@LovesTha@floss.social

A melbournian with many interests:

  • Christian (very liberal)
  • Embedded Linux Engineer
  • Magic The Gathering judge
  • Mechanical keyboard enthusiast (mostly DIY, all very small, Colemak layout)
  • Trying to get into woodworking

All too often I come off as argumentative, I'm working on it but definitely a work in progress. Also frequently more pedantic than I'm comfortable with.

I've got a 3440*1440 screen, keyboard and mouse at a small deck in the lounge room. It's primary use is for WFH while supervising children and does that well with everything plugged into the monitor and USBC to the laptop works great.

Sometimes I'd like to play some light games (Tabletop Simulator mostly) from the desktop in the garage on this setup, but without using the work laptops.

What device should I buy to facilitate this. What ever it is I will install some Linux on.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

3440*1440 means 4th gen Intel or newer for embedded graphics right....

Physically smaller than this would be nice.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@sortius not intending to do any local graphics.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@sortius remote graphics counts as 2d, so Intel onboard should be fine

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@sortius UHD is gen 9 and newer? So gen 4 through 8 struggled to push 2d at full res?

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@sortius ark says 4th gen on supports 3840x2160@60Hz, which would be dissapointing for them to not actually do.

Skye, a perfectly acceptable name for a child.

Having your children's names fit a theme is fine.

Don't name Skye's brother Ground.

No, just don't.

What TV shows do you recommend lately? Always looking for a good new show to watch!

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@cjerrington (didn't see the other recs for Silo before posting :) )

Ted Lasso and Mrs Maisel both finished in the last few months. Two excellent shows that handled ending excellently, and in completely different styles (full but minimal closure and full and wide ranging closure respectively)

Having meticulously and tediously created a complicated composite footprint in for a new regulator circuit, I just want to go and update all my PCB designs to use it. It is smaller in area so should slot in quite well.

It's killing me waiting a week for PCBs using this to arrive so I can check it works as well as the old one.

Footprint with components.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@ScaredyCat @Miq @revk The replicate layout plugin also sounds like it does some of the desired functionality mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

Kicad wasn't something I expected to want to install plugins into.

I was wrong :)

Busy morning, trying a new regulator (MD8942), synchronous, and somewhat cheaper than the LMR16006. 4V-36V in is a nice range. I'll see how well it works when the comes next week. Side by side comparison on oscilloscope...

A tantalum output cap may be overkill though.

LOL, and I am told tantalum caps: "They can be used as very effective incendiary device ignitors 😊 " so maybe I'll change that.

@bbeaker @revk And radically increases costs for two sided assembly :)

(Put the foot print on, you can decide to populate by hand if the hum annoys)

For the first time in ages, traveled across town using OSMand+ rather than Google Maps for by-turn directions. It was impressive, given relative investment in OSM vs Google. Also, OSM's directions warned me of approaching pedestrian crossings and speed bumps. Cool!

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@lightweight I would be interested in something that gives some privacy while collecting such data. But the number of users required to make it valuable would be such a large barrier :(

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@alcinnz @lightweight Or are you saying they are buying the data from Google/Apple?

Ouch, Slack didn't notify me that a colleague had messaged me multiple times since the 14th until today :(

IS: Do you have any screen shots of slack not notifying you?

(not their words, but that is the gist of the request)

Hanging out at the drive-in waiting for the movie to start, and some little kids are playing catch on the lot in front of the screen.

Kid 1: Go back further! I can throw mad far!
(throws ball about 2/3 of the distance between them)
Kid 2: That was not "mad far", Owen.

Kid 1 (a little sadly, mostly to himself): ... well, I wasn't even trying.

LovesTha,

@AbandonedAmerica What Australians think of when thinking of a bat is much bigger than the rest of the world, so that is pretty scary to me

    @ifixcoinops I can understand wanting to use it in an article that is going to use the word more than once a sentence, but then you define it at the start of the article and reuse it after that. Using them cold is wrong.

    @delroth makes a great point about the recent Linus post defending the trans community, that I agree with 100%:

    [Poa dot st] is already on the "worst of the worst" lists. This type of stuff is all they do. Every well moderated server on the Fediverse already has them blocked. Why do we make it hard for new admins to know this?

    Making them easier to avoid is the work that @Are0h is tackling. It should be easy and automatic for admins to opt in to deny lists that remove the "worst of the worst."

    LovesTha,
    @LovesTha@floss.social avatar

    @Are0h @mekkaokereke @delroth Yes, it's just is it good to have a default or should we require selecting an option?

    I don't like a default, but one is better than letting instances be set up easily without choosing one.

    I don't trust Eugen to select/allow a good default.

    LovesTha,
    @LovesTha@floss.social avatar

    @Are0h @mekkaokereke @delroth Default block list. I'm referring to:
    "* Admin sees prompts to opt-in to a daily updated, multiple sourced, dynamic deny list that contains the "worst of the worst," along with a clear description of what that means"
    This wording implies a default list, I don't trust a good default to be chosen by the package maintainers so I'd prefer that to be a prompt to research and enter a chosen list.

    @Linux_in_a_Bit They need to apply laws consistently, so any 'TikTok ban' needs to be applied to other companies too.

    And 'ban' is wrong, strict laws around privacy and data handling are better. It may amount to a ban, but one with a reasonable reason behind it.

    There's a review on a paper that's a great put-down of the concept of renewable aviation fuels here. TL;DR Hydrogen & batteries are too heavy for long distance, and biofuel would require the additional cultivation of land the size of Argentina. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUAaO3r_7Bc

    The new ".zip" domain is being used almost solely for malware. Some of the clicks are very deceptive, even to technically knowledgeable people. See the attached image for an example.

    You can block all zip domains with the following uBlock Origin rule:

    ||zip^

    Tell everyone you know.

    LovesTha,

    @hypolite @mcv same character set is hard. Not allowing all the symbol blocks shouldn't be too hard.

    A theme I saw yesterday & unwittingly contributed to: Old protocols are perfectly satisfactory. The issue is that as technology is brought to the masses it gets filtered through the lens of capitalism!

    Personally I quite like:

    • HTTP
    • HTML (caveats)
    • CSS (caveats)
    • RSS
    • XMPP
    • eMail

    I tend to be quite cynical about what gets sold as innovations, but I won't say there ever was a golden era of computing we've fallen from grace from.

    ~2000 had good standards though!

    @spearmintwarlock @alcinnz @DrFriendless there are good 'defaults' it's just that you still have to select them.

    It would be nice for browsers to support markdown selecting a CSS theme and then more directly support markdown
