Some work for the OpenStreetMap community in 2024… 😀🚰

So, how would you tag this ?

Is it me, or is !openstreetmap getting more and more lively? In the past few days, there was at least one post per day, which is comparable to the osm-subreddit...

Doudouosm,
@Doudouosm@en.osm.town avatar

@pietervdvn Indeed, the community on Lemmy is much more active than months ago. Quite handily, it can be interacted with from Mastodon, so I read and cross-post (when I don’t forget…) from my mastodon app.

If you think you've seen complicated and disputed borders between countries, I raise you the Baarle-Nassau - Baarle-Hertog community in the Netherlands 😮

@kzimmermann @mapmeld wrote an diary entry about his visit to Baarle-Nassau: https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/mapmeld. And if you’re interested, @opencage also had a thread on this (and other enclaves / exclaves): https://fosstodon.org/@kzimmermann/111070024650740786.

Unsurprisingly, 3 are using OpenStreetMap data.

This also means you can correct and add paths yourself if you ever notice some are wrong or missing.

But which one of the four games called 'City Guessr' am I talking about?

Why not play all four and decide for yourself?

Belgium’s Mapper of the Month is @joost_schouppe.

If the name sounds familiar to you, it might be for many reasons. It could be for his past involvement as OpenStreetMap Foundation board member, for leading the Belgian community chapter, or being a very active mapper.

Read the interview at https://openstreetmap.be/en/motm/2023/08/01/joost-schouppe.html.

    @bbbhltz There are examples of opening hours based on calendar days on this page (e.g. “Jan 23-Feb 11,Feb 12 00:00-24:00; PH off”): https://openingh.openstreetmap.de/evaluation_tool/.

    But if they change every year, I would skip that detail.

    Interesting paper from about “Mapping with ” concludes it delivers unique advantages, such as:

    • lowering the barrier to producing maps
    • boosting the efficiency of massive map production
    • and understanding geographical space with its spatial thinking capability.

    Limitations cited are:

    • its unequal benefits for different users (need to have some expertise already)
    • and necessary user intervention for quality control.

    @CjkOvPDwQW In short, it’s not correct, because the node is not associated to the way that is controlled. See “How to map on the wiki”: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway=speed%20camera?uselang=en. The simple method is a node part of the way (to represent the existence of a control at that place). The more advanced is an isolated node (for the physical location of the camera) but make it part of a three-node relation to represent the direction of the control and link it to the way.

    I have noticed that my Windows machines are trying to update Edge over HTTP to the link below. I have would have thought it should be using HTTPS

    http://msedge.b.tlu.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com/filestreamingservice/files/

    I found this Microsoft article which says HTTP is a legitimate source, but I can't find why it would use HTTP in the first place. Any thoughts?

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-security-endpoints

    Doudouosm,
    @Doudouosm@en.osm.town avatar

    @bazcurtis If the content downloaded over HTTP is digitally signed, it doesn’t help from an integrity perspective to use HTTPs. Confidentiality of what you download would be preserved, if HTTPs was used, which is desirable of course. A threat scenario could be that an attacker observing what you download could deduce what you don’t download and thus determine to what known attacks you would be exposed.
