CAMHS & Parent Blame: The impact on the Autistic family

The impact of CAMHS failures extends beyond autistic children to their families. Parent carer blame, deeply rooted in history, is perpetuated by neoliberal ideology and institutional practices, leading to distrust and vilification of parents. CAMHS exacerbates this blame, causing detrimental effects on parental mental health and hindering support for autistic individuals. This systemic issue must be addressed to…

CAMHS in the words of it’s own staff

I have talked extensively of the failures of CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) to support Autistic young people. There have been a great number of tragedies at the hands of a service that is not fit for purpose. I have explored my own experiences, parliamentary evidence, research, and the lived experiences of families involved with CAMHS. Sadly, I have also discussed inquests where young people have lost their…

Disabled; Warwickshire Council demonstrate a broader issue

The UK political landscape has been rocked by calls for the resignation of three Tory Councillors due to derogatory comments about disabled children. With 16 million disabled individuals in the UK, the issue of equal treatment is critical. Legal protection exists, but negative attitudes persist, reflecting the need for societal change. The social model of disability underlines the impact of attitudes towards…

Diagnosed & Dumped: The lack of post-diagnostic support for autism

When we consider the journey to getting an autism diagnosis, we can be forgiven for feeling a little overwhelmed. From start to finish the process can take many years, many disappointments, and enough paperwork to make it feel like you have fallen into a bureaucratic block hole. Some find the process so daunting that they don't even try. This probably accounts for some of the estimated…

What can CAMHS learn from the death of Max Sumner?

"Max Sumner, 17, took his own life on 13 May 2022 while he was under the care of Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (‘CAMHS’). The Coroner concluded today (23 January 2024) that the care he received by CAMHS contributed to his death." Farley Solicitors LLP, Press Release, 2024 The above quote comes from a press release from Farley's Solicitors.

Forcing Autistic students back into school will cost lives

Many Autistic students struggle with school attendance due to trauma from hostile staff attitudes and the school environment. The government's Moments Matter campaign aims to boost attendance, but neglects the trauma issue and lacks focus on students' well-being.

Forcing a person back to the source of their trauma with no meaningful support or accommodations is placing lives in danger. The new government push to get kids back into school is a danger to disabled communities.

The problem is isn't that the kids are not in school, it's that school is not a safe environment for all kids.

Autism and the challenge ahead

There are many things about being Autistic that we can celebrate. However, we have to be careful that in doing so we don't inadvertently engage in the erasure of our struggles. Campaigns like will only succeed if we commit to improving the things that cause our suffering. That requires some difficult conversations with ourselves...

You can't be neurodiversity affirming and also against self-diagnosis/identification

The two world views are mutually incompatible.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix@disabled.social avatar

The fact we have to argue that disability accommodations are good for everyone really highlights just how much people don't want to provide them.

: Social factors in Autistic wellbeing

As of today a new campaign begins. This campaign, names as is particularly pertinent to Autistic people. As a community, we have reached a point where psychological distress is treated as though it is a taken-for-granted part of our experience. While previous campaigns have tried to normalise opening up about our mental health, it seems that suffering has become a normalised, or even…

didn’t go far enough: So what will?

Since the mid to late 2010's, the hashtag has been circulating the Internet a lot. With it came the normalisation of talking about our mental health concerns and the entry of things like depression and anxiety into the everyday lexicon...

Autism is not a problem. Here's a list of things that are:

Inaccessible learning environments
Reduced life expectancy
Sky high sucde rate
Increased self-medication
Inaccessible and ableist healthcare systems
Unemployment and poverty
Discrimination
Increased rates of victimisation
High likelihood of mental health concerns
Gatekeeping of services
Higher rates of institutionalised parent carer blame

@actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy @neurodiversity

DivergentDumpsterPhoenix,
@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix@disabled.social avatar

This is not an exhaustive list. You are welcome to add your own contributions.

The point I am making is this; research priorities should be to improve the lives of Autistic people here now, and those to come. Research into why we exist and how to prevent it does no good for our community.
