Just rewatched Beasts of the Southern Wild and goddamn if that isn’t one of my favorite movies of all time. I am aware of hooks’s criticism and I respect it, but for me the film’s magical depiction of the chaotically churning and burning cauldron of life and death far exceeds the tropes it may contain.
It only just now occurred to me that the song My Favorite Things is about dissociation. I wonder if that’s why it resonated so much with Coltrane. #jazz
@mrcompletely Hm, the premise of the lyric is “when something unpleasant happens, I simply think about a pleasant thing instead, and then I don’t feel so bad.” It’s pretty straightforward. No part of it talks about other ways of handling bad feelings. As far as Coltrane, I was stretching a bit. He constantly searched for new ways of expressing the inexpressible, and that led him to various drugs and religious thought. I wondered if he struggled with quotidian “reality” and pain.
I’ve taught my cat to ring a bell when he wants food. I suppose most people would think he rings it all the time, but no! He just hunkers over the bell, waiting, watching, relishing his newfound center of power. #CatsOfMastodon
Weird! I just got a banner notification on here that I got an encrypted notification. Actually it showed up again while typing this, screenshot attached: @MonaApp
@Cyrus Sorry, I guess it’s a different issue. Currently, the solutions are: in the Settings app > Mona > Notifications, either turning off notifications completely, or enable at least one type of notification alerts (lock screen, notification center or banner).
As a #drummer I like to talk shop about #drums, but the active forums for that are heavily loaded with reactionary old white men, including the moderators. The amount of blatant bigotry is ridiculous, especially because they are all very skilled at using euphemisms so they don’t break the usual rules against politics and religion. We can be talking about the thickness of the plating on a certain era of metal shell, and somehow they manage to insert coded racism, every time.
@mlawton Right? No adult is surprised that we have differing opinions, but the fact (IME) that the overall environment is getting worse is depressing. I wonder if #drums are a more exaggerated case because the trend is toward samples, loops, and triggers, so people clinging to real/vintage drums tend to be pig headed old-schoolers.
