Soon their tiny nymphs will hatch from the eggs laid in slits in thin tree branches, drop to the ground, and dig in for their thirteen-year sojourn. By the time they hatch, the generation that spawned them will already be gone.

What the heck is an allotment?

I get it’s a patch of land somewhere you get to use for gardening, but that’s where my understanding leaves off.

Who owns the land? Who administers the allotments? How are they assigned? For what term? How much does it cost? How big is an allotment? How far from your home? What can you do with an allotment? Do you know your allotment neighbors? Is there inter-allotment conflict?

I’m really unconvinced by that argument that “just 60 companies” are responsible for the climate crisis. Because (cement companies aside, kind of), we’re talking about energy companies. Or energy state-owned enterprises. Fossil energy.

And that is THE input to the rest of capitalism that keeps it running.

What does isolating those companies from the rest of the capitalist system of production and consumption actually tell us? Zilch, except that fossil fuel extraction is a concentrated sector.
