Hollywood liberal, Bollinger bolshevik, choose your favorite pejorative. Turn-ons include film/TV, music, civil rights, architecture, cars, travel, food, gin martinis. Turn-offs include broccoli, bigots and spectacularly awful people like some billionaires who come to mind. He/Him.

I need to internalize—finally—that I’m ALWAYS going to want a drink if I’m ever near the Strip doing something else and just—finally—start always dressing for it haha.

Now for the Venn diagram. Somewhere I want to drink AND somewhere I’d feel least like a schlub showing up like this haha.

I’m always friendly with any restaurant’s staff—setting a tone for the informal vibe I enjoy wherever I’m a regular.

(The classic line: ‘But it’s only Mats’ as a bartender reacted to a note he’d been surreptitiously handed alerting him to the presence of a VIP at his bar.)

Anyway, they’re usually less guarded with me and tell me a lot. But even in that context this stunning indiscretion would shock me.

The closest I’ve had a bartender or server come to criticizing another customer in conversation with me wasn’t even specific to anyone.

He was only showing me how he smiled when he liked someone vs how he smiled when he didn’t. They were definitely different smiles—but clever because a customer definitely wouldn’t know they were getting the Smile of Dislike unless they’d also seen the demonstration.

Sometimes the way people phrase things is so telling. For instance, telling women they should be "taking care of" their husband and children. Another adult doesn't need taken care of like a child, what you want is for women to be a Sex Mom.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr It’s such a bizarre relationship dynamic to WANT. I can’t even relate.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr It reminds me a bit of going to wedding right after college. I was a friend of the bride. And I nearly fell out of the pew when his vow was ‘I’ll lead you as Jesus leads me’ and I thought, oh, how nice, they’re going to lead each other, but then she said ‘And I’ll follow you as Jesus leads you.’

So much for equality. They argue, yes, he’s the head of the household, but he’ll never do anything she doesn’t want. And I ask: Then why do you need the fucking rule?

This is crazy. Even with 20% down, that’s still $4500 a month. And exclusive of property tax—around $1000 a month?—or any HOA fee. And insurance is becoming prohibitively expensive as a lot of the big players either pull out of California altogether or severely restrict what they’ll cover.

I dunno, I kinda think if I can say something like ‘I hope the thousands of children killed by Netanyahu’s relentless and indiscriminate assault on Gaza haunt him until the end of time’ there might just be non-‘outrageous’ reasons to charge the man with crimes.

This is a HUGE deal in a lot of ritzy LA zip codes. Either not being able to get fire insurance at all or being presented with annual premiums like $200,000.

Really wondering what kind of effect this will have on valuations.

What is your dream road trip? Where would you start? Where would you end up? What stops would you make along the way? It can be short or long, whatever interests you!

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr When I was a teenager back in 1985, I spent a couple months with my godparents driving all over Europe.

And as you ask this question, it occurs to me that I’d love to recreate that trip’s itinerary as a sort of 40th anniversary event—how I perceive everything as a 53-year man compared to the memories of a 13-year-old kid. And now that you’ve put the thought in my head, maybe I will in 2025 haha.

It’s sickening to know what the Resnicks are trying to do not only to workers on their own farms but on every farm in California.

Look at their house on Sunset Boulevard sometime and tell me if you think they can’t afford unions.

We only smelled gas in the basement, but they wanted to inspect the whole house, and I swear there was a brief moment where I thought “My house is so messy, I’d rather die in a fire than have them traipse through my whole house!” I console myself that they’ve probably seen worse.

The notion that diners are more okay with added service charges—in some cases so large they exceed a decent tip—than with menu prices that reflect the actual cost of doing business seems completely insane to me. At the end of the meal, I’m paying the same amount AND it feels like a ripoff.

And it’s not like anyone’s comparing menus on Expedia to see which have the lowest prices—where moving a lot of the cost into fees calculated later on means they’d look like a better deal at first glance.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@Jonathanglick Oh, yeah, it’s popping up a lot more. Usually, there will be a note on the menu that it’s for employee healthcare and that sort of thing. And it’s not a tip—like the automatic gratuity for larger groups. In addition to that.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@Jonathanglick Very and very! One restaurant in Newport Beach even politicizes the service charge with a note in the menu blaming it on California’s liberalism. As if any of the diners there would notice something cost $45 instead of $43 if they just rolled whatever they had to do into their prices.

I sometimes hear people talk about "The Monoculture" of the past, and I don't think they know what they're talking about.

Lots of the past gets retro modded to fit the narrative of now. Always has.

When people talk about music of the 80s they rarely mention any of the music my friends and I listened to. And it was mostly not super obscure, most of it was on major labels. Back when major labels did that sort of thing.

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@billyjoebowers What were you guys listening to?

RickiTarr, to random
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

Y'all I just made myself feel so old, hubs looked up top 100 music from 2001, 2011, 2021, and today and the amount of music I could recognize decreased by significantly. I recognized probably 70% of 2001 and decreasing as I went on. BUT I blame the internet, I can listen to exactly the kind of music I want with no dependence on the radio, but also I'm old!

Holberg,
@Holberg@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr I used to be the guy who could’ve worked in A&R. I knew who everyone ‘new’ was because I’d already seen them at clubs on the Sunset Strip. Made mixtapes of music most people still haven’t heard 20 or 30 years later. Went to the Grammys.

But then I turned 40. And started listening almost exclusively to the music of my ‘70s and ‘80s youth. Haven’t even heard of half the acts in the Top 40. I can’t really blame the internet. I just got old haha.

As someone who has to work like hell to lose every single pound, I was gobsmacked when a friend said he’s dropped seven pounds in a week.

Me: How do you even do that?
He: I go to the gym a lot.
Me: I go to the gym a lot.
He: I barely eat.
Me: I barely eat.
He: Oh, yeah, well, and I’m taking Ozympic.

Holberg,

@Jonathanglick At the end of the day, I think everything is down to that math. I just have a body that’s especially uncooperative given how much I make that math happen haha.
