Let's put people back in control of their technology. The Fediverse is a good start. Also wondering aloud where we are taking this planet.

This seems very important and worth ongoing study:

“Once again, results suggest a rise in diversity as the 10 biggest server contribution to the Fediverse is reduced by more than 10%. So, even if the biggest servers are accumulating more users, it seems that the Fediverse is becoming more decentralized.”

@tchambers @ophiocephalic @fediversereport @spreadmastodon @fediversenews won’t care whether they are d or not. They do this for market positioning reasons vis-a-vis wanting to appear as the good guys wrt Twitter, not to actually interoperate with anybody. More detailed thoughts here: https://reb00ted.org/tech/20230522-what-the-meta-activitypub-not-so-fast/

All in favor of coming up with a coordinated response, when is your call? :-)

Meta is planning to implement ActivityPub? Not so fast IMHO.

@jpanzer I’m sensitive to asymmetric implementations, because that’s the thing that killed as a user centric protocol imho :-)

Bluesky aims to be Mastodon + algorithmic feeds + a better experience moving accounts between instances. As an end user, I’d have preferred this was done in a manner compatible with Mastodon versus being a competing service.

I doubt either will get to critical mass but perhaps together they might.

I think Mastodon would be better with algorithmic feeds and quote tweets. However they dev team seems stubbornly opposed to these features. Bluesky has these features but at the cost of fragmentation

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@carnage4life imho the scope is the fediverse, not mastodon. We need to figure out how to leverage interoperating, heterogeneous apps, not just one app and its built in features.

@counternotions How does Apple deal with the CTO function then? Everybody on the C team is supposed to understand enough?

Note to self: document your design rationales. Because when try to write them down, those "rationales" sometimes don't sound so rational.

We ( @bkeegan @MattNicholson @blakeley ) are researchers at University of Colorado Boulder conducting a survey about social media platform migration. If you are at least 18 and have used Twitter and/or Mastodon you are eligible to share your experiences with leaving (or choosing not to leave) Twitter and/or joining (or choosing not to join) Mastodon. You can optionally provide your email address to enter a drawing for a $75 gift card. Please boost! Survey link: https://cuboulder.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3BLXjcmBmKpyR2S

@cfiesler @bkeegan @MattNicholson @blakeley One suggestion: your stated "scope" is Mastodon -- that's how the questions are phrased -- but many questions cannot be answered in this scope, the correct scope would be the Fediverse. Example: re data collection by researchers: if my posts are made on Mastodon and travel to Calckey becomes somebody follows me on Calckey, what I think is ok and not re data collection would also apply to Calckey.

    Real question: what implications does GDPR have for decentralized protocols like ActivityPub where instances in countries like the US are likely to cache data from users in European countries even if those users are not members of that instance and did not consent to data being stored there? Is there an expectation that covers this?

    J12t,
    @J12t@social.coop avatar

    @ben I'm fascinated by the European approach to tech regulation that puts a regulation out there, not trying to catch all possible cases, and then learn prior to when the regulation goes into effect (by listening to the screams of the would-be implementors), and during implementation. As software developers, we sympathize I would think. So my guess on your question: undefined. "We will get there when it becomes a problem."

    This is probably the last hiking weekend that the California wildflowers are out in the Bay Area. Still enjoying seeing them a lot. Both creeks I crossed so far are dry, and while the shade is cool and green, the California sun is having an opinion about itself otherwise. Time to hunker down, plants!

    I'm increasingly getting the feeling that one of these days I need to reactivate LID -- Light-Weight Digital Identity -- my entry into and created more or less by accident in 2004. Then folded into the larger movement. Some of its more interesting features were adopted by other identity protocols over time, but some others are still unique and would be very useful now that the decentralized, user-owned, social web is waking back up.

    Somebody put all of 's posts so far in one single database.

    Note AFAIK everything that happens on Bluesky is public, and can never be deleted. So this is not a bug, this is a feature, according to their architecture.

    What's the best approach to large-scale code that you know? Start somewhere, commit frequently, and hope for the best? Is there something better than that?
