Hexen

Greetings mortal. Are you ready to die?

Dark Fantasy switch hunting goodness. This may be the Doom engine but the gameflow is a bit Metroidvania-ish.

The Fighter is all muscle and no magic.
The Wizard is all magic and no muscle.
The Cleric is balanced for the lord.

Wander around areas solving little mysteries while the game occasionally respawns enemies.

I resorted to mostly wiki-reading for this game. No regrets.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Mario and up to 3 of his friends can join him on a formulaic quest through the Mushroom Kingdom. Not particularly innovative but always well executed. Collect 3 Star coins to get the most out of your adventure and see what secrets you can uncover.

Fire up the Wii. Do some waggling that would be better served as a separate button. Find it within yourself to simmer down and go for some Mario comfort food.

Perdition's Gate

Hell is just a planet in space

In this Doom 2 add-on the road to perdition is just a galaxy away. Between each level is a quick little text blurb for storytelling purposes. There's new levels and new textures.

The level design is quite strong at first but peters out towards the end. It's kind of a long lost sibling to Final Doom since they share designers. Get your hands on it anyway you can.

Super Mario Bros. 3Mix

Celebrate Mario's history.

Experience Mario 3 with the lenses of Mario 1 all the way to Mario Galaxy. Collect Star Coins, play as Toad, and discover a showcase of romhacking. Oh and you can ride Yoshi.

Some gameplay notes taken from New Super Mario Bros. Wii like with the Star Coins and arena battles.

Somewhat harder but an easy enough Mario experience, unless you trying to be a completionist like yours truly.

Blood

A Build Engine game, horror movie style.

Despite Caleb and his evil compadres' loyalty to Tchernobog, they have been betrayed. Luckily he lives again. The only thing heroic about this protagonist is that he opposes the villain.

Get caught up in a macabre and incredibly gory game with tons of references abound.

I would recommend One Unit Whole Blood for the whole SIX episodes.

Word Rescue

An ancient English edutainment platforming adventure

Restore words to books by matching them with pictures. But watch out for the Gruzzles! They hate learning how to read and they don't want anyone else to either. Heck if you even make reading comprehension errors more of them will spawn.

Explore towns, castles, caves, spooky houses and more! You can also spell each level's special word for bonus points.

Jazz Jackrabbit

A green rabbit that moves like a hedgehog but he's got a gun.

You run around like crazy shooting enemies allied with your archnemesis, a tortoise. That's right. 90's radical aesop sci-fi, woah.

The music is incredible to say the least. Almost every stage is unique.

Collect lots of ammo for your guns. Find some secret levels and wander into special stages. I recommend the CD-Rom version for it's 9 episodes!

The Lost Episodes of Doom

An odd case of a commerical add-on release. To get around legal licensing issues, there was a book created as a companion to this mod that was sold with the add-on included for free.

This mod is quite easy. Easier than the original game. There is clashing level design since the two authors have distinct styles and there are no secret levels to speak of.

Kid genius stumbles into outer space adventures.

While most children are partying at a friend's house after curfew, this guy just takes a trip to Mars because he can.

Then he finds that aliens not of Mars itself messed with his spaceship and you gotta find the parts!

Created after a failed offer by Id to port Super Mario Bros 3 to the PC.

Play Episode 1. It is shareware after all.

Scourge of Armagon

Quake's first expansion

One of the antagonist's generals is taking over the slipgates? Or something.

Nah you're here for new environments and new weapons. Like a pulse rifle enemies have used or better yet just straight up Thor's Hammer.

A suit to swim faster, shields that return damage to attackers and a summoning item! There's other new enemies, and some other interesting obstacles.

TNT: Evilution

The first half of Final Doom

TeamTNT's commercial mod which was quite controversial at the time for being sold in comparison to mods/fangames not really being sold. If only the naysayers knew about the rise of indie gaming.

It is a long wistful, thoughtful romp somewhere on the moon of Jupiter, Io.

Make sure you have a patched version so that you have a yellow key available in the secret level.

SMK Limited 1

This is an unknown Japanese developer's first romhack of Super Mario Kart. This is also the same person that made the F-Zero Stage series romhacks.

A straightforward series of race tracks. A few notable ones include a bunch of jumping pads at the beach and this one square of gridlock madness. Oh and TWO rainbow roads.

So if you need a set of Super Mario Karts like you need a daily Sudoku maybe this can scratch that itch.

Classic Mario World

Bowser took some magic crystals and he got high on life.

Travel this idyllic journey by Brazilian hacker "bandicoot" (Gee, I wonder what franchise he likes?)

Notable similiarities to Donkey Kong Country in this game's design. (According to me)

Levels can go on for longer then you might expect. Switch Palaces are levels unto themselves, and drop by Toad's Bonus House every so often would you?

Super Mario 64

It's Mario in 3D!

A much more acrobatic plumber collects a bunch of stars by jumping to paintings inside the princess's castle.

Battle foes which are larger enemies with a crown on them. Solve puzzles and mysteries. The foundation of many a collect-a-thon.

You bet your ass I'm enamored with the many mods for this game.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to backwards long jump into some parallel universes.

Quake

The milestone of a lifetime

You find yourself in a mishmash of sci-fi, fantasy, and eldtrich horror. And everything is 3D.

It's difficult to describe the aesthetic. The uninterpolated enemy movements. Trent Reznor lending his talents. Realistic yet unearthly. Surreal yet structured.

Highly recommended. You can bet I will deep delve into Quake 1 mods. They are... an experience.

Donkey Kong Country 3

The underrated(?) end of a trilogy.

Now both the first playable Kongs are kidnapped but it's okay, we have Dixie Kong and some other guy.

Quite more steamlined then the previous games plus an interesting traversable overworld and a overarching inventory. And we've got other animal buddies

If you haven't played it and already played the first 2, go play this one. Go for 103% (actually 105%!!!) if you can.
