From recent conversations, it appears the faction who wants to block from the get-go is much more outspoken, but also much smaller than the faction who does not (at least not from the get-go).

I don't have any numbers, and my sample size is too small to have any predictive value, but I thought to post about this, in case somebody else has corroborating anecdotes.

I want to introduce the term "Territory" to cyberspace. A Territory is a subset of cyberspace that is governed by the same entity.

E.g. when I visit a website, I enter the Territory that the website belongs to, necessarily subjecting myself to the governance in effect in that Territory. That may include TOS, content moderation policy, required payments and fees (e.g. app store cuts) etc

This makes it easy to talk about "the rules", because it's just like crossing borders in the physical world.

What do you all think we do here in the ?

Is it “ ”? (It doesn’t sound quite right to me: I post “media” only rarely)

Is it “social ”? (Not sure, it’s different from offline networking, and I feel networked already even without the fediverse)

I’ve been playing with the term “social ”: I’m here to communicate with you all, but not 1-on-1, but socially, where everybody else can overhear what’s being said.

What to you think of the term?

If you were to visualize "data" in your mind, what do you see?

0's and 1's? Probably not. That might be a movie cliche.

Tables of numbers? Of numbers and strings and such?

Files and directory hierarchies?

Or what?

I'm tempted to say "a graph", but I don't actually know how to visualize a graph that isn't immediately a giant hairball.

I’m starting a Lemmy group to collect mainstream press coverage of the Fediverse, ActivityPub and the like. When you see an article on a news site or such, consider submitting it there?

The idea is to “crowdsource” a repository of what the world says about us in mainstream outlets that have a significant audience.

ActivityPub everywhere?

That might very well be a medium-term consequence of Meta starting to implement it for their upcoming Twitter competitor.

Blogged. https://reb00ted.org/tech/20230628-activitypub-everywhere/

It’s seems to me the better strategy for would be attempt to create a division between “peaceful Gaza residents” and “militants” and attempt to get some of the first ones to help rout out the second ones. If they treat everybody as enemy, everybody will fight back as enemy, for the next several generations as it happened for far. And nit getting shot in the Gaza barrel is surely an incentive.

But there’s no indication that is what they are doing. Why not?

A few weeks ago I asked about Fediverse apps that are as unlike as Mastodon as possible. People pointed me to some quite interesting ones, like playing chess over ActivityPub or public transport delay announcements https://social.coop/@J12t/110843539252937792

Today I hear that is working on decentralized merge requests over ! If this comes into being, this could be a really major development for the . https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/-/epics/11247

The Twitter-to-Mastodon migration looked like a one-off.

Until the Reddit-to-Lemmy migration. Which makes it two now.

I am sure our favorite cloud overlords are watching very closely.

Who is next?

Somebody who is not very technical asked me whether what we do in the Fediverse is " software".

Which is a very catchy name, and sort of related, but of course architecturally different if we go with the Ink & Switch definition: https://www.inkandswitch.com/local-first/

I'm going to go visit in San Francisco tomorrow for their "Threads Interoperating in the Fediverse Data Dialogue". Not exactly sure what to expect, or who else is participating, but I figure I can listen and learn and make up my mind afterwards.

They say it's Chatham House rules, meaning I can post this and whatever else interesting transpires. No NDA involved.

Regardless where you stand on the meta-and-the-fediverse question, I think having more info is better.

In preparation for and various other things, I'd love to hear people's opinions on:

  • what are the next three things we need to accomplish in the ? (anything goes, from tech to moderation to funding to ...)

  • how would we go about this?

J12t, to random

I'm attempting to articulate the difference between chat, chat-in-a-group and posting-plus-responses for others to overhear as we do on social networks. (IMHO the clear boundaries between those can only be historically explained because certain products did certain things and that sort of defined the categories.)

I'm playing with "1-on-1 communication", "group communication", and "social communication" as terms. Are there better ones?

Imagine two identical with mainstream users. Same number of users, same connectedness of the social graph, same demographics etc.

Social network A only has an algorithmic feed. Social network B only has a chronological people-I-follow feed.

What would the usage numbers look like in comparison? Numbers of posts, numbers of likes/replies/boosts, growth trajectory, etc?

I would expect somebody has done some research on this. Anybody know of any public results?

If you were to demo the to somebody who had never heard of it, and only had time to show one single feature, what would you demo?

I don’t mean a demo that focuses on or or or any other software, but that focuses on the special value that the network, the fediverse, brings.

One that gets the coveted “wow” in response to the demo. Thoughts?

Anybody using Firefox Containers?

If so, how do you organize your containers? By site? (E.g. you have a Google container, and a Microsoft container) or by persona? (e.g. you have a container for all sites where you using foo@bar.com and another for baz@foo.com) or ...?

Anybody know what triggers a profile re-fetch in ?

After an instance accessed a remote account for the first time, it fetches name, avatar, number of followers etc. When will it fetch it next to potentially update?
