Had to go site walk a quarry I didn’t know existed in our town for a permit renewal yesterday. Most of our bedrock is dead boring, but this was a delight. Look at those layers!

Layered rock salad with thick pinkish layers and finer grained grey layers sandwiched between.
Rocks with different types of layering, some finer grained others with more marbling.

How to use mastodon.

Ignore the weirdo thought police at the door, find yourself, get a nice alcove to sit in. Look around. Try not to be toxic or weirdly manipulative. Block annoying people who think they're still on Twitter and Facebook. Be nice to people, even if you can't be nice to yourself or about life on this stupid planet, at least until being a fuckmuppet is proven..Be aware many weird people are also lovely.

Breathe the rarified Nazi-free air. Chill your paranoid bitchtits. Be.

@lhgmk2 @jd my spouse, a Scientist who studies cicadas once interrupted Sir David because he said something about cicadas that was Not Correct at taping at his field site. Sir D and production crew were Not Amused. This was Not Done. Spouse was metaphorically crapped on by the BBC.

Have just rescheduled a meeting for the fourth time. Higher ups wanted it to be in person, calling in team members from remote locations all over state. Had to schedule three weeks out to accommodate, then postponed due to Covid, twice, now because boss just realized it’s at 2 PM on Friday of a holiday “weekend” and they don’t wanna. And in May someone asked why we were having our fall planning meeting so early. 🤣🤣🙄

    Legal and lawyer types: why do legal documents put numbers in parentheses after the words? eg “you may submit two (2) letters…”

    I understand the general idea of clarity and precision, but is there a historical reason for this? words for numbers are even harder to rubout and manipulate… “seven” is nothing like “four” what started this? or is it even a real thing?

    @futurebird I think it’s a convention, a standard but not a rule. But, visually, if you are scanning a document, it’s easier to pick out than the name of a number.

    Telephone poles seem like something rolled out after a disaster to get wires up off the ground but never intended to be an actual solution.

    "We can't have the cables just laying on the wet ground, what can we do? Any ideas?”

    "We could prop them up with wooden sticks."

    "That'll work for now, but have something more permanent set up by Monday.”

    @andrew what you think of as a telephone pole is a vertical partition of jurisdiction between telecom, electric distribution, cable, municipal and other uses, each with separate regulatory regimes. Even the placement of the pole requires easements from public and private landowners and replacing a pole requires coordinating multiple constituencies. Under grounding not simple as other poster said, not even considering limits imposed by geology.

    Have lived in Connecticut for almost 24 years. Still taken aback by the 169 towns (and jurisdictions) packed into this tiny area. Last week got Ellington and Enfield mixed up resulting in a 30 min longer drive. Today just realized East Hampton, which is just north of Haddam and East Haddam, is west and south, by some way, of Hampton. Not to be confused with Hamden, nowhere near. Also, make sure you know if you are going to Plainville or Plainfield (2/3 of the state apart).

    In the dark years, used to post photos of flowers when I was furious about some injustice, angry at inaction, mad at all the world’s problems no one in power seemed to do anything about.

    I called them Fuck You Flowers. But I never told anyone that’s what they were because anger often breeds more anger without positive action, but flowers, well…flowers at least make space for beauty.

    Sometimes gave me a place to put fury w/o spreading it while I worked out what I could do to make change.
