My parents are devoted members of Cowboy Church. I went once while visiting. It was covid times but TX had no mask mandate. Immediately, a man who I never met told me to take off my mask.

The pastor started the sermon with a sexist, homophobic joke that included rape.

He had a gun and said the world deserves god’s violence because there are trans ppl.

17: Do you draw out maps/floorplans/diagrams/etc. for key set pieces in your writing?

Nah. I look at a lot of maps online to get my descriptions as accurate as possible (cities, streets, parks, restaurants).

For a scene at Folsom Street Fair (San Francisco’s annual bdsm and leather culture fest), I found online someone’s video of their day at the fair in the late 1990s.

I watched the hell out of the hours-long vid to get a feel for the locale.

Wow, writers are weird.

This morning's task. Writing a teenage angst scene when the teenager is question is a raccoon. I'm not a raccoon, and it has been decades since my teenage years, so this will be a challenge!

@Jgmeadows here’s a tip, if you’re interested: Raccoons love shrimp. And they get hissgrowly if another raccoon tries to budge in on their shrimp.

The cloaked figure reached out its large fist, fingers down. 8yo Aaron offered his small palm. The figure placed a toy horse in the boy’s hand. Not one of those cheap plastic ones w bent legs that won’t even stand up in thick carpet. It was from wood & painted shiny black.

Aaron ran a finger over the horse’s ribs. It looked so real he expected the horse to start breathing. He looked up to thank the figure. No one was there.

Today, Aaron is 50. He still has the horse.

@Frances_Larina @leyrer Yeah, job security is important. Living under a guillotine is stressful. Not sure if remote workers feel more or less secure.
I think the topic here is that many workers are voicing that they prefer remote/hybrid work, but many employers are refusing to listen.

Writing is like that scene in Apollo 13 when Hanks is planting his feet at the manual joystick to “keep the moon in the window” during a crucial course correction.

Sitting down, planting my feet, and placing my fingers on the keyboard is like plugging into the universe.
