Now that my work for my prior dayjob is over, I have been able to return their apple laptop and now have room for my model M again.

Oh it feels so nice to once again do the majority of my typing on a real keyboard designed for real use. Had this thing since 1997 and I hope I die before it does :D

Please correct me if I'm mistaken, but it seems trivial for a malicious service to send signed (against itself) activities to other inboxes to spoof content from other domains.

UNLESS the public key host matches the object identifier host, right? That'd be a sensible and low-effort way to ensure obj. integrity.

But that would preclude the use of a third-party http signature service, although I suppose that is only a potential implementation; nothing I've witnessed in the wild.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@devnull I remember when PGP first really started rolling and PKIs became a thing, we thought we had most of this problem solved.

Turns out - not so much.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@devnull IMO, you can never trust a service where you, the other party, and a third party have the keys to your convo.

I suspect encryption is still doomed simply because the average person cares so little about privacy and security that they'll discuss intimate details on speakerphone in a queue.

Folks, pleare remember to review games. Stuff like Steam buries your games if you don't get enough reviews fast enough.

I was asked today about the ethics of substack, and where that sort of mid-length article writing could be hosted now...

I just have no answers. So I'm going to - where would you do that? Ko-fi perhaps?

Y’all realise that money is the problem, right?

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@dgar To paraphrase an excellent quote from Oyate:
"If we tried to set up a native butcher store to serve native buffalo only to natives, some agency would be here with guns and permits in 15 minutes to tell us why we aren't allowed to do that"

I'd really love to see Hololens 2 side by side with the Apple Vision Pro.
Speaking as someone with some growing movement impairments making it harder and harder for me to do my regular work, I'd love to see which one (if either) would restore the most of my capabilities.

I played the new Star Trucker demo on Steam. And it's fun! It's basically "American Truck Simulator in Cowboy Bebop".

This game has potential. If you take the job seriously, you'd think you were there. Out there.

Star Trucker should be available in 2024.

@TheSpaceshipper I was amused by this one because it was made by a publisher we pitched Smugglers to, and they said they weren't interested in the idea.

Then made this :D

If job application sites could stop doing stuff like exploiting job seekers to train their AIs, that'd be greaaaaat.

If you get an Apple Vision Pro today, and are looking for a native visionOS calculator, may I suggest my PCalc?

It's a universal purchase with the iOS version, so you might even already own a copy!

You’d think folks writing the HTML spec would know the difference between an HTML attribute and inline JavaScript but you’d be mistaken and that’s why we can’t open a modal dialog without client-side JavaScript in 2024.

🤷

PS. What would be great to have is:

<dialog modal open></dialog>

So that a modally-open dialog can be streamed from the server without requiring client-side JavaScript to trigger it open when it loads.

Why are people around the world mentioning the German train schedules in the same breath as punctuality?

Trains running late is a running gag in Germany. 🤷‍♀️

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@grrrr_shark @dreadfulsanity Very true, If you wish to take a train between two of the larger cities in the US (Phoenix and San Francisco), there's only one connecting train per day, and the arriving train is often too late to catch it. By hours.

Happened to me twice.

Do Catholic priests in other countries do their rounds to collect money and bless flats at the beginning of the year?
It's a thing here in Poland.

I don't think it's a thing back home in Germany, but I come from a very equal Catholic/Lutheran area and maybe it's different in other areas.

Anyway, we pretended to be a good Christian family again on the off-chance that the kids want to have first communion.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@Tim_Eagon @kyonshi Same here in the US, even in the relatively religious zone of NM where we have posadas that still isn't a thing.

I get first class when I’m travelling by train in Finland cos there’s free coffee and the price of a first class ticket is a rounding error compared UK equivalent.

There’s no coffee on the last train to Tampere (oh noes!) but I’ve been refunded 8e of my 29e (wtf!) ticket due to VR being a national disgrace.

You don’t get a refund for sitting in actual piss on the floor of a UK train, and the last coffee I attempted was from a fucking bag. (Toots passim)

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@k And somehow everyone seems to admire the UK/US models of society.

Longplay_Games,

I mean, you can hate on Steam because of DRM, overhead, fees, asset-flips, hate speech, thinly disguised porn, AI-made games, or whatever - but there's also this:
https://luxurylaunches.com/transport/gabe-newell-luxury-yachts.php

30%. I am supposed to give this dude $100 + 30% + fees of every game I put on Steam.

Now you know why we promote Itch and Gog, where at least the cut is smaller.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

Something non-devs may not realize is that while steam takes 30% off the top, publishers take their cut from the remaining, as do engines like Unreal and Unity. Don't forget all the subscription model tools that go into dev as well.

It's not uncommon for a dev to sell a game and realize only a small fraction of the price. In theory this is to reward these other companies for their investment and foresight, but this is also why we use

I wish I were more disappointed that Humble's new 'learn to code' bundle is almost entirely exploitive AI BS.

Unfortunately, that's just who humble has become over the last while.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@britt And as you say - AI is a much harder, darker force to evade than a bunch of suspiciously racist monke memes.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@britt I truly hate using the term AI for those bots, much like I cringe when crypto is used for bitcoin... but some words just get ruined.

I went to uni specifically to study AI lol. Or rather, expert systems, as they were back in the 90s.
