TIL MDN wants to not have the unnecessary and W3C recommended-against trailing slash on void HTML elements in its documentation examples, but can't because Prettier is broken and won't fix it because React ruined everything.

In March, Apple will allow people in the EU to install apps from outside its app store, use less expensive payment processors to pay for services, and get better integration between first- and third-party apps and features.

I just changed my Apple App Store-managed subscriptions to all expire this summer so I can switch my App Store country from the US to Sverige to get these benefits.

Changing countries in the Apple App Store results in losing some purchases, which is why I hadn’t yet.

“I can’t believe I did negative self-talk in front of my new therapist and got called out for it in just my second session. This happens every time. I’ve worked on this. I should be over this by now. I never learn.” —me to myself moments before noticing the thought, managing the thought, replacing the thought…

I was so confused by the Bitcoin ETF. Why not buy actual Bitcoins?

https://www.coindesk.com/learn/2024/01/11/bitcoin-etfs-explained-what-are-they-how-do-they-work/

And then I learned there are single currency ETFs. Why not buy actual currency?

The abstraction layer of a fund manager provides no protection I can identify. Is it just easier buying/selling/trading?

Search engines are hard. I used Mojeek all day today because I like its approach. Unfortunately, it did not return what I needed within the first 10 results even once successfully.

DuckDuckGo remains my default with occasional Google use for local shopping.

Unless you work in Zurich, you are underpaid as a software engineer in Europe compared to your US peers.

My only regular experience with desktop Linux is Raspberry Pi OS.

The GUI is buggy. Today, the taskbar disappeared when I turned on the monitor. As I dragged a window, the taskbar reappeared. I released the mouse, but the window kept dragging offset from the cursor.

I feel like I cannot rely on it because if there are that many visible bugs, there likely are more invisible bugs.

I am sure I could spend time researching and tweaking, but I have better things to do than fix a default.

Governments creating a mandate for non-anonymous Internet access gated by authentication with a government-issued id is a bad precedent regardless of how you feel about pornography.

Earth’s 24-hour rollout of the 2024 release went well. It added millions of people every hour without a single incident. Personally, I love the new year and welcome the upgrade.

Before responding to someone online:

• ask yourself what emotions you feel and examine if they are valid

• ask yourself what outcome you desire and examine if your response is likely to achieve that outcome

• ask yourself if you would consider the response truthful, kind, necessary, and helpful if roles were reversed and you received what you wrote

• ask yourself if you would be ok with your response being the last thing you ever posted online

I want Firefox to succeed more than ever and I support Mozilla finding better revenue sources than search engine default sales, but I do not support a $7M salary for its CEO.

I canceled my recurring donation to Mozilla because I need that money more than Mozilla’s CEO needs that money.

If there is a direct funding option of developers working on Firefox, I will happily reallocate that money. Send me links.

After 3 logicboard replacements over 6 weeks, my Samsung washing machine seems to be working again.

Getting it reconnected to my Wi-Fi so that I get the push notifications when it’s done instead of the awful 60 seconds of Samsinging was nearly painful enough to make me start an open source smart home appliance company.

Shepard Fairey released a new artwork based on Belal Khaled‘s photo of a boy crying in pain from injuries as blood runs down his face. It is free to download and encouraged to reshare in order to increase awareness of the estimated 18,000 Palestinian civilians killed by the Israeli military in response to Hamas’s attack.

I missed in November that Apple announced it was adding support for RCS (Rich Communication Services) next year.

https://9to5mac.com/2023/11/16/apple-rcs-coming-to-iphone/

RCS is the successor to SMS and MMS that brings cross-platform read receipts, typing indicators, high-quality images and videos, and possible end-to-end encryption.

This likely is a concession to the EU, which is trying to force iMessage interoperability, but Apple is fighting on a technicality.

Firefox v120 brings a preview of good privacy features pioneered elsewhere probably because they were too high risk for it do first.

Firefox users in Deutschland can soon enjoy

  1. Cookie Banner Blocker by default in private windows to auto-refuse cookies and dismiss annoying cookie banners for supported sites

  2. URL Tracking Protection by default in private windows to remove non-essential URL query parameters often used to track people across the web
