Classic Mario World 3

Bowser tries one last time by kidnapping Rosalina.

More of that classic flavor for Super Mario World. This time around the game would like it if you became a Dragon Coin hoarder. Get enough to unlock some extra goodies.

The usual themes are here but look over there in the distance, a pink continent! It's theme is that it's just pink. Also at the end you go into space and the final Bowser fight is quite theatric.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Blue hedgehog teams up with a kitsune

There goes that Eggman again. But now with the power of spin dashing and Player 2's invincibility frames you can do anything! Zip through a number of zones and demolish robotic tyranny.

Loop de loop like a crazy person, drown in acid, take time off gambling for no discernable reason. And go the acid trip third dimension to get all (7!) Chaos Emeralds.

Plutonia

Oh yeah. THAT one.

The other half of Final Doom

I'm breaching the boundaries of difficulty because I only beat this mod relatively recently. It's less cryptic and a lot more combat-heavy. May have pioneered the trend in slaughtermaps where the design choice is just cram way too many enemies into a single level.

After many trials, and many deaths. I'm glad to have passed this rite of passage under my own terms.

Mega Man 2

What's up with that Dr. Wily anyway?

He didn't need to steal robots, he can just manufacture his own, which is funny because Mega Man doesn't mind a little plagiarism for justice!

Eventually you'll get these "items" for platforming purposes. Become storage of energy tanks to give yourself a full heal at any time.

You can get this funky password system because it's too soon to save files on any device based on computers clearly.

Mega Man

The Super Fighting Robot

Two scientists just working together. One goes crazy because he's envious of the other and he reprograms them under his control.

Luckily Rockman is a robot that exists. And he can copy powers from the robot masters. All with their weaknesses Rock(man), paper, scissors style.

The first game is arguably the toughest but if you pull through it is quite the series.

Donkey Kong (Game Boy)

The arcade hit turned into a puzzling platforming adventure

Donkey Kong kidnaps Pauline one last time and Mario traverses a number of locations to get there. Find the key and open the door but is it always that simple?

This game introduced Mario's acrobatic abilities that were known more for being in Mario 64. This game also makes the best use out of the Super Game Boy's functionality.

i'm astounded by how far on has come since the last time i seriously used linux, which was probably ... 2010?

not only are older games and several newer games now natively packaged for linux, play + works for so much that dual-booting is so far from my mind.

i could see still being necessary for brand-new 'triple-a' stuff, unfortunately; but let's hope that's not the case for much longer.

Classic Mario World 2

Bowser and company are going to secure the magical crystals from the previous game.

More of "bandicoot"'s familiar level design.

In the definitive version of these Classics the level design is more polished up to dissuade glitches. If you fall into a bottomless pit you come back up and go down a hitpoint rather than just dying.

There's also the local Bonus House per world you can peruse to restock your powerups.

Duke it Out in D.C.

Oh no! Those alien bastards (from space) invaded Washington DC!

Duke Nukem 3D with a U.S. Government theme like you might imagine in any action film taking place there.

Made by Sunstorm Interactive who also came up with deer hunting games. (Yes really)

So yeah um, the levels are okay. I especially enjoy the Smithsonian level since I like wandering around in a museum.

Yoshi's Island

Super Mario while he was still a baby.

Swallow enemies to create eggs, then throw those eggs at things for various level design reasons.

Mario's twin brother is kidnapped and Mario himself was dropped off all while the stork was delvering to their parents (identity still unknown)

The game is less about your health and more about the likelihood of Mario's capture.

Deal with Kamek's sizeshifting bosses along the way.

Sonic the Hedgehog

The premiere Genesis (or Megadrive) blast processing experience.

Blue Hedgehog confirmed for being a very fast animal. One that can save the woodland creatures from Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman)

Go up loop de loops, hold on to at least one ring to maintain your health. Find those mysterious Chaos Emeralds if you can (or can't)

I don't believe I need to say much more. Sonic is always somewhere on my mind (or brain)

Hell to Pay

The other half of Not Final Doom

A Partial conversion where the graphics for some weapons, enemies, and the levels have changed. It even comes with an interesting CGI video thing.

The story goes that an invasion force from the Hell Planet establishes a base on Io. Is there something mythical about this moon I don't know about?

If you liked Final Doom and Perdition's Gate I would recommend this.

Super Metroid

The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace. OR IS IT?

Currently my personal favorite for the SNES. You explore, you run around, you collect powerups and the communities, the replayability is so immense.

The only sad part is I caught onto this style of game only after I came of age, but now I love it.

Dark foreboding, isolating atmosphere. More buzzwords. No need to convince you. Great game.

I'm watching a video about difficulty balancing in Mario games, and it got me in the mood to talk about something.

I straight-up don't like difficulty settings. They tweak numbers, they can take the edge off the game, sure... but, they convey nothing about what the experience will actually be. Even if you can change difficulty mode mid-playthrough, it's fiddly, and hard to predict the outcome of any change you make. (cont)

GamingWolf,
@GamingWolf@mstdn.games avatar

@cadeybunny I mean I like old boomer shooter difficulties since they at least change the level design without relying on just changing variables.

(I recall instances where keys are moved and obstacles being added or platforms being removed)
