Are there any types out there that can offer me an answer to an issue I'm having?

My Mac wouldn't upload to websites using either Safari or Firefox. Tried searching for an answer, but nothing came up, so I posted on /r/macOS.

A reply I got there suggested manually changing the MTU rate in network settings to 1280, and that if that worked then something is up with our network.

Well, it worked.

Thing is, apart from this, I don't think there are any other issues with the network. Thinking about it, the uploading problem came along a week or so after we switched ISP, so it's possible that the two are connected.

I guess what I'd like to know is: is it a problem if I just leave a manual MTU setting?

TIL it's considered passé to use the word 'banger' with regards to a song. Richard Osman has apparently banned it and as we all know he is in charge of the Engerlish language. However I use banger quite a lot. So now have to come up with a pithy word that hyperbolically highlights my enthusiasm for a piece of music. Can we bring back Nathan Barley? That song is well Mexico.

Just spent an hour working out how to get Excel to tell me exactly - to two decimal points - how little I’ve done towards a Big Task that’s looming over me.

Which is productive, I guess.

@econads He certainly had his ways. As far as he was concerned, none of it really mattered, and no one was really going to be hurt if he didn’t do his job properly.

And yeah, no one did.

You’ll no doubt be pleased to know that I’ve now brought the amount done up to 18.23%.

My brain has rounded that up to 20% from 10%, so today alone I’ve completed 10% of the Big Task. But in reality there’s quite a lot to do.

@econads Yeah, this is where I am with it.

If I don't do my job adequately, people could get injured or killed. The chances are vanishingly small really, but not zero, so I can't let myself just not bother.

The Big Task is now 25% complete, all because I procrastinated doing it by taking the time to visualise how much needs to be done.

This morning I kinda felt like I wasted that hour, but the fact is, I've done more on that job today than I have in the 8 months since I first took it on.

Why yes, I do have #ADHD, why do you ask?

The general manager just took a call in the office kitchen from a customer who wasn’t happy at how long a job is taking.

I asked him how much of his day is spent placating angry customers.

“Oh, about 50%. Because we’re shit”

The prevailing belief around the company I work for is that we could be a damn sight more efficient if we had access to better tools and equipment, but the MD isn’t willing to spend out the money because he doesn’t want the company posting high profits.

I don’t know much about the tax affairs of the quietly wealthy, but this sounds about right to me.

And yeah, so far as I understand it, a good way to offset your tax bill is to invest in the company - by purchasing better tools and equipment, and training up staff. But that would have the effect of making the company more efficient, which would have the effect of making the tax bill higher.

So the boss keeps things tight, always pleading poverty and never willing to put his hand in his pocket unless forced to at gun point.

This is all plausible to me.

@Bez_Lightyear I can't imagine he'll sell this place. I get the impression that he enjoys the control too much. He's 70 and doesn't appear to have any plans for retirement, so the company'll just keep on keeping on, churning through disgruntled employees until he has a heart attack at his desk.

@econads Yeah, but the trouble is (as far as I can tell) the more he invests, the more the profits will be because we’ll end up making more money, so he’ll have to invest more, and so on, and so forth.

So we end up with a bunch of employees who do the bare minimum and grumble about everything the boss does. And I can’t blame them.

A couple of years back, Erica won a Peabody award for her episode "Finn & The Bell", a look at the story of Finn Rooney, a 17yo who took his own life, and the many ways in which he touched the small Vermont community he lived in.

The reason I bring up a podcast episode from two years ago is that the latest episode is a return to it, with a ten minute catch up with Finn's mother. It's a beautiful, heartfelt conversation with a woman who's slowly coming to terms with something so awful.

Erica is a master at capturing conversations, of drawing people into trusting her, and seemingly forgetting that there's a microphone between them.
