On my last two albums, I've slid down the path past minimalism and post-minimalism to slow, quiet piano music with changes. I'm still exploring the same compositional concepts, but with harmonic motion.

If you haven't heard the latest yet, you're welcome to check albums out: hollywood staircase and blue in blue in blue.

@microtones Just bought blue in blue in blue and enjoying hearing it right now on this fine morning. Cheers, David.

@xankarn @historyofpunkrock I just LOVE this photo. I lived a few miles from there when I was a kid, in Shoreham-by-Sea.

‘Breakfast bingritto’

Fry a green onion pancake or paratha on both sides. Set it aside. On the same hot pan or tava, add a beaten egg. Take off the stove after 30s, use a spatula to move / fold the egg around. Layer it on the pancake / paratha / bing. Add protein of choice (I have a homemade cured salmon here), though any ham / sausage / vegan alternative would do nicely too. Add furikake, and black / white / cayenne / any pepper. Finish with a touch of soy sauce

@skinnylatte Have you shared your recipe for homemade cured salmon? I'd love to know more about that!

@skinnylatte Thanks, I will have to try this!

Trying out some clients. I dont think they are as good as the iOS ones, in general. Of course, this could just be my Apple-way bias, but switching between timelines and lists is way clunkier, for example.

Megalodon is the one I like best so far. If you're on Android, what's your favourite app?

EarlOfEdgecombe,
@EarlOfEdgecombe@mstdn.social avatar

@john I tried a bunch of the Android apps at the end of last year and settled on Tusky. I detest the icon, which necessarily has a prominent place on my homescreen. When I began with Tusky the icon was an abstract set of tusks, but then they "updated" it to a cutesy-pie smiling elephant. I use it daily nonetheless.

EarlOfEdgecombe,
@EarlOfEdgecombe@mstdn.social avatar

@john no I don't use lists

Sadly, I'm not even shocked at this point since we seem to have the most boring people running the world.

EarlOfEdgecombe,
@EarlOfEdgecombe@mstdn.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi There were 60 episodes of The Wire over five seasons, and in all that time it was nominated for only two Emmys (for writing), of which it won zero.

All of these awards are all about consolidating power and upholding the status quo. They are not about recognizing and uplifting excellence.

I'm 59. When I was born, segregation existed, interracial marriage was illegal and women were not allowed to have credit cards in their own names until I was 11 years old. CIVIL RIGHTS ARE A NEW THING.

@ArmyGirl @Marenzers @Jennifer_Pinkley @StillIRise1963 New York City public schools are more segregated now than they were in the 1960s. I live in NYC and have raised two daughters in the public school system here. There are many factors involved, but a major one is simply that privileged white parents are very often racist and see non-white children as a sign of a poor school.

Here's one of many articles about it, in case people from elsewhere find it hard to believe:

@LarsFosdal it’s a Tasty Chips GR-1 granular synthesizer. Very interesting instrument which I am exploring.

    The skies over NYC are dull yellow, the air is yellow and it smells like a campfire.

    It's cold, an unnatural chill in the air. I think this is due to a wildfire in Canada... but it feels so...

    ...so climate change
    It's creepy.

    Were this to persist, the garden on our roof would die.

    If the mastodon ~community wants to be more welcoming to more people, someone is going to have to do bystander training for dealing with people like this dude. (And the other guys who told her to just block.) He responded to a Black woman’s post about it feeling super white here and went on for like seven posts telling her how to speak and how he was helping her be better.

    By not making this guy’s replies visible to most people bc of federation weirdness, the software plays a role, too.

    @adamgreenfield @kissane @paulkruczynski @trochee Seems to me like the moderation systems here are designed to combat overt hostility, but completely inadequate for tackling ingrained prejudice from oblivious well-meaning racist/misogynist/homophobic fools. And the latter far, far outweigh the former. But to have a functioning system, both problems need to be tackled.

    @mcmullin @composers @contemporarymusic It’s so useful to have a description of your work ready to go when asked. In my band N to The Power we argued about this for a year, and I finally settled on

    “We’re a ten-piece experimental band from Harlem that sound like a cross between Fela Kuti and Steve Reich. I play mostly electric cello and Tony plays bass clarinet, but we are all multi-instrumentalists.”

    It’s so reductive, but effective!

    @mcmullin @composers @contemporarymusic I think there is nothing lost if you get the description “wrong” but always some human engagement to be gained by having literally any description at all
