"Since March 25, when the bird flu virus was confirmed in U.S. cattle for the first time, weekly sales of raw cow’s milk have ticked up 21% to as much as 65% compared with the same periods a year ago."

This is why we can't have nice things.

Vague Patch Notes: The problem with forever adding classes to MMOs
🔗 https://massivelyop.com/2024/05/09/vague-patch-notes-the-problem-with-forever-adding-classes-to-mmos

MrAptronym,

@massivelyop for FFXIV in particular, I think job balance isn't an issue within each role, things have basically always been fine. I think the bigger issues are:

  1. That achieving balance has been done by creating a fairly locked, similar playstyle for most jobs. Revolving around 2 minute buffs and 1 to 2 minute burst windows.

  2. Role balance is contentious. Ranged DPS and their mobility tax, casters and the rez tax. Healers are dull ouside of the hardest content.

MrAptronym,
@MrAptronym@mastodon.social avatar

@massivelyop I do think we are hitting diminishing returns on jobs now though. Having 4 of each role (6 for melee!) Is a lot of options for each. I am not sure adding a 5th healer has the same effect as adding a 4th.

I would really prefer they focus on diversifying playstyles. If that was new jobs, fine, but I would rather we make each of the current jobs feel more unique

@eniko I saw this and not the first post, I didn't know you played FFXIV, but I instantly knew this was about lalas.

As a Femroe player I can say all my creepiest PMs come from lalas.

Disappointed but not remotely surprised to watch Microsoft shutter two more studios. They are second only to EA in aquiring talented devs and destroying them. Arkane has been one of my favorite studios on the modern era. Redfall may be a mess, but Prey was an amazing title. Immersive sims seemed to be having a renessance, but maybe that time is over. Tango gameworks didn't even have a 'redfall'
Scared for Arkane Lyon and Obsidian, two longtime favorite developers.

Serious question: why is it that so many people apparently have real problems adopting ISO 8601 dates and UTC, in a professional context?

As in, are those somehow fundamentally incompatible with human nature? Or do people just completely lack the cultural awareness to understand that some of their colleagues are used to a different date format than they are, or live in a different timezone, or don't use daylight saving time?

The other day I had a discussion with a friend of a friend who was shocked that I thought Joe Rogan wasn't particularly smart or a good interviewer. He actually stopped me later in the night to ask why I thought that, and told me he had never heard someone say that.

I keep thinking about that because I have not felt so far outside my own bubble in years.

Life boomed on #Earth half a billion years ago. You can thank #magnets.
The near collapse of #Earth’s #magneticfield coincided with a spike in #oxygen levels and a boom in #biodiversity, according to a new study.

@BenjaminHCCarr This is something I have seen a lot of in isotope systems: great work on a narrow subject that they try and sell with a shakey story.

It always frustrates me. Looks like really solid work here on the paleomagnetics, but that isn't as exciting a story. Papers need a story to get published, so they swing for the fences. The H escape stuff is just not convincing to me and I don't think they explore the literature and theories on oxygenation as well as they did the paleomagnetism.

MrAptronym,
@MrAptronym@mastodon.social avatar

@BenjaminHCCarr The WaPo headline seems irresponsible there too, presenting the tenuous causation as fact. It is weird because the article itself is responsible and well written.

About 20 years ago there used to be a joke about physicist and engineer trying to fix a broken car and a programmer asking "have you tried to get out of it and then back in again?"

Seems Tesla Cybertruck IS that joke:

I have a theory that Tesla is going to eventually get out of the car business and just make batteries.

MrAptronym,
@MrAptronym@mastodon.social avatar

@bigzaphod That may be a good move for them, my knowledge is a bit out of date, but I recall them having some good capacity in the battery field. I doubt it though; it seems like they are still promising fantasy tech.

They have burned their early mover advantage in EVe at this point, and they seem allergic to learning any lessons from the rest of the automotive industry. They certainly need to make some big move soon or they will only keep slipping.
