Thunderbird mail client, which is no shock given Mozilla's kinda been making noises that they don't want to bother with it or Firefox these days either. She's settled on BetterBird, and I thought hey, maybe I should look for something like that too.

Spent 10 whole minutes searching for a Thunderbird alternative for Linux before I remembered that I already had Evolution installed.

Tech genius, I am.

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@Nezchan almost entirely user interface stuff apparently, and modernizing the code so it's easier for them to maintain it.

they're really happy about ripping out stuff that was written for Firefox and kind of slapped into Thunderbird because they didn't have enough funding to do it themselves in 2006.

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@Nezchan huh weird, the Thunderbird team apparently has gotten a lot more funding lately and has like been putting out a podcast about all the new awesome things they're doing with it

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@Nezchan they had an interview with the UI person who was very very excited about being able to redo the procedure for setting up a new account to make it easier

Currently working on random generation of atmospheres. I will define a bunch of molecules with weights determining how common they are and how concentrated they can be. I will have to look into factors that determine when a planet can hold an atmosphere, and maybe some weird interactions between molecules (like hydrogen being flammable and stuff, but that's for later)... Little abstract of a test down below, I love the level of abstraction c:

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@nyrath @claras_universe this isn't my area of chemistry, but yes that's the thing. I think it's technically the density, but for ideal and near ideal gasses those scale together.

This is why helium is a finite resource on earth, once you let it out, it just keeps going up.

@aeva Oh true; Derek Lowe did some really good blog posts on the topic about ten years ago, wish I could find them now

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@aeva Chemistry has been fighting with that problem for decades, if not longer. It is hard to get negative results published, and even if you do, you aren't going to get cited, as what will people say?

"We didn't use the reaction described in citation 18, as we read the paper and found out it didn't work."

Considering how hard it is to catch birds— I think one “in the hand” would be worth a lot more than two in the bush. Pica agrees with much enthusiasm (and isn’t allowed outside alone because of it)—

Canageek,
@Canageek@wandering.shop avatar

@futurebird I want to see a survey of ornithologist now to work out how MANY birds in the bush one in the hand is worth, sorted by sub-field (since I could see the answer being very different for the person that studies eagles vs songbirds)

if anyone has advice on living with asthma please let me know, and I think it's finally time to start using the steroid inhaler my doctor gave me a prescription for when I was having constant attacks

I do love how many lore errors can be fixed by saying "....and that person is bad at geography/history" WHICH IS TOTALLY VALID.

When I was in high school in 2002 I knew someone who had only just learned Afghanistan is in the middle east, and not South America.

Otherwise smart people will make stupid mistakes like saying south when they mean north, or will do some quick mental math with dates and make a mistake.

(Yes, I've been reading someone doing a deep dive into MtG lore)
