If you live in the US, please tell your congresspeople that the EARN IT bill should not be considered. It would allow state governments to set up client-side scanning of photos and messages, bypassing encryption. #security#privacy
It seems like the biggest complaint is coming from business who say that targeted advertising is too effect to lose like this.
My response: of course it is! You're basically spying on people. No wonder your omnipresent targeted ad works better than a billboard. That still doesn't make it right to spy on people. Take the L and find another way.
Despite me not liking Mastodon's move to make mastodon.social the default for signing up on the app (rotate between big, stable servers instead), I do think it's important to give @Gargron credit with how he's lead the project up to now and not demonize him. He's one of the main guys that helped to build the thing that we really want to protect. He's been doing it before most of us were here, since 2016. I understand having important conversations, but let's lower the temp, myself included.
@kev My rule of thumb has been that if someone's posts tend to have a high percentage of frustrating or irrelevant posts, it makes it more likely I unfollow. That tolerance level goes up or down depending on my... mood? But it works to trim out the content that I don't find helpful. And that call is usually made with the next post made that reminds me of the negativity.
So maybe next time someone mentions Musk, consider whether that person is worth continuing to follow?
