Poultry litter consists of manure, feathers, spilled feed and bedding material that accumulate on the floors of the buildings that house chickens and turkeys. It can contain disease-causing bacteria, viruses (including H5N1), antibiotics, toxic heavy metals, pesticides and even foreign objects such as dead rodents, birds, rocks, nails and glass.
@EverMama8_ I once read, a blog post I think, by an American which said that his kids would never eat American meat. His reason was that they were fed on poultry litter, which contains some kind of cyanide.
I found that hard to believe, but now you mention the litter problem, I'm not so sure anymore.

This is why Britain had that BSE crisis. US feed companies were putting sheep brains and spines into cows feed. The sheep had a disease called (I think) Scrapy.
