The fan on my ThinkPad (running Fedora) hardly ever runs either. Cool and quiet. :)

@passthejoe I agree completely. Although I don't use it much for desktop work, I have a low-end NUC that runs AlmaLinux very well in desktop mode. Wayland support out of the box and Flatpak there to provide the latest apps.

If one has bleeding edge homelab hardware, the latest mainline kernel from ELRepo runs great on Alma. Last I heard, kernel 6.9 (due out in May) will contain a complete rework of the CPU topology logic for heterogeneous CPUs (Intel 12th-gen and newer)

@passthejoe The latest long term support kernel (6.6 as of this writing) is also available for EL 9 distros, if one so desires.

No. Google Chrome’s app icon consumes 1.5GB RAM, before the browser is even launched.

Looking forward to incrementally improved font presentation in on . I have a personal guideline against buying a laptop or desktop monitor that requires fractional scaling to look correct. Fonts on GNOME already look good with integer scaling, in my experience.

And of course, this quote is worth repeating: "Text rendering differences are always subtle and, to some degree, a matter a taste and preference"

Lincoln, NE was 81 F at 3 PM. Relative humidity 9%. Winds gusting to 38 mph. This is west Texas weather in eastern Nebraska. 80+ degree weather was unheard of in my childhood, growing up in Omaha and Lincoln.

The record high for today is 79, which breaks a 128 year old record by 2 degrees.

The best antennas for free live news, sports, and more: Expert tested https://zdnet.com/home-and-office/home-entertainment/best-tv-antenna/ by @sjvn

Today, antennas are making a comeback. Why? Two words: Free TV.

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

@sjvn Hopefully ATSC 3.0/NextGenTV DRM doesn't end free TV as we know it. I'm glad that I live in a market (Memphis) that is still firmly in the ATSC 1.0 world.

I type this as my wife is watching Chicago Fire, recorded on our over-the-air Plex DVR weeks ago.

philbaker1,
@philbaker1@fosstodon.org avatar

@sjvn There's no technical reason why ATSC 3.0 can't build on the features of 1.0 and be even more awesome. Dolby Atmos, 4K HDR. Better signal reach. I was excited.

But after all the mergers, the few big companies owning local TV stations are asserting themselves. Fair use law dating back to the VCR era may go by the wayside. I hope I'm wrong.
