Bearing in mind the wise old proverb “never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by stupidity”, I offer the hypothesis that yes, the Russians blew up the Novy Khakhova dam, but by accident. They had deployed explosives there in case they were about to be driven out or some other military contingency, and somebody just screwed up and set them off.

@ShadSterling @pyperkub @TechConnectify Big difference between core driving software — like engine control, abs etc — and say, media related software. I wouldn’t be interested in touching the former, but I sure want to stop my car from sometimes randomly (to me)switching on the radio. Probably runs on very different hardware in most cases anyway.

I wonder whether the name "Vision Pro" indicates that there will be a non-Pro version as well some time.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@manlycoffee they are starting at the high end, like Tesla did, and I think it’s the right strategy for this kind of device. At this stage, its better to inspire people with something unaffordable than bore them with something cheap.

So Apple is putting some version of blogging into the OS?

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@jvan @vruz True, they didn't talk about sharing the journal explicitly, but it was in the context of sharing, and I have a hard time believing they wouldn't provide that as a feature.

Yep, if I'm Meta, I'm feeling toast.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@lauren I don't think I'm influenced very much by hype here. I've been wanting to have 3D UIs since I dabbled with VRML in the 90s. The Quest by and large is a useless device (I own one).

What I see Apple has done is, one by one, knocked out the reasons why I think the Quest is useless. (There may be other reasons that are obstacles that I don't see yet, I can only talk about what I know now.) But how they have done it is something Meta largely can't copy. That's why I said "toast".

"I believe the most compelling use case is for work" . "To put it even more strongly, the Vision Pro is, I suspect, the future of the Mac."

I don't think he's wrong. Time will tell, but not a bad take.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@MattD Yeah, but I don't think he's right on that point. Apple long time ago must have decided that they don't do "social" themselves, instead they provide platforms on top of which others like Meta can do social. And there is nothing in what I've seen that says that isn't possible with the Vision product.

On the other hand, given that Meta is now committed to their own platform, that might create a really interesting opportunity for somebody else, leveraging Apple!

I'm fascinated by the idea of with an external Bluetooth keyboard as a laptop replacement.

Can it be made to work? I have no idea. Can hand gestures be precise enough to do pixel-level work? Maybe?

But assume they can. The ergonomics of looking straight ahead with optimal light/brightness/contrast, vs being crouched down, hurting your cervical spine every minute, working on a too-small screen, which I see in far too many trains and coffee shops, could be huge.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@rauschma It's not obvious to me how a mouse or trackpad would map into 3D space even if the 3D space is mostly used to hold a 2D window.

Hey out there:

Since Bostrom's "we are most likely living in a because with good enough tech there are far more simulations than reality" argument and hullabaloo some years ago, have there been any further significant arguments in that direction?

Wikipedia only has some attempts at refutation of that argument. Or has simply nobody pursued this line of thinking in some significant way?

The funniest thing about this: calling it "spatial computing", when it subscribes even more firmly to the desktop metaphor than any other or project out before.

You buy the because you don't want a more natural way of interacting with a computer, similar to how you would interact with everyday objects. You don't want this kind of ultimate . No, are selling you the exact opposite.

Because staring on various screens for 18 hours a day has actually become your default mode of existence. So this new normal is now able to push the natural 3D world in the background. Your immersion is complete, means the 2D desktop metaphor gets awarded the place in your life it already has. But emphasized. Interacting with the natural 3D world is slowly becoming a tedious afterthought to interacting with the computer.

The is easing you into it. 🤿

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@thomasrenkert I think it's more to ease the psychological (and development, business) shock of having to come up with very different interaction styles in apps. This is a developer release after all. The message "oh, it's just like an iPad app" is much easier to swallow for a potential developer than "you have to completely rethink". Over time, people will discover ... just like "mobile first" didn't happen immediately.

The thing that's so amazing to me about Apple, is that they really really put "design" (in the broad sense) at the center of everything they do. And have been doing even more so over the years. Nobody else even remotely does it similarly.

Like "here I am with my phone on the couch, what exactly do I want to do now, how do I think about it, and what are the fewest and most natural steps to accomplish what I want to do, like watch a movie with my remote friends on the big TV?"

Guessing on the timeline for :

If VisionPro will only be available early next year, they aren’t even remotely finished with engineering it right now. (So they don’t actually know right now what it will cost them to produce it either.)

Sales will slowly ramp starting Q1 next year, US only.

Which means the earliest possible time for a non-pro, consumer priced model is the holiday season 2024. That’s the optimistic case. Before that, no sales volume whatsoever.

On first reflection, Apple appears to have removed all major issues I've experienced myself when trying to use the Meta Quest 2 for something useful and more than very occasionally.

My prediction is that the number of hours Reality Pro is going to be used per user and week, is going to be way higher (like 10x) than for the Quest 2.

“Dangers of woke” is clearly a political strategy that would not work if it relied on getting a democratic majority. That in itself tells you something.

There's those countries and regimes that accept their history, including all the terrible stuff, and those that try to hide or deny it.

Among other things, trying to hide it speaks of terrible insecurity. Your people don't love you any more if they find out? What about instead, you work on being such a good government that people love you even as they know, because you're so working hard that bad stuff will never happen again?
