Preface: I don't mean this as a slight and I use Firefox every day.
When I look at Mozilla's actions from the outside, I don't understand what they are doing to try to dig themselves out of the market share and Google paycheck hole they are dug in. I don't see the strategy. I don't see them heading a direction that I think as long-term hope for being independent. There's gotta be something I'm missing. #Firefox#Mozilla
@yoasif I think those are the most concrete steps to diversify, but even those attempts don't seem like they're landing and have been met with criticism.
Pocket has not been received well by a large part of the community. VPN is a front end for Mullvad last I checked, so the most privacy minded people just use Mullvad directly. Hubs seems like an experiment in a market that I don't see taking off just yet.
@yoasif Otherwise I don't think I necessarily have issues with those. I would just like to see them be really successful and pushing something forward independently rather than being indirect ways of funding Firefox (because that's the real reason you're bothering with the service). But that's just my use case. Maybe if they were developing products I was more interested in I would change my tune (happily).
@yoasif But then you look at those options and look back at Firefox, and it makes me wonder what are they doing with Firefox or browser adjacent businesses? The last big feature I can remember was Firefox View and Firefox Color before that? Meanwhile you have Brave and Vivaldi coming up with different features or business cases to stand on their own. I don't see innovation, growth, or an eye toward solving problems coming from Mozilla, for as much as I like Firefox currently.
@yoasif@slowbyrne The tab stacking, tab groups, panels on the side with different functionality. Vivaldi targeting the power users. Brave trying to be more independent with Brave Search. Their web3 stuff is cringe, but I see more development that's connected to the browser than I do from Mozilla.
@yoasif@slowbyrne I wouldn't call it window dressing. That's how they can market their browser as unique among others and the reason to go for them rather than continuing to use what we currently use.
I get that Gecko is a huge beast to manage and I do respect that. However, if all you have time for is building a browser with a non-Chromium engine and it can't compete with features that other browsers have, why would average people switch?
@yoasif@slowbyrne At that point you're using Firefox because it's a good cause. That can't be the main selling point for a product that has to compete with one of the most used pieces of software in the world. They have to do more to compete or find other businesses to subsidize the one that isn't competitive.
I got to visit the Yogscast offices today and shake hands with people I grew up watching on YouTube. I felt like Troy in the episode of community where he gets to meet LeVar Burton, though my wife assures me I did better. Anyway, thanks for the tour, Daf!
Never thought I would get to this point, but my task management system has been blown up so much that I think it's time to try a paper and pen system. Haven't kept an agenda since... high school, lol. Things are desperate, but I'm excited to try bullet journaling as my sole way of managing personal todos.
@vwbusguy I've tried fountain pens before but wasn't my bag. Was into roller pens and then gel pens, but nowadays I'm very happy with the humble Bic ballpoint. :)
@mike@kev how does the Explore page work, as in how does Fosstodon determine what posts show up there? Is it different to how it works for vanilla Mastodon? #Fosstodon#Mastodon#MastoAdmin
I was wondering because I noticed differences in boosts, favorites, and follower counts for the posts that showed up, but I haven't been paying enough attention to tease out trends.
I supposed even if we did know how the trends worked that it wouldn't be promoted heavily, lol.
@mike@kev Well, thanks so much for the insight! I guess roughly speaking what you would be looking for is one post with crazy engagement or one post that can have less engagement if buoyed by a trending hashtag. Doesn't really change how I would write a post, which is kind of nice that there isn't something complicated to game.
If I can get away with one more question: is the Explore page used a lot? Is that something you guys can see on your end?
Anyone used Todoist and TickTick before? I'm going through that phase where you think a new task manager will fix all your problems, and TickTick has piqued my interest.
@nekohayo@GettingThingsGNOME I need something web based and with an app that has a widget. A task manager is so core to my survival that if I don't have these things I will forget to by the electric bill, lol
@kytta hmmm, not thrilled about the Chinese company part. I'm also very privacy conscious so this may be a deal breaker for me. But it looks so cool... maybe I can forgive that? lol
I think my time with pywal is slowly coming to an end. It's not that it isn't good, it is.
But since I've started this random wallpaper thing, I've come to realize that I have maybe 1000 horrendous wallpaper all of the same color blue. You never know how many blue wallpapers you have until you use pywal.
Maybe I need to change the backend and see if that makes a difference. If not, I think I need to do some custom themes again. I miss standard gruvbox.
@thelinuxcast I had a similar experience with a random wallpaper switcher I used on Windows. Some of them were great, but most of them are not my taste. When I'm waiting for the next day just to get a new wallpaper, it's a sign that wallpaper picker is not my bag.
Time for the second "Nest with Fedora" virtual social hour for those of us who want to hang out but couldn't go to Flock, lol. Join us in 45 min at the link below! #Fedora#FlockToFedora
We'll be having our first impromptu "Nest with Fedora" social hour in 30 minutes! Join our matrix channel and we'll coordinate from there. :) #Fedora#FlockToFedora#NestWithFedora
I'm kinda on the fence about this feature right now. I can see where it would clean up the appearance of some posts. I'm not a dev on it or anything (or on anything else really), but I'm curious what your thoughts are.
@mike As someone who uses hashtags a lot, I think this would help find a place for hashtags in a post. I primarily use them so that other people searching with the hashtag can find my post, but many times it's a challenge to find where to add my 1-5 hashtags, lol.
Because some of us can't be at Flock, I decided to host two virtual social hours tomorrow for us to hang out and talk about Fedora or whatever we want to keep each other company. Fight the FOMO! lol
