and I decided to see how the carrots we planted in April were doing. Not too bad as it turns out! These are a Chantenay-type called "Moonraker". I grow them in a pot because my garden soil is NOT good at producing decent carrots. These days I plant in a pot and let them get on with it all summer. Pictures show newly sprouted, mid-season, and harvest. The crop will provide many servings between now and winter. We pull them as needed.

In my defense, in graduate school, at the first meeting I went to, my older colleagues, you know, the 4th yr PHD students who were supposed to be good role models, would hog the hotel bathroom developing their Polaroid slides the morning of their talks. So good habits I did not learn until late.

    @eco_amandine Yep. I try to get shots on Friday afternoons, then sleeping the next day, and usually a headache but extra hydration and (weirdly) decongestant helps. Then wake up Sunday totally fine. Saturday is mostly lost but that’s ok.

    Antimalarials give me very weird dreams, too!

    When picking up prescriptions today, I decided I’d start masking up again. Glad I did as the (also masked) person in line ahead of me was loudly telling the pharmacist he was there to pick up a paxlovid prescription for his wife. Ok then.

    Can hear the near endless thumping of acorns on the roof. Really need to go out and shovel the driveway later so it isn’t like walking on marbles. Such a change from last year when drought caused widespread acorn failure.

    Local non-profit greenhouse has an annual garden next to the parking lot that changes every year. This summer, all the employees got a little patch and (I’m guessing) choice of extra plants creating vibrant patchwork of color and hue and a pollinator hotspot.

    @geekaren only a few miles from us. At one point, our home weather station reporting rate of over 5 in/hour (only for a few minutes). We’ve had 2.41 in total today.
