Everyone trying to use AI for artwork, for development, for automation remember -

You get nothing for free. AI is a like a deal with djinn, there will be consequences.

Just put in the effort and learn the skill.

I wish I were more disappointed that Humble's new 'learn to code' bundle is almost entirely exploitive AI BS.

Unfortunately, that's just who humble has become over the last while.

@aral That's wild, most of the people I know are by far the most intense critics of the companies they work for.

Fascinating infographic about the growth of video games! Some thoughts:

  • Of course mobile gaming crushes everything. Everyone has a smartphone on them constantly, it’s how Gen Z prefers to game, and it’s more accessible in developing nations.

  • PC gaming is now bigger than console gaming, and I imagine it’s going to get bigger now that handhelds like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally are taking off. Nowadays, you can have that console experience on PC.

  • The infographic says handhelds are dead, but I question that: the Nintendo Switch is a handheld, and so is the Steam Deck.

  • I’m glad that VR/AR is continuing to grow, but they really are a pain to use.

  • Seeing how console gaming substantially lags behind mobile and PC gaming, can we please stop treating it like the “premium” way to game? Not only are fewer people on consoles, they don’t even offer the best performance.

  • I’m shocked that arcades still have life but it gives me hope for that one arcade in my town that still exists.

  • All this growth in gaming makes me even more upset about all those lay-offs that occurred in 2023. I hope all those creatives get back on their feet quickly.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@atomicpoet Doesn't surprise me that consoles (xbox/ps5) are falling so far off. When I was contacted by a porting shop about porting to console recently, they were pretty frank - consoles typically sell one copy of a game for 10 copies sold on steam in their experience.

So they recommended I lean WAY harder into the steam and steam deck.

There's no reason that page requires a captcha, unless you're being overwhelmed with bots giving you money.

So, my current workflow for watching anything that anybody posts to YouTube is to first try it in Safari... if it detects ad blockers there, I open the link in Firefox, which seems to deliver a short pause, then plays the video.

Ads on there are obnoxious, prevalent and most often un-skipable, that watching anything on the platform has become a chore. If they lowered the price of ad-free, I may consider it, but at the moment, it's more than just about any other streaming service.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@andycarolan I do the same, my youtube viewing is restricted almost entirely to posts linked from patreon.

They could just as easily be owncast for all I'd care, really.

As today is the Dreamcast's 25 anniversary in Japan, it's only right to celebrate the launch of one of the most incredible systems ever in style.

It only lasted a couple of years, but burned brighter than most systems can dream of.

At times I feel like understanding is a lost art. A running joke for loose coil wires has been "it should be wireless so this won't happen". As a gag I cut of the wire lugs from a dead coil and printed a custom Bluetooth wrapper for it. I posted that on social media.

The amount of "it can't work", "scam!" and calling me incompetent and/or stupid was just unbelievable. Some took time to explain why this can't possibly work. All this after all the PCB repair work I've posted.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@apzpins Reminds me of my annual april fools joke of posting a pic of a piece of fruit with mocap dots on it, and then a rendered pic of the same fruit and titling it "behind the scenes mocap shot"

I quit doing that when people started getting all mad how stupid i was to do motion capture on a piece of fruit.

Maybe this "computers for everyone" thing has gone too far.

I love so much that because there's no 'favorite' algorithm on the fediverse that people give posts favorites just because they like them.

That's the kind of positivity we need more of.

40-core GPU version of M3 Max dropping GPU benchmarks comparable to RTX 4080!

I’ll be expecting an upcoming Mac Mini with M3 Ultra with 80 core GPU that’ll make nVidia shit themselves.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@dgar Unlikely, since Nvidia is largely focused on cloud and embedded AI and rendering - and apple doesn't even dogfood their own systems as servers.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@dgar Maybe, but as much of a fan of ARM as I may be, apple has never been able to scale beyond personal.

If we're lucky, AMD and apple will eventually collaborate and drive nvtel straight out to the bin.

Longplay_Games,
@Longplay_Games@mstdn.games avatar

@dgar But do recall that the IBM/Motorola PPC chips were some of the best silicon on the planet, literally a baby version of the stuff IBM used in minis and mainframes and apple dumped it in favor of Intel to save a buck.

I will say that it's faster to write but it's so much harder to write a parser for without the metadata.
