Please take note this instance is shutting down due to lack of funds please move your account

rooftopaxx,

@Hamishcampbell might be timely to put another reminder up into that little Announcements thingy at the top too?

Hamishcampbell,

Please move your account off this instance

" unless we can get sustainable funding for this instance it will shut down on the Renewal: 2023-11-12 which is the date of the next payment.

We have been talking about this for the last few months."

At another event "How can we build the sustainable economy?' with Dieter Helm & Dimitri Zenghelis" let's see if this steps out of the pointless path of the last 3 events

Hamishcampbell, (edited )

Very good presentation, let's see if Q&A works.

Update: the middle guy likes to talk, about himself.

Hamishcampbell,

My question led to a very reactionary answer on social actavisam, a complete dismissal of politics and a clear democratic rejection of billionaires.

The is no agency for the needed change challenge he argues for, a bureaucratic plan with no path to implement it. Very

michaelgraaf,

@Hamishcampbell 😩 11 Dec, right? or are you using US date system?

Hamishcampbell,

@michaelgraaf no idea copied it from the renewal page, our instances is hosted in France but think the billing is in the USA... globalization :)

it's soon, is all i can say. a few weeks.

You guys need to talk to each other @michaelgraaf @rooftopaxx @nedhamson as this space is culture

Hamishcampbell,

@rooftopaxx @michaelgraaf @nedhamson @EarthWolf

Yep this is a shame as the fluffy spiky debate is key to real rather social change and challenge, it's basic stuff.

If we can all build a community to sustain the instances then we can reboot activism as a different codebase than mastodon, the are a lot so the ida is still good, can we build a community of use rather than individuals "shouting into the void" as we unkindly like to say at the

rooftopaxx,

@Hamishcampbell @nedhamson @michaelgraaf Nah, the silence is deafening, counting the anti-migration people there's only half a dozen active accounts on this instance, let it die.

A reminder this instance will have to shut down due to lack of funding soon #modteam

One problem is I have not reinbust the activism instance before we shut it down so cant get the invoices for this so looks like am personally paying for the last 3-6 month of use for that instances, bit crap but there you are. Mess.

nedhamson,

@Hamishcampbell @michaelgraaf @rooftopaxx So, it seems that I am the only one who is willing to put up some money to keep this instance going. I cannot do it by myself. So Will need to find out how I can find a new instnce and transfer my data to it. Hope there is a way to do it without losing all I follow and those who follow me. Can any one help me with that. Would prefer to keep this one going but cannot afford to do it on my own.

We made it to the opening of "radical landscapes" with Thalia Campbell to sit next to her banner.

rooftopaxx,

@Hamishcampbell Presumably that's not the "radical landscapes" that was at the Tate last year and is the one that just opened at the William Morris Gallery?

msaunders,

@rooftopaxx @Hamishcampbell
If the community has not already forged and formed itself such that they will self-support, then it's time to let go.

While I don't see masto as particularly harmful, it and the fediverse as it currently stands is not proving to be one of the ways to solve actual problems.

Social media is useless to most people, in much the same way as news media.

We need social discussion, or social cooperation, social news facts ? and social tools to

Rule making is always the death path of any working Alt/grassroots structure https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/ this comes soon after the dictatorship of the invisible hierarchy, its mess making.

This is a scripted fail that is recurring for 20 years of the in tech and "governance" we do need to do better

The activism instance has shut down due to payment cancelled from lack of funds. We received no direct donations for this instance for the last year on or and funds were far beyond exorsted.

We would like to restart the instance based on a different codebase if donations could cover the ongoing costs of servers and hosting

Our culture is currently not strong anufe to support alt media hosting or production.

@Hamishcampbell I know this'll sound a little strange, but have you considered Oracle's free tier? That get's you a 4-core arm system, with 24GB of RAM, and 200GB of storage space, with 10TB of monthly traffic. Sydney location instances are okay, and as long as you register as a "paid" customer, they don't claim the resources back; even if you are paying nothing. Extra storage space costs = low. Disclaimer: My instance runs on this.

At Blackwell's book shop author event with of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effective_altruism movement, no hard questions so far.

Hamishcampbell,

He sidelined the two "hard" questions due to the talk format. Not much content

We are shutting down our mastodon activists instance next month. We are going to look at the sustainability of the campaign instance, but think it's half paying it hosting costs, activism covered no costs over a year. Will do funding outreach for this campaign instance over the next few months, we plan to keep it online, but it would be nice if it covered its hosting costs and help cover the costs of the wider

We have shut down 3 servers over the last year only works if...

This is my periodic reminder to support your instance - nearly all instances are free and rely on donations to pay the bills. We appreciate donations to campaign and activism, and know that other instances may be struggling financially. If you are in a position to donate to your instance, please consider donating.

There is zero problems with those that can’t afford it. These are tough times and it’s important to provide a reliable and useful social network.

michaelgraaf,

@Hamishcampbell Your heroic efforts are appreciated. We hope anybody earning from click-through traffic via the instance is sharing that income with the admin.

Hamishcampbell,

@michaelgraaf we are pretty good at weeding out the gritters - the people on here are all real, even if often off subject :)

@Hamishcampbell you said the dwebcamp crew looked out of touch, so I wondered why you thought so. I thing I knew some people who were there but don't know much about the camp and its agenda.

bhaugen,
@bhaugen@social.coop avatar

@Hamishcampbell thanks. I'll look at the video and see if I agree. I know I know what a couple of those people are working on and their projects could be used as a bridge to a better economic system, altho they could also be used as you describe.

But capitalism is a pervasive system, seeps into every relationship. If you want to start anything different it will start within capitalism and then need to figure out how to escape.

Hamishcampbell, to KISS

The purpose and vision for our project is to address challenges and conflicts that currently exist within grassroots organizations and assist in the management of those that arise. By creating a tool set for 'Do It Yourself' (DIY) governance. We aim to develop a 'Keep It Simple, Stupid' () standard framework and process. This will become which can be used in future solutions, organically evolving through time.
