How do people actually dumpster dive to get free food? Are there any other cheap/free ways like this to get food?

My local food bank can only provide 8 packages with referrals every time before you run out, and I have, but my situation hasn’t improved financially due to various set backs and I’m struggling to feed myself. I’ve heard that supermarkets throw out massive amounts, but have never been in a position where dumpster diving...

Carrolade,

I’ll second this. I’ve never tried dumpster diving, but I have been an employee that helped out before.

If there is no store policy against it, it’s not much trouble to sort the still-decent stuff into a particular bag, and leave that one bag outside the dumpster instead of throwing it in.

Just go in when its slow, buy something preferably, and while you’re there ask an employee if it’s okay with the store if you do some diving and that you won’t make a mess. If they seem friendly, you can ask when/how would be the best time to do it. Probably works better with a smaller, locally-owned place than a big corporate chain. I’d recommend a small coffeeshop or bakery.

The Biden Administration's Hypocrisy On World Press Freedom Day [Kevin Gosztola | May 3, 2024 | thedissenter] (thedissenter.org)

United States President Joe Biden marked World Press Freedom Day by calling for the “immediate and unconditional release of all journalists who have been put behind bars for simply doing their jobs.” He added, “Journalism should not be a crime anywhere on Earth.”...

Carrolade,

When you’re revealing hundreds of pages, and only 20 are shit voters need to know about, you dun fucked up. Can’t leak the unimportant-to-voters but still secret shit.

I mean, should I go on discord and post modern tank schematics? That’d be “journalism”, right?

Carrolade,

The right isn’t nazis for disagreeing. They’re nazis when they do the racist shit. Nobody calls them nazis for wanting lower taxes.

Problem is when the right wants to say they don’t harbor nazis, when they absolutely do.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

Carrolade,

That’s only true in select places. Most people in one place can have different experiences from most people in a different place, due to the places being different environments with different populations.

The majority of the internet is definitely among the places you’ve described, though.

Source: I’ve lived in both types.

Carrolade,

That’s just incorrect. It’s pretty common not to find out until you’re talking about what to eat. I would imagine you’ve met vegans that you simply don’t know are vegan yet.

Carrolade,

Very fair. My core point remains that it’s all about that

in many places

though. If you live in a region with more than a handful of vegans, you find very differently. It’s a personal pet peeve of mine when people try to paint their own experiences as “most people”, and all of any group as being just like those members they have met and are thinking about. It completely ignores several distinct internal mental biases, that are themselves making our world shittier because they lead to inaccurate conclusions, and are fairly natural unless you’ve received training to be made aware of them.

Statistical selection bias, confirmation bias, etc.

Because of this, it’s less a joke to me, and more just a pain in the ass. And I’m a happy carnivore that also does not like being preached to.

Carrolade,

Eh. Some of those are good excuses. Buboes are probably not a very good look, for instance.

Carrolade,

Imagine that kinda sucks for a pilot. A ship is at least moving fairly slowly, so you have time and plenty of space to do your charting the old fashioned way. Might even be kinda fun for the first few times, a chance to actually use that skill for once. A plane would have a tougher time of it, unless it has some inertial navigating system or something.

Carrolade,

I am not a pilot or aviation watcher, so I don’t know. Makes sense.

Carrolade,

That’s a good point, we have very few active lighthouses in the US anymore.

Carrolade,

Why are “hallmarks”, “radicalized” and “rushed” all in quotes? I could see an argument for radicalized, but hallmarks of terrorism is pretty standard stuff, and rushing is just a basic English language verb, synonymous with running. Odd to emphasize them as quotes.

Carrolade,

Then a lot more should be within quotes. How do they know he was armed with a knife, were they there watching?

Carrolade,

A claim is a claim. The attacker “rushing” is no different from the attacker being armed with a “knife”. Both are quotes from the police.

Carrolade,

You responded to me, I am defending my statement.

The article is inconsistent with standard practices, by only selectively putting quote marks around certain parts of officers claims. Apparently pointing this out bothers you.

Carrolade,

Yeah, you’re just pulling shit out of your ass. If you’re claiming “an authoritative source” backs your argument, it’s on you to support your claim instead of tossing out “do your own research” accusations.

Carrolade,

Uh huh. Or you’re just making up bullshit to obscure the very simple fact that the article features some officer claims in quote marks and other officer claims in no quote marks, which is not actually standard practice or taught in any high school.

Carrolade,

Still not seeing how “rushed” is any different from other claims. Either dude runs at you or he doesn’t.

Carrolade,

Exactly. Marketing generally doesn’t try to speak to your rational forebrain. It’s going for your subconscious, by design. It’s why ads can be so random and still retain efficacy.

Carrolade,

Anti-consumer rules…? What are those? Sounds like communist propaganda to me. All hail the corporate overlords job creators!

Carrolade,

It’s not that everything is about race, as much as it is that race does exist, and is something a great many people pay attention to. Wanting to ignore this and pretend nobody does and nobody should talk about it is disingenuous and sneaky.

Carrolade,

Yeah, I think that’s just a Russian, judging from the comment history and writing style.

Carrolade,

No, but they do have very distinctive speech patterns and opinion sets. And are certainly present within the global internet.

Try reading his reasons for the Russo-Ukrainian War in a Russian accent and you’ll see what I mean.

US intelligence: Putin spends record amounts on military over 'paranoid fear' of West limiting Russia's power (kyivindependent.com)

"Putin continues to believe that Russia is under threat and almost certainly assumes that a larger, better-equipped military will convey that opinion to Western and domestic audiences," Director of U.S. National Intelligence Avril Haines said.

Carrolade,

Eh. That’s what he says. What he thinks inside his own head is privy only to him, not any of his inner circle or US intelligence. I have a feeling what he actually thinks is “If I can pull this off, I could be better than Catherine the Great. Maybe they could call me Putin the Amazing”.

Carrolade,

That’s the whole point of obfuscating it in the first place. If you come out and say “Jews who control the world want to force everyone to eat bugs”, you sound like an idiot. So, you give it a candy coating to make it go down better, and hope a certain percentage will eventually “do their own research” and come to your desired conclusion.

It’s the most strategically sound method you can come up with to perpetuate the conspiracy theories in the modern day. It’s similar to how cults don’t start the recruitment process by walking up to you and going “Hey, want to join a cult?”
