There's very few of us active 'users', who knows how many others are lurking?
In terms of those donating towards the funding of the OMN (which in turn funds and administrates/moderates the 'campaign' instance) there are 10 Financial contributors https://opencollective.com/open-media-network
Furthermore this entire 'fluffy/spiky bridge' thing is also rendered meaningless since the demise of the parallel 'activism' instance unless we're missing a trick here?
Yep this is a shame as the fluffy spiky debate is key to real rather social change and challenge, it's basic stuff.
If we can all build a community to sustain the instances then we can reboot activism as a different codebase than mastodon, the are a lot so the ida is still good, can we build a community of use rather than individuals "shouting into the void" as we unkindly like to say at the #OMN
@Hamishcampbell@nedhamson@michaelgraaf Nah, the silence is deafening, counting the anti-migration people there's only half a dozen active accounts on this instance, let it die.
5.3 metres – the degree of sea level rise now unavoidable from West Antarctic Ice Sheet melting ALONE – is sufficient to entirely submerge most of urban Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dubai, and an enormous area of southern Iraq (Qatar gets off surprisingly lightly).
@michaelgraaf@petealexharris@cy@simon_brooke want to see a great example of that? Check out the Murray River, which is the lifeblood of southern Australia. While not much land goes underwater at 5m of sea rise, lots of the river goes red. Will the entire thing become salt water? That's a death sentence for the river life and surrounding land, including all farms.
The openclective is the funding side of the #OMN and
campaign openworlds info? is an instances that is a part of this wider #openweb activist project #OMN
you can see the money coming out here, but this is mostly only to cover the mastodon instances, as the OVH servers have been paid out of historic foundation funding that has now run out.
One problem is I have not reinbust the activism instance before we shut it down so cant get the invoices for this so looks like am personally paying for the last 3-6 month of use for that instances, bit crap but there you are. Mess.
@Hamishcampbell@michaelgraaf@rooftopaxx So, it seems that I am the only one who is willing to put up some money to keep this instance going. I cannot do it by myself. So Will need to find out how I can find a new instnce and transfer my data to it. Hope there is a way to do it without losing all I follow and those who follow me. Can any one help me with that. Would prefer to keep this one going but cannot afford to do it on my own.
YouTube being aggressive against ad blockers is making me want to never watch another ad from them again, I'm going over and above to make sure ads don't appear on any device that uses YouTube. They are motivating me to invest in this weird war they are fighting.
@michaelgraaf@selzero@andycarolan The aggressiveness seems to only be in Chrome. Work makes me use Chrome and I get that ad blocker message, but in Firefox (on the same machine) I don't., and I don't see ads. I have #pihole on the network and use #ghostery and #adguard in both browsers.
@ithoughtisawa2 Google owns Chrome, so it makes sense that it appears on that. They have greater control over it. It's why I don't use Chrome... also, it's a bloaty mess @michaelgraaf@selzero
@andycarolan@michaelgraaf@selzero I try not to use it either but we are a Google shop at work and they require it for access to all our Google services. I use Firefox for other sites
Imagine going back in time 5 years and telling someone "Ukraine hit the Crimea naval base with British cruise missiles, and Russia didn't escalate at all."
The last few months have really pulled the rug out from under people who thought Putin has his finger on the WW3 button all the time.
I have always thought it unfair that China believed that Taiwan belonged to them. This video summed the situation quite well -
China: Taiwan belongs to China.
Taiwan: That was in the past! We are a sovereign nation now!
China: History is now.
Ryan captured China's mindset well - her leaders think in VERY long timelines. Do I agree with this? NO.
But it is important to know China's culture and history to understand this situation.
@michaelgraaf yea I think this video is just to explain the general idea around Taiwan and China. I believe due to the Ukraine war, Taiwanese now do not want another... Er, proxy war?
This is my periodic reminder to support your instance - nearly all instances are free and rely on donations to pay the bills. We appreciate donations to campaign and activism, and know that other instances may be struggling financially. If you are in a position to donate to your instance, please consider donating.
There is zero problems with those that can’t afford it. These are tough times and it’s important to provide a reliable and useful social network.
