What a horrible couple of days

MiriShuli,
@MiriShuli@mstdn.social avatar

@ProfB We have told our children, especially the one who became a nurse during the pandemic to default. We will handle any fallout to their credit rating. And we have decided that we will now ask everyone we hire their religion and will no long hire or do business with Christians. This is the country they wanted, this is what they are going to get.

Damn. As expected:

Steve Vladeck:

: strikes down Harvard and UNC race-based affirmative action programs.

… says they illegally use race.

Mystal:

John Roberts says that affirmative action at Harvard and UNC violate the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

That means it's dead.

It's 6-3. Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson dissent.

MiriShuli,
@MiriShuli@mstdn.social avatar

@GottaLaff Well, well. Isn’t this quite the tell. But you know what, that phrase is a double edged sword. I can begin to construct the argument that the schools that graduate a disproportionate number of Supreme Court justices also have “distinct interests”. I hope we drive an 28 wheeler through this mouse hole.

In my second book this year--an elegy to the magazine--I lament what happened to NatGeo at the hands of Rupert Murdoch.

@jeffjarvis Oh my word. Who decided to sell to Rupurt Murdoch?! Why do we let men like him become so damn powerful?

The latest guessing game in Donald Trump Land is who was wearing a wire as the boss laughed about keeping "cool" classified war plans, then admitting it was illegal.

Fun times at the Ketchup Wall Motel.

@kbeninato I think it was the guy in the room who was working on a book. Everyone in the room should have realized they were being taped/talking in front of the writer. I just cannot find the identity the writer.

Study: In the first two years of the pandemic, the US saw an estimated 1,179,024 excess deaths. While it struck large metropolitan Northeastern counties early, "nonmetropolitan Southern counties had the highest cumulative relative excess mortality by July 2021." In other words, Republican, rural areas most likely to deny the risks, reject the vaccine and refuse to wear masks.

@nuncio @augieray I’m not following in that how does the CDC profit financially from worrying about malaria?

The CDC stopped getting accurate Covid numbers a long time ago because red states didn’t collect good data in the first place. The whole attempt was just nuts.

Which reminds me I need a booster.

    @Teri_Kanefield Except, even I can spin this. It’s Wray stopping the investigation. Wray is a Republican/Trumper/The Family. Remember he protected Kavanaugh. Biden WOULD weaponized everything if there were not good people like Wray to stop him. And yes, of course Trump could then attack Wray, consistency doesn’t matter.

    @Teri_Kanefield Teri, I do think Garland was being partisan by being so timid. I understand the different lines of reasoning and that he was /is a no win position. I think Garland picked what he thought was the best course of action. It’s just that “justice” and the “rule of law” were not the boundaries of his positions. I have family members with security clearances. You will never know the depth of their anger toward and sense of betrayal by Garland.

    @GottaLaff Sorry. I don’t buy this about the FBI. Given what I know of the history if the FBI, I assume everything they do is in service to the GOP, racism and the patriarchy as a whole. Comey hated working for AG Lynch and it showed back then. If they stopped short, it was to protect Trump et al.

    MiriShuli,

    @GottaLaff Of course Wray quashed the investigation. Honest to goodness, does no one remember which side Wray is on??

    lambo, to fediverse

    I find it increasingly annoying, if not unbearable, how culture locks itself out of the larger Web culture of crawling and indexing everything unless some person or some server explicitly disallows. Being able to and find anything from huge amounts of published posts has become an essential, core part of how research, discussion, research publishing and more is being done on the web, since more than twenty years by now. It is essential for addressing the right persons. It helps greatly in finding ongoing debates, and to add to them. No, these essential tools for online discussion can not be replaced by hashtags. Show me the proper for https://doi.org/10.1177/17470161231180449 - I hope you get my point here.
    Today, as the Fediverse has brought us a decentralised infrastructure for distributing, storing and connecting online discussions, we have better means to fence out hate speech than before. The dispense of being able to search for things goes far over the top.
    Quite the opposite: I fear that to keep going on like this will risk to loose what we have reached.

    MiriShuli,
    @MiriShuli@mstdn.social avatar

    @Myndex @lambo Then go where the algorithms are. Honestly, the whole fediverse does not have to be the same. If you want your content searchable, by all means produce for an algorithm. Leave the rest of us alone.

    It is quite a rhetorical choice to argue that the reason there’s been little action on guns is foot-dragging on the left. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/08/texas-shooting-mental-health-republicans-abbott/?itid=ap_philipbump

    MiriShuli,

    @pbump. No. If “most” people truly supported any gun laws at all, they would elect people who would enact those laws. They do not elect anyone who would do that. Beto even got fewer votes last time he ran. This is exact.y what they want. They LIKE the violence.They like living with fear and they want the rest of us to live in fear.

    The clear message I am getting from Bluesky is that black people felt unsafe on mastodon. Black Twitter was a huge part of what made it special, and it's been notably absent on mastodon. I will be sad if mastodon loses to a less-open alternative because it couldn't figure out how to be welcoming to everyone.

    MiriShuli,
    @MiriShuli@mstdn.social avatar

    @mekkaokereke @TootUncommon Black Twitter used Quote Tweet in a “call and response” way. Not having the ability to QT also stopped a lot of people from engaging here last Nov/Dec during the first migration. One female astrophysicist landed on a Nazi/racist instance because we all said it didn’t matter which instance you chose, as you could always move. Her experience in Nov was horrible and scared a whole lot of folks away. I watched in horror.

    It seems likely that both Tucker and Fox will be weakened by the former's firing. But it's murky: there's not much precedent for Carlson's status and Fox's current weakness. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/04/24/fox-news-tucker-carlson-trump/
