I think it's kind of weird how front and center the 80s D&D cartoon characters are in the artwork for the 2024 revisions when the majority of 5e fans weren't even alive when they aired.

Craig,
@Craig@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon I agree. It makes me wonder if they're worried about losing older players and/or if they make up a larger portion of the market than typically thought, or if someone like Chris Perkins just misses the cartoon and wanted to add it.

Craig,
@Craig@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon That could be it, but the younger gamers I know had never even heard of it until I mentioned it. Then again, they're not very active on social media either (which is counter - intuitive for me).

@Tim_Eagon Now it's confirmed!

If Wizards hadn't lost me already, their "Collectible Alt-art Cover" would have done it.

Pick one gods-damned cover.

This isn't the 1990's and you aren't a comic book company. Alt covers didn't work at $3.00 a pop. It ain't gonna work at whatever astronomical price gouge you're going with, ya greedy bastards.

Craig,
@Craig@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon @DM_Zeppelin I haven't purchased anything recently, but I'm with Tim, I usually like the alt covers better. I also liked that they were the same price, but you could only get them at local game stores. I thought it was great that they supported game stores that way. Did they change that? If so, that's lousy.

Though I've been drifting away from for a while now, it's still feels really weird to be completely uninterested in the latest releases. I mean, not even a twinge of FOMO.

Craig,
@Craig@dice.camp avatar

@chgowiz @Tim_Eagon You're not alone. My friends and I have been discussing that we have so much old material we still really want to play. Not to sound grim, but we realize that we're not going to be able to play it all before we die. We're more focused on playing all the old things we want to finish rather than getting new things. That said, I don't hate a lot of the new ideas that a lot of old timers seem to bemoan. It's not "I hate the new stuff, so I'm not playing."

Craig,
@Craig@dice.camp avatar

@chgowiz @Tim_Eagon I'll add that there are lots of things I prefer about older editions, too. I also want to support game developers, so I still occasionally back things. The truth is I don't have big expectations of playing them.

Craig,
@Craig@dice.camp avatar

@pteryx @Da_Gut @libraryogre @bedirthan @Tim_Eagon @dragoncrown Sorry for chiming in late. I liked PrCs. They added more mechanical weight to RP class concepts over kits. E.g. "blade-singers are powerful," and then we all laugh when the 1st level character is dropped in round 1. I felt the minimum requirements and higher entry level meant those classes better matched their rep. That said, they could be OP or be so tedious to qualify that it didn't feel like an organic decision for the character.

Craig,
@Craig@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon @pteryx @Da_Gut @libraryogre @bedirthan @dragoncrown I agree with all of that. Some of the requirements were weird, too. Almost as if WotC said this PrC is overpowered, let's add these 3 random feats as an entry requirement to balance it out. I think all of that takes away from some wonderful PrCs that were well-designed both mechanically and from a RP perspective.

I think calling the multitude of playable human-likes in an RPG "species" is POTENTIALLY much better than calling them "races".

But as soon as you do that, you're saying overtly that this is a biological grouping, and therefore that traits assigned to them are biological in nature, and you should know that.

If you then assign cultural traits to a species without calling them out as such, you have made... Let's call it... an error.

Craig,
@Craig@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen Personally, I like species best. I also agree with you about clarity when it comes to intrinsic biological traits and cultural practices. That problem is going to be there whatever term is used, unless it's addressed.

Anyone have any experience with Kobold's Midgard setting? Any thoughts or recommendations? I'd love to hear (read) them!

@slyflourish @unordinarytales I'll definitely check it out. Thanks!

    @ericmpaq @Tim_Eagon @LeviKornelsen Just wanted to jump in and say thanks for this conversation. They remind me how much homebrew was in early D&D. I started w/ 1e in the early/mid-80s and we always had individual initiative. In fact, it was by segment. In my city, you'd join a random game and they were playing it that way. It had spread organically from someone. It was so prevalent, it was decades later that someone pointed out to me that wasn't actually the rule.

    Craig,
    @Craig@dice.camp avatar

    @Tim_Eagon @ericmpaq @LeviKornelsen Likely the same. I'm sure it was inspired by something even though I never found its original source. It remains my favorite system of all time. Everyone essentially acted at once. It was chaotic and wild, but a lot of fun.

    One thing I miss about weapon differentiation in D&D is that giving out weapon proficiencies by culture now is meaningless.

    All X learn to use a short sword has no mechanical benefit unless the character is a sorcerer.

    Only martial weapons change the mechanics.

    Maybe the answer is a damage bonus due to familiarity?

    Craig,
    @Craig@dice.camp avatar

    @bedirthan I share your feelings.

    Hey fans, I got a notification today from a comic shop that I've ordered from in the past. They have issues 2, 6, 7, and 8 available for really cheap! I already own copies and I'm not looking to flip any of them, so I thought it would be of interest to other collectors and fans:

    https://www.mycomicshop.com/

    Dungeon (Magazine) 2 FN 6.0 $12.00

    Dungeon (Magazine) 6 FN- 5.5 $11.00

    Dungeon (Magazine) 7 FN+ 6.5 $13.00

    Dungeon (Magazine) 8 FN+ 6.5 $13.00

    Craig,
    @Craig@dice.camp avatar

    @slyflourish Here's mine. It's fairly simple. I've been using some version of a 3-ring binder and page protectors. Here's the current version with stickers. It includes relevant rule excerpts, templates added to monsters they're likely to encounter or be used in summoning spells (3.5 is our most common edition), etc. Anything that may prevent delays.

    Posting this here as motivation to keep going...

    The elements of a campaign story arc are more or less in place, and I'm now dedicated to finishing a playable first module for Levels 1-2 (AD&D 1st ed).

    Further to my unhealthy obsession with the dark planes of existence, it's a storyline revolving around a rift leading to The Abyss!

    I give you... The Infernal Chronicles!

    IC1 Harbingers of Doom
    IC2 Coven of Shadows
    IC3 The Veil Beyond
    IC4 Lord of Chains

    Wish me luck!

    @chaoticneutral Wow. 1e and the Abyss? You didn't want to make it easy on yourself. 🙂

    My daughter is a big Friends fan, so my wife got her a bag of Friends-themed conversation hearts for Valentine's Day. One of them says "On a break," which seems to send mixed messages.

    Craig,

    @Tim_Eagon I didn't know they had such a thing. I can think of a few people that would appreciate them. Perhaps not the "on a break" heart.

    Hey , looking to cook more at home in the new year. Hit me with your best, easy to make and fast recipes. Needs to appeal to a picky 12-year old and ideally to an even pickier 5-year old. Can’t use seafood, as my wife hates it.
