FaceDeer,

Indeed. I was expecting a two-week "calm before the storm" at this point, as the protest blackout ended but the API was not yet removed. But the protest continued and Reddit keeps stirring the pot. Interesting times.

I know that in the end Reddit will be able to brute-force themselves a "win", but if the Fediverse gets a nice solid critical mass of users as a result then I think Reddit's destined for a long decline.

FaceDeer,

I wish the AFU had the courage to not waste the lives of their soldiers and come to the negotiating table so that no more lives are senselessly wasted

What's to negotiate? Russia has seized Ukrainian territory. Ukraine wants it back. There's nothing for Ukraine to concede.

The only side "wasting" lives here is Russia, if they'd just go home the war would be over. Ukraine's not going to try seizing any Russian territory.

FaceDeer,

Anyone that "knows" they will completely overpower Ukraine apparently stopped paying attention to reality many years ago. They've been proven to be incapable of it.

Meta (owner of Facebook, Instagram & WhatsApp) is joining the fediverse very soon and we have to seriously prepare. This isn't a theoretical scenario anymore.

FaceDeer,

Interesting. I'm actually not reacting as negatively as most of the other folks here seem to be, I feel like it's a "the more the merrier" situation. Much like how I'm not mad that Gmail is using the email protocol, for example, it's good that it can interact with all other email programs and servers out there.

FaceDeer,

Even if Twitter and Reddit don't completely crash like Digg did, making them "just one among several" will be a good thing in the long run. They'll actually have competition for a change.

FaceDeer,

If the technology was to become widespread it would have to do better than "silly digital ski goggles" anyway. I wear glasses, I wouldn't mind slightly bulkier glasses if in exchange I can get a heads-up display telling me what the name of that person who's greeting me that I should totally know the name of but have forgotten right now.

FaceDeer,

Indeed. As much as the changes that have been made and will be made to Reddit over the years are appalling, it's not the fault of the workers in the trenches. They get their directions from on high.

FaceDeer,

And even if it were true, there are other instances. The only reason I'm on lemmy.ml myself is because the one that was recommended to me first was offline when I tried it, I could move somewhere else if this turns out to be true.

Finding an instance that blocks least and is least blocked

Is there a way to shop around for a Lemmy instance based on how many instances are blocking it and how many instances it's blocking? For example, I noticed that the lemmygrad.ml instance is relatively popular, but it seems like a lot of other instances block it. It also blocks a bunch of other instances. So, if there are any...

FaceDeer,

Be mindlessly propagandistic "communist." The countries they fawn over aren't even particularly communist, they're just authoritarian. Russia in particular is run by capitalist oligarchs.

It's just tiresome and pointless engaging with them.

FaceDeer,

I'm not basing my statement off of any experience with Marxism-leninism. I'm basing it off of my experience with lemmygrad posters here on Lemmy. For example, this thread about the Tienanmen Square anniversary. I don't particularly care about the specific political ideologies on display.

FaceDeer,

I'm not speaking about you specifically, I have no idea who you are. I'm talking about lemmygrad in general. Just like the person you were responding to was talking about. He asked "what did lemmygrad.ml do?" And I'm clarifying that.

It's not that lemmygrad.ml is simply "communist."

FaceDeer,

A bunch of whataboutism that has no relevance to the subject at hand.

FaceDeer,

It's not going to be a dam they control for very much longer.

FaceDeer,

You really think Ukraine needs more justification for retaliation against Russia at this point?

FaceDeer,

And also based on it making total sense for Russia to have done it, and no sense at all for anyone else to have done it.

FaceDeer,

And I could easily flip the question around to OP. Why would Ukraine blow up their own dam, flooding their own territory and potentially crippling their own nuclear power plant? And making a counteroffensive across the Dnipro river that much harder?

It's not to deprive Crimea of water ahead of the counteroffensive, Crimea's reservoirs are full right now so they've got a year's worth in the tank. That's about the only possible benefit I can think of that Ukraine might have got out of this, and even if it were so it would be a trivial benefit compared to the costs. Crimea's water supply isn't going to make a difference to the actual fight that's about to happen there.

FaceDeer,

On the one hand, this is going to cause terrible long-term damage and cost a fortune to repair.

On the other hand, the Russians wouldn't have done this if they thought they were going to be able to hold the occupied territories long-term. So it's kind of a good sign, I guess.

FaceDeer,

One of the big instances, Lemmygrad, is basically dedicated to that crowd. If the influx of Reddit refugees doesn't counterbalance them then at some point I'll probably move to an instance that doesn't federate with them.

FaceDeer,

Indeed, the "they're all a bunch of tankies over there" narrative is one of the more common objections I see to Lemmy when I mention it as a valid Reddit alternative over on Reddit. Bit of a chicken-and-egg problem, mind you - we need non-tankies to balance things out. Here's hoping that there's enough new blood coming in anyway to manage that.

FaceDeer,

Seems like this should be a high priority feature. I did try joining a different instance but at the time only lemmy.ml was functioning and accepting applications. Now that I have subscribed to a bunch of communities starting afresh would be a bit of a hassle.

FaceDeer,

Well that's not a good sign. I hope the potential flood of users brings a flood of devs along with it.

FaceDeer,

Depends on the details of the splintering, for me. The Fediverse seems like a good way to splinter - everything's free and open, but there are shared protocols that allow for interoperability and discoverability.

anders, to lemmy

Lemmy is booming

I have never before received so many reactions and comments on my Lemmy posts before, so it's obvious to see, that there are many new members here.
Welcome to all the new! And I'm looking forward to see more of you here.
Cheers!

FaceDeer,

One of the benefits of the federated model is that instances can fragment into smaller islands if things get too awful being part of the main continent. Though that's also a downside, IMO.

FaceDeer,

Indeed, Reddit can do the "fragmentation" thing as well. But the big difference is that you can never escape the admins, all subreddits are ultimately under the same top bosses. And you can't "defederate" with, say, /r/conservative to effectively cause everyone over there to cease to exist as far as your own subreddit is concerned.

Whether this is better or worse is going to be interesting to see play out.
