Here is the download link for the first report coming from the CAMHS survey I did (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). It looked into Autistic peoples experiences of CAMHS.

It's a long report, but has some really important statistics in it

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @Elizabeth3 @neurodiversity @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy Frankly as an autist whose special interest includes writing/words I find that person-first language is clunky and ineffective in conveying the entirety of living neurodivergently. We don't say, it's an apple with a red skin. We say it's a red apple. It's a baseball, not a ball used in baseball games.

Person-first language actually decenters the individual's lived experience and implies passivity.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@Elizabeth3

One reason is because saying we "have" autism indicates it's an affliction or disease, like having a cold. And that indicates it's somehow "fixable" or temporary, which is a eugenic thought.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic @neurodiversity @autisticadvocacy Oof. I am 5' tall standing, which I am rarely. When ambulatory, I have been picked up by adult men on MANY occasions with no provocation or consent. I continue to get "cute" and "adorable" as my most common "compliments", and I am Forty-Six!Also I'm totally unable to mask and my affect follows my smallest emotion. To see myself as a respectable, mature and reasonably serious adult seems an impossible task.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix I used to think that I was sabotaging my own goals in life by going full speed until I could no longer and then crashing and withdrawing from pretty much everything for significant periods of time. I still experience such cycles to this day, in fact. But I am slowly learning to reframe these experiences as autistic burnout, because what I go through is exactly that and has nothing to do with sabotage or betraying myself.

The reason why explaining my neurodivergent experience will always be flawed

I have spoken widely about neurodivergent experiences. I have talked about my unique experience of addiction as an Autistic person, my psychosis as an AuDHD Schizophrenic. I have lamented over how society's power structures have oppressed myself and people like me.

It's a tough truth to face up to, but not every Autstic/neurodivergent person is a good person. Many of us find out the hard way that there are members of our own community who will do harm to us collectively and individually.

It's important that we acknowledge the truth that we can always do better as a community. We don't have to be perfect. We just have to do a little better each day.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix Sadly true. It pains me to say it, but some of the people who caused me the most hurt were other neurodivergents - ones who'd learned very well how to lie, hurt people, and then play the victim afterward.

When you say "go to the doctor" to an Autistic person, you won't necessarily realise what a difficult position they are placed in.

So often we are told that if our problems were "that bad" we would see a doctor.

The truth is that healthcare is inaccessible to many Autistic people for a vast array of reasons. From ableism through to doctors who think studies on the general population should inform the treatment of minority bodies.

This is one of the biggest things I want people to understand about being autistic in an NT world. NT people who've had good experiences with their doctors can assume we'll meet the same reasonability (medical racism and misogyny are also overlooked). Sometimes if someone accompanies us they'll see things that persuade them, but other times a witness's presence deters discrimination, which is practical but masks the issue...

ScruffyDux,
@ScruffyDux@fosstodon.org avatar

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy @audhd This exactly. If doctors were paralleled to phone repairers, the majority of them would only know how to fix iPhones, and a few would know how to fix Androids.

Meanwhile I'm over here, a Pinephone running PostmarketOS - most "repairers" have never heard of my software OR hardware, let alone know how to fix me. And usually break me worse when they try.

One of the nuances that "responsible drinking" campaigns often miss is the reason why Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent people drink.

Autistic people don't necessarily drink with the goal of inebriation. Often, we drink to cope with the social environment. It acts as a social lubricant that makes it easier to talk and cope with the sensory bombardment that often happens in spaces where drinking is happening.

Everyone masks in one way or another. It isn't solely an Autistic or neurodivergent thing. However, Autistic and neurodivergent people do mask a lot more.

The thing is, masking doesn't necessarily mean we are behaving more neurotypically. Sometimes we mask by leaning into our Autistic behaviours.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic That’s a very good point – I do have a tendency to think of masking in a very one-dimensional way, but it’s more complex than that

Psychiatry in the west has been built upon a long history of colonial aggression. If you are part of a minority group, chances are you will end up in a psychiatrists office at some point in your life.

Psychiatry then positions the problem in your brain, rather than the political and material circumstances of your life.

Psychiatry needs to do better.

@tirok @DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy no, because then psychiatry would have to be founded on mistakenly bad research for over a century (very unlikely), instead of being founded in white supremacist ableism. this is the same pseudo-science that brought the world harmful nonsense like phrenology, IQ tests, lobotomy, forced castration, and medical experimentation on racialised humans. it has been a way of imprisoning enslaved Black people who were captured after attempted escape, and a tool of genocide. psychiatry has been used to oppress gay people and women, and is still used to oppress trans people and cis women in different ways that still amount to gaslighting, denial of dignity of self (ie denial of trans identity without doctor approval), and sometimes mutilation (ie surgery without consent).

the last reported forced sterilisation of an Indigenous woman in a canadian hospital happened in 2019.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @crashglasshouses @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy The field of psychology is the same. While it does make sense to focus on what we can do as individuals to improve our mental health, rather than things beyond our control, it also lets society off the hook for all of the ways in which it preserves the privileges of some minorities, whilst marginalising others.

Autistic people often don't have great experiences with doctors. I suspect that in part it's because of doctors failing to humanise their patients.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy Since becoming seriously chronically ill 4 years ago, my inability to work well with doctors has become a BIG issue. I had no idea that I had trouble communicating effectively with them prior to this. I suspect it’s a combination of having a post-viral illness and having autism, but since I now need regular medical care, it sure is inconvenient to have this become such a large problem.

What is the double empathy problem and how does it relate to autism?

Within the Autistic community, there is theory that we speak about as though it is commonplace in human lives. In part, this is the double empathy problem in practice. However, not all theory that we speak of is known by wider society. Thus, it is my intention to demystify a small part of that theoretical knowledge in this article. What is the double empathy problem?

joshsusser,

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix This is a great write-up. I really like the way you put this:

> Autistic people, however, see autism differently. Autistic people view autism as an abstract concept with the only tangible aspect of it being the existence of Autistic people. That is to say, autism does not exist, only Autistic people exist.
