What is the hardest you've ever worked?

If you want to tell me the hardest you've ever worked it, please provide photos.

@RickiTarr “Pitching” watermelons in college was the hardest I’ve physically worked. We’d meet a bus from the border in the Sears parking lot at 3am. After a 1.5 hr drive to the field, workers lined up hunched over, one per row, pitching & passing melons to the next guys in the line. At the outside end you only pitched melons from your row. At the roadside you were pitching yours plus everyone else’s from the line up to a couple of guys in a truck or on a trailer. Never slept better.

@RickiTarr hardest I ever worked mentally was as an Arabic linguist in the Air Force from 1998-2007. Language school was tough, but not compared to some aspects of the job that followed. I’ve never been so completely overwhelmed & in over my head, or so elated at something that barely went right, or so deep in despair when something went wrong. I’ve never been so aware of the catastrophic consequences of a simple mistake, or so proud of the people I was privileged to work alongside.

In my lifetime, most flowers, insects, and birds have disappeared from Dutch farmland, over 50% of our country. Any reform of farming will have to address this massive biodiversity crisis.

@Sustainable2050 I’ve been paying close attention to since long before this picture was taken at a 4-H club meeting way back in 1981. I’m sad to report that my own sightings of various species, including all of the large I used to see through the Midwest every season, have been drastically reduced since my childhood, but especially during the last few years.

5 yrs ago I was working for Schwan’s, driving throughout rural Colorado & Utah west of the Rockies. These pictures were taken near Silt, Colorado on January 30th, 2019. Here’s what I had to say about that job at that time: “These pics are of the types of places we go where we stop the truck due to hazardous conditions, then get out & walk 1/4 mile to the customer’s house to deliver. Just one reason why some people love us.”

I really did enjoy that job; it just didn’t pay quite enough.

A Schwan’s truck parked on an icy road in the hills near Silt, CO with snow-covered mountains in the background.

@KE0FFT@mastodon.hams.social avatar

The thing I loved the most was the interaction with the customers, many of whom were isolated, elderly and living alone. For quite a few of them, their Schwan’s delivery represented the only opportunity for social interaction they’d have all week or all month. The customers made this job much more valuable than the income alone, and the employees were all great people with a sincere desire to provide the very best service for those who were looking forward to their deliveries.

I experimented setting up for last night for the first time. No contacts made, but I did figure out that my BCA-300 Dual-Band Mag Mount Antenna tunes nicely using the Yaesu 857D and the YT-100 tuner. So maybe sometime in the not too distant future I’ll actually make a QSO. I was tuned to 52.540 as it’s one of the designated frequencies for HamActive’s event.

My wife just tested positive for COVID for the very first time. I’m still negative and have never had it as far as I know. The really odd thing is that our mini- dachshund Stella refused to sleep in the bed with my wife for the first time ever on Tuesday night. Weird!

Someone on the fediverse said the John Oliver segment on Musk was meh. I don't watch his show or even most segments but decided to give it a whirl. At some point early in Oliver says something to the effect of, "There are people who absolutely love Musk and there are people who absolutely hate him. This is probably going to piss off both of them." Being someone who at this point complete visceral contempt for the man, more than anyone I know, but thinking I arrived at it honestly (who doesn't think they arrive at their opinions honestly), I watched on. At this point I know every nook and cranny of the reality of Musk, the perceptions of Musk, and everything in between so nothing presented was novel. Honestly, I thought the segment did a solid job of distilling the whole debacle that is Elon Musk into a an entertaining yet informative 15 minute piece that hits all the broadstrokes. I thought that so much so I'm sharing it. #ElonMusk #JohnOliver #BillionairesShouldNotExist

Posted this on my LinkedIn acct today. Figured some here might find this interesting as well. I was a #MorseCode Operator in the #USAF in the early 90’s. In later years, when friends and family would ask why the Air Force had any need for Morse Interceptors at that time, I often struggled to answer with clarity; because as far as I knew, much of the information worth sharing was still classified. So, I was happy when I discovered this video, which the #NSA released a few years ago…

This is a video I came across today that’s been around since 2018 - but it doesn’t come across as being completely outdated. A good one to oass on to non-hams how ham radio can be more than just a hobby. ~ https://youtu.be/JJxPM2X2uQo?si=blwr3ZFYHv-v8TWG

The view of Venus and the moon in the predawn sky, looking east from my driveway on Wednesday, November 8th, 2023 at about 5:45am. I only had my iPhone unfortunately; so the moon’s form didn’t turn out as well-defined as I would’ve liked. Still, a decent pic of a beautiful morning.
