I believe that Youtube's warnings about adblockers are the beginning of the end for Youtube as a citizen of the Open Web, and the latest volley in the fight that will end with the death of youtube-dl, invidious, etc.

This road leads to DRM powered by EME, and that would be the fulfillment of the promise made by EME when it was launched.

@ajroach42 That's a price point I'll jump into, though I'll have to see how the discoverability and UI stacks up.

As a viewer, the experience for a stream was good, though trying to browse instances to find stuff to see was a nightmare

@ajroach42 I like it, but the font is pretty hard to read on some of the backgrounds. Nice trailer though!

    @quincypeck @ryanhoulihan Oh good. I was wondering, since I'm used to being able to change every single tiny aspect to customize from launcher to default app to theme

    Longplay_Games,
    @Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

    @quincypeck @ryanhoulihan you have to hack it to change the theme?

    I find it disturbing how many job openings there are right now for really obsolete tech + electric polygraph requirements.

    Did a whole bunch of old security people just die?

    Sorry, but I'm not being strapped to a chair just to manage your websphere infrastructure.

    I'd ask "is there a way to stop the new mastodon from autoexpanding images, from putting every single favorite in my notification with the entire web preview expanded, and to get favorite notifications without it showing the whole thing to me every time"

    But the answer is pretty obviously no.

    This version is a huge step backwards in user experience.

    Longplay_Games,

    @Brett_E_Carlock I have not - those are instead of going to my instance's site directly?

    @Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

    I'm confused - where's "local" on the new Mastodon?
    That's where I spend the majority of my time.

    Longplay_Games,
    @Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

    Oh, I see, it's the one with a globe that says "live feeds"

    That's... utterly ridiculous.

    The unity complaints are annoying to wade through, but are also literally why we pivoted off Epic's UE 2 years into development.

    When a company moves the goalposts on your livelihood, you realize you're in their power.

    That gives you a really simple choice.

    We made ours, now the unity folks get to make theirs.

    Testing out the extremely inexpensive ($30) music player I purchased for someone with the help of the Fedi.

    So far, it's actually quite reasonably decent. It's not going to win any awards, but it's not DOA or garbage so far.

    Hope the can help with this:
    Looking for a music player for a very specific edge case.

    • Bluetooth
    • MicroSD
    • 8-9 hours battery
    • Smaller than a mobile phone (or a phone would be used instead)

    Been looking all over the internet and everything in this niche seems to either be very poorly reviewed or super sketchy.

    It's for someone in a demanding/harsh job that precludes just using a mobile for music/audiobooks.

    Scammers are filling Spotify with ai-generated chiptunes. Lolol wait until they find out what pays for 1 million plays.
    Bandcamp pays like 800x more for me per play (based upon sales after plays).

    I need a new seat for the bike i just bought, but all the bike seats now look like either an alien pelvis with a weird vagina hole in the middle or they're super wide cushioned seats for feeling like you're sitting on a couch while you ride

    @MLE_online I use the Selle Anatomica myself, or did when I wasn't too disabled to cycle.

    Lots of people are in my mentions today telling me that I'm irresponsible for believing in and recommending creative commons share alike licensing, and accusing me of being deceptive or somehow harmful for preferring cc-by-sa works for the magazine I'm running.

    I usually don't rise to greet these kinds of complaints, but there have been a couple today, and all of them carry an accusatory tone, one explicitly accuses me of being ethically corrupt for saying that I prefer submissions under a creative commons by-sa license, but I will consider other licenses.

    I feel compelled to address this, because it's fucking ridiculous, and it's irresponsible to pretend otherwise.

    Longplay_Games,
    @Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

    @ajroach42 I once published a magazine under CC-BY-ND and it was so hard to explain how it works to people.
    I was paying top dollar for stories, and not even requesting the copyright, but they still preferred to sell their entire rights away for 2/3rds what I was paying.

    Oh well.

    So I downloaded a whole bunch of free or pay-what-you-want Game Boy games off itch.io for my Game Dad. They're all made with GB Studio (which is a free super-easy game-making program to make Game Boy games) and so far they're all pretty chill.

    A highlight is Analog Age Rainy Day, which has you playing as a kid trying to survive a rainy day; catch is it's 1984 so there's no phones or game boy or anything so you've gotta find ways to amuse yourself.

    A lovely benefit of using the Game Dad for Game Boy games is the ability to shift the palette so that it's red-on-black for playing in bed without giving me insomnia. It only works for Game Boy games though, not Game Boy Colour or Advance; I wish this were an option I could toggle in Retroarch for all my games.

    I'm getting into the idea of writing my own Game Boy game and I think I want to make it about a tiny smol officeboy/retailboy who gets laid off and joins a moving company to make a bit of quick cash, and finds that he loves using his body and feeling those aches and becoming stronk. And like this is possible now, it's very do-able to make a game that isn't about saving the world or whatever, doesn't have to have mass appeal enough to justify burning a bunch of ROMs and moulding a bunch of cartridges, you can chuck it up on the internet as easily as we could copy a tape game in a boombox thirty years ago and if ten people fall in love with it then Hooray.

    @tehstu @ifixcoinops I really like the Kobo Auras for this (I even did a whole article where I compared several), but the Kobos have full blown waterproofing and a super sharp screen.

    Alternatively, the low-end android tablets (like the lenovo m5/m7) can be had for around $50 on sale and work quite well if you really like having color for things like comics or technical manuals.
