30/5: Are you comfortable writing from the POV of a child? Written any?

I've done so from time to time, and have been perfectly comfortable.

5/26: Would you consider writing a guide to your work, e.g. for aspiring writers?

No. I'm not a teacher. I mentored intensively, three novelists, one at a time for about three years each. Those working relationships were rich and enjoyable. But that was then. I'm old and sick now, needing all my remaining energy to finish my final projects, so teaching isn't in that mix. But I wish young (in the trade) writers all the very best.

May 23: What gets in the way of your writing?

My chronic health condition. The brain fog caused by constant pain and illness.

318 — What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

Freedom from the brain fog that's a near constant symptom of my chronic illness and pain.

May 16. What's your target audience? Why?

My novels and short stories are science fiction and fantasy. Although I've never set out to produce literary fiction, two or three editors over the years have remarked that my writing is literary SFF. The tagline I came up with a long time ago and have stuck to because it's real, is: "I write what I love for readers who love what I write."

20/3: one writer you admire the most?

Iain Banks, for his clever mainstream fiction, his brilliant science fiction written as Iain M Banks and especially the superb Culture series, and for living honestly by his socialist principles. He was a wonderful person. I miss him dearly.

The UK has fallen to its lowest-ever position in Transparency International’s corruption perceptions index, which ranks countries by experts’ views of possible corruption in public services.

The UK fell from 18th (out of 181 countries) in 2022 to 20th in 2023, its lowest position since the research was revamped in 2012. It means that, according to the research, Britain is seen as more corrupt than Uruguay and Hong Kong.

Behold the sunlit uplands of Brexit!

@cstross It's what we voted for. Not me, and not you, but millions of people have voted for this at every general election since 1979. I don't blame the corrupt politicians and officials any more than I blame other vermin for doing what they do. It's what they are. It's the millions of unthinking fools who put them there carrying the blame for this.

Do you have an epilogue in any of your writing? How do you feel about them?

Only in one of my novels, Storywalker. It's a where-are-they-now? chapter, a catch-up with the books's big cast of characters. I enjoyed emotional warmth while writing it, and some readers have said they share the warmth.

If someone had told me ten years ago, the United States would have a presidential election in 2024, giving American voters the choice between democracy and autocracy, I would have laughed.

I am not laughing anymore.

@unnameduser Similar happened to me 20-something years ago in The WELL. No foreign troll farms in there, but plenty of American christians and the like scoffing at my picture of their future.

Hail Freya, it's Friday! Time for a #FridayPaganPoll

The Pagan path is winding, and it's actually encouraged to explore all different flavors and traditions until you find one that's right for you.

How many did you try out before the one you’re on right now?

@Cat_LeFey My solitary path has taken me through mysticism and quakerism to practising as a hedge druid, a hedge witch, and a dedicant of the Morrigan.

1/2 A memory: one day in 1984 I was standing on a jetty in Devonport Dockyard, waiting while a warship tied up alongside, when a 1inch steel wire rope parted under strain. A forward spring, for those who know what I'm on about. Massive strain. It recoiled like a bullet and at the very final bit of its recoil hit me in my face.

DavidBridger,

2/2 Felt like a kick from a horse. Broke all my upper teeth. Ambulance job because the damage was very visible, which I could see in the expressions of everyone who looked at me although I was still numbed. Anyway, it turned out to be a big dental repair job over the next six months, but I was lucky because if I'd been a step closer it might have taken my head off.
Lucky David.
