    @volpeon I saw drama on Bluesky this morning about someone using AI art, and yeah.

    I feel like I'm in this middle ground in the AI debate myself - I've seen the rise of this AI bubble since GPT-2 / Talk to Transformer / the first version of AI Dungeon so I know the gist of how it works, and I also have artist friends who were pretty concerned about AI replacing them. They're not concerned about it now and some have even took to AI for inspiration and reference, to help them improve their own art skills.

    It's really not as black and white as the professional online mass debaters want you to think.

    @mackuba How has Bluesky discussion been for you here? It's been pretty toxic for me. Honestly reminds me of the petty Linux rivalries (e.g. systemd vs. traditional init, X11 vs. Wayland)

    @mackuba Ah, I think we got mixed up, I meant discussion of Bluesky on the fediverse. :P I use Bluesky myself, prob more than fedi now, and things are honestly really nice there. I think Bluesky could do with some of the fediverse's creature comforts (things like keyword muting and Markdown text formatting) but other than that it has been pretty chill.

    I still think modern social media shifting the focus from topics to people wasn't a great move. The way forums worked was that you opted into the things you're interested in and got a very low chance of seeing topics you disliked. And even if you did, not opening the thread was a surefire way to get rid of it from your view.

    Now you subscribe to people who will post about anything. You carefully have to consider if the things-I-like to things-I-dislike ratio works for you, but unless you're extremely strict you will get topics in your timeline you may hate. Getting rid of unwanted content takes substantial amount of discipline in who you follow and usage of mutes and word filters. The latter of which is, quite frankly, a joke. And I think this is the root for a lot of "discourses" nowadays.

    @volpeon This is probably my one criticism of Bluesky’s feed feature actually. I’m subscribed to a feed for Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss content and most of it is fan art which is what I subscribed to the feed for, but because it’s finding basically ANYONE talking about the show, you will have someone moaning about the show’s popularity, its creator, and sprinkling their salt by jokingly saying how they’re going to kill themselves because they saw an ad for it on Prime Video (actual post I saw). It’s worse than Tumblr, where the person is deliberately tagging it to show their disdain to the community. Here, there’s no magic AI filter for β€œpeople who shit-talk this cartoon for stupid reasons”.

    It’s rare enough that I’d mute the person saying it but I think it plays nicely into what you were saying. Maybe if the feed creator had fine-tuned the feed to have just art, that’d solve things a bit, but I dunno.

    @Flaky@furry.engineer avatar

    @volpeon Should note that fedi will have this issue too, though the ability to follow hashtags on Mastodon might help a bit since it’s more like Tumblr in that regard.

    @volpeon pahahahaha this is how I feel about Bluesky sometimes (though Tokimeki is a third party client that supports keyword muting)

    Flaky,

    @volpeon I had something come up on my Google feed yesterday, turns out Mozilla had an AI-assisted website designer or something?

    But yeah, Mozilla really doesn't know what it *wants *to be and it's frustrating when people evangelise them as this independent organisation when they're just another corp.

    Flaky,
    @Flaky@furry.engineer avatar

    @volpeon Lol unsurprising. This is part of why even though I use Firefox, I prefer Vivaldi as a company by miles. I don't care if they've made yet another Chromium-based browser, they know what they are and what they want to be and that's going to keep them afloat in their niche while Mozilla's going through its identity crisis.

    I'm not even against Mozilla providing extra services, or even paid ones like their VPN (gotta get money somehow!), but this just feels like a cry for help to investors, or shareholders pushing them to ride the Next Big Web3 Wave.

    proprietary software shoves ads in your face, implements dark patterns everywhere and does everything to keep your attention
    "Well, but it's free to use and everyone uses it. It's not that bad."

    open source software shows a sidebar on the right instead of left side
    "Literally unusable garbage."

    Flaky,
    @Flaky@furry.engineer avatar

    @volpeon is this based on something that happened? Wondering because I see a lot of complaints about Discord and co. implementing such dark patterns, and OSS not fitting a user's specific needs more. (in fact, some idiot on Lemmy tried to gaslight someone who wants to use Vivaldi over Firefox into saying they didn't need all its features)

    Flaky,
    @Flaky@furry.engineer avatar

    @volpeon For me, I see a pattern of proprietary software luring people in with good UX then enshittifying later, while OSS is like "what the hell is UX?"

    Thankfully on the latter, things are improving while the former is stalling. KDE has put a focus on UX lately and a lot of their apps have improved as a result.
