"Here’s a Clever Way to Uncover America’s Voting Deserts:
Mathematicians are using topological abstractions to find places poorly served by polling stations."

https://www.wired.com/story/voting-deserts-maths-topology/

Sure, this is clever. But you know what's even more clever? Eliminating polling places entirely and switching to 100% vote-by-mail like in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Vermont, and Hawaii.

(With some in-person polling places as needed for accessibilty reasons)

MichelleKry,

@ahimsa_pdx @alan

I just moved from OR to CT. A local guy was whooping it up on how great it was that CT now has 3 (? I think) days of early voting. 'In person?' I asked. I felt deflated when he said yes and that only for extenuating circumstances could you get a mail-in ballot. Missing OR.

Let me put it this way: This Statistics conference is wonderful and instructive on so many levels. Simultaneously, I cannot help but think “Wow, does STEM need the humanities,” given some of the conceptual questions here that seem new to many but have been debated for decades. What defines violence, for example, is prime territory for history, philosophy, polisci, sociology, gender studies, Black Studies, etc. I really need some STEM folks to take multi- and interdisciplinarity more seriously.

MichelleKry,

@Itty53 @historleans

I am a lot older than the typical STEM student today, but I recall being told the story of how Steve Jobs studied calligraphy which gave rise to the more approachable Mac user interface.

Also as a sw developer and over the years, my teams appreciated folks with varied interests because they would bring more creative solutions to the table. Although, getting companies to hire such individuals was not that easy.

Proposed legislation to reclassify short-term rentals as commercial businesses would roughly quadruple property taxes for tens of thousands of STR homes in Colorado.

MichelleKry,

@coloradosun
I agree with this for spaces that are only used for short-term rentals.

I also think we should have a progressive tax on long term rental properties. The incentive being that they should be put on the market for home ownership.

the whole thing with zombies eating brains makes no sense. hardest part of the body to get at & no nutritional value. grey jello. human celery. often also bitter. zombie should eat livers, possibly toes. I'm starting a podcast

Toes, yes. Serves you right for wearing sandals in the cold.

Mark Meadows out here using immunity from federal prosecution to tell us that not only did Trump lie about the election, Meadows himself also lied repeatedly in the book he wrote about being Chief of Staff. https://abcnews.go.com/US/chief-staff-mark-meadows-granted-immunity-tells-special/story?id=104231281

MichelleKry,

Are they going to move Meadows' book to the fiction section? 😅

BREAKING: It appears that SCOTT HALL has become the first co-defendant in the election interference case to take a plea deal with prosecutors. Much more to come

MichelleKry,

That seems kinda light. I am hoping the first one gets the sweet deal and others will face stiffer punishment.

CA Dem lawmakers care about the : Major corps from oil & gas cos. to retail giants would've to disclose their direct GHG emissions +those that come from activities like employee bus travel. Leg. would require 1,000s of public & private bus' that operate in CA & make >$1B annually to report their direct & indirect emissions -goal:⬆️transparency & nudge cos. to evaluate how they can cut their emissions *still need approval by the state Sen & the gov's sig. https://apnews.com/article/california-climate-change-emissions-disclosure-reporting-companies-123fe15c840b82f960384cbe04f3d955

MichelleKry,

@KimPerales

I'd like to see a gas/electric tax to fund the state to monitor emissions from all sources. Put out reports that accurately document who is paying the tax and how much and where the pollution is. If it is more expensive to pollute, then companies will look to cut costs.

The press still normalizes the Republican Party, covering last night’s debate as if it were a contest among contenders for the presidential nomination of an institution committed to U.S. Constitutional democracy. So we get headlines about who “won” or “broke through”. This is both silly and dangerous. The important news is that the Republican National Committee, sponsor of the debate, remains committed to Trump if he wins the Republican primaries.1/

MichelleKry,

@heidilifeldman
I was happy to hear Chris Christie state that upholding the Constitution was most important.

Hard to watch them breakdown the 'raise your hand' vote for if Pence did the right thing. I suspect most didn't want to answer that.

Pima County jail commission to redo meeting online after protest scuttled previous event https://www.tucsonsentinel.com/local/report/081723_jail_commission/pima-county-jail-commission-redo-meeting-online-after-protest-scuttled-previous-event/
After last week's meeting was derailed by a raucous protest, the committee tasked with evaluating whether Pima County should build a new jail said they will reconvene Monday. However, the next meeting will not be in person, but will instead be held online.

MichelleKry,

@TucsonSentinel

Yet another benefit of the pandemic, we can transition to online when the need arises. Whether this case is good or bad for democracy, probably not, but with the constant threat of unhinged, violent people out there, then the process can continue in a safer, more controlled environment.

The unspoken context behind the "Battle of Montgomery" video:

  • When media mentions "blue collar" jobs, they usually picture rural white folk. But... most employed Black and Latinx people work blue collar jobs, and most people live in cities. In the US, blue collar employees are Black and brown.🤷🏿‍♂️

  • Blue collar employees are often asked to enforce rules, (like mask mandates).

  • When racist white people get drunk, they often use slurs against, spit at, or physically strike these Black workers.

MichelleKry,

@mekkaokereke
I feel that videos in the hands of most is a turning point for civil rights. We are able (forced?) to see how ugly some are.

May I recommend this podcast episode for how there's a "group that conducts visual investigations by merging data and design to create new pathways for justice"https://www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-lawfare-podcast-bringing-digital-evidence-into-the-courtroom

They were behind the NYC payment of $13M to the 2020 protesters.

Try taking a deep breath before responding. It will give your brain time to think before responding or ...not responding! I have found the long awkward silence gives the speaker time to reflect on what was just said. So powerful.

"that hurt my feelings"

"I'm going to have to reflect on that before I respond. Talk to you later"

"Sorry you feel that way."

The idea of arresting San Francisco drug users to "force them into treatment" only makes sense if you willfully ignore the fact that there's a waiting list for people that voluntarily want to go into treatment.🤡

We have 💰 to pay cops overtime to arrest, but not Drs to treat, addiction.

MichelleKry,

@mekkaokereke
In Oregon, we passed a law to decriminalize drugs. However, they didn't set up a system to take care of them. So now, people are screaming about how the mostly homeless addicted folk are roaming the streets and the police are not doing/cannot do anything about it.

I supported / still support the decriminalization,. I have also noticed many more homeless people, trash and graffiti. The race is on for setting up support for these individuals and the repeal of the law.
