Hey literature people--

So, I was reading HG Wells and I noticed something I hadn't thought about. He writes in a style that's very weird, and but for the Victorian/Edwardian language might even be considered experimental now? Like, in The War in the Air, it regularly alternates between goofy comedic scenes and scenes of horror and violence. And in between THAT there are digressions about economics and engineering technology. (1/n)

@ZachWeinersmith IIRC Alexandre Dumas and Jules Vernes also had a lot of nonfiction interspersed. Don't just take my word on it but IIRC they sold their stories chapter by chapter and had little incentive to be more direct like in modern novels. I guess they wanted to make good use of all that background they researched (or played someone to, in the case of Alexandre Dumas) and make some time to think the plot ahead

Here's a Markdown tip which I don't think is well known.

Triple backticks marks a code block. But if your code happens to contain three backticks you can use quadruple backtacks (or more) for the code block.

@MissingThePt it's not fair! mathematicians are entitled to redefine the "=" sign or invent imaginary numbers, why can't he revamp the associativity rules? UX means the calculator should be more accommodating

@sfwrtr @jwcph Medical doctor here. It would be great if the computer could guess better than medical doctors what treatment could advert death and improve quality of life. Alas, the computer only could guess what selected doctors would have done, which is not exactly a gold standard

@sfwrtr @jwcph there's research about interpreting scans, biopsies etc for many decades now. Perhaps something is really useful?? Anyway, it's not commercially available when I practice, so I can't recommend patients to get their x-rays or whatever reported by an AI to save some bucks or be more accurate

    Pro tip. (Amateur tip, really.) When you are giving a webinar directly from your computer, hide your desktop. Especially if your collection of scanned books is right there. This is right up there with blurring or cropping your browser tabs in screenshots.

    ABAIXO A MONOCULTURA DA TECLA WINDOWS — Um acessório de R$ 20 permitiu livrar o meu teclado portátil das teclas Alt e Win que vieram com ele e me confundiam: este conjunto de teclas de reposição tem Option, Command e mais, em versão multicolorida, porque é difícil ter na cor das demais teclas originais.

    E o teclado é um Darkflash GD68, que tem o mérito de encaixar, num layout de apenas 68 teclas, uma tecla dedicada ao ` e ao ~ sem exigir combos com a tecla Fn.

    @augustocc fico feliz em saber, mesmo acostumado a Control, Alt e Win. Mas me diz uma coisa, para que serve teclado sem teclas F dedicadas? Acho que sobrevivo sem usar elas como teclas multimídia, mas não sei se sobrevivo sem usar cerquilha, arroba etc.
