Any of you lot using Logic Pro on iPad for casual music making?

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@ianRobinson I’ve been using GarageBand on iPad. Haven’t tried Logic Pro yet but am interested b/c I prefer using a tablet to record.

Headstock tuner! Why haven’t I tried one of these before? Easier than a pedal.

Hmm. UA fix golden reverb > strymon nightsky > OBN clock reverse > mirrorhouse > but what compressor to use hmmmmm :blobcatcoffee:

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@ambergrey That sounds like a great signal chain! For the compressor, DAW plug in or separate unit?

New GraphTech nut installed.
Does it fix tuning issues? HARD NO.
G and low E pull sharp when I use the tremolo.
Maybe put a Floyd system on it - $$$.
Cheap Kramer. Hockey stick headstock.

@eyesquash that truss rod cover is cool, though. Is that a Baltimore pet license?

I should be recording, but I'm not.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@eyesquash Me too! I got my latest song mapped out and ready but everyone else in the house is still asleep, the vampires.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@eyesquash to be fair I can record without amp speakers but there’s all the string ringing, foot tapping, cable swapping and mumbling to myself that would be intrusive to the sleeping beauties.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@eyesquash @NigelTufnel Yeah I get that too on Saturdays. Don’t feel like a human until after dinner. Well let’s post our chord charts for inspiration. My latest song is called Firebird or maybe Grind.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@eyesquash oh nice sorry I missed that post. Yep this is similar to my process - writing the chords out is mostly for me just a way to measure the length of the song sections and keep me organized for GarageBand. Still gotta memorize with my hands what to play for those chords! It usually isn’t strumming but a picking pattern.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@eyesquash @NigelTufnel Yeah it’s got a minor vibe and was originally noodled in Em. I use the capo to make it sound slightly different than the guitar Em everyone knows but also to allow for the same open string patterns. Makes playing melody lines bloody hard though. 😀

Clean and restring for the Doheny today. Four months on this set - it might have lasted longer but the axe was getting dirty and fretboard needed some juice. How long do strings last for you, ?

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@Traiken @NigelTufnel Oh yeah, what’s a set of bass strings cost?

Funny - where I want to be seems magical, where I am seems ordinary, and when I get somewhere I want to be, it is still ordinary.
Maybe my sense of wonder is dampened by a lack of selective serotonin reuptake inhibition?
Ah, if dangling a shiny imagined time in front of me keeps me putting one foot in front of the other, maybe it's all good.

@eyesquash @L0wKey Me too 🎸

Check out Buck Dharma's wild-looking from the Burnin for You video in 1981!
Search tells me it's a Balestra Vulcan(?!). It's Z-shaped, kinda like a flying V with the lower leg chopped off and an Explorer's lower bout added.
A recent Robert Baker video featured Tom Bukovak showing off his first guitar and playing riffs, including one from this song, so I'm trying to learn it - but I'm sidetracked by that guitar.
It would not fit in any stand I've seen.
https://www.buckdharma.com/Guitar/pic04.html

Another still from the Burnin for You video showing Buck Dharma playing his wild guitar. He's leaning back and holding the upper leg of the guitar with his right hand. He's wearing a foil vest and sporting dark curly hair and a mustache. You can see the guitar has two white humbuckers and a white pickguard that goes down from the pickups and over the lower bout.

@eyesquash Great screen grabs. I hadn’t seen what BÖC looked like until recently but that costume and guitar is right outta Flash Gordon from 1980. Best part of ‘Burnin for You’ for me are the guitar stabs during the verse - all with a short repeat except the last, which is longer and dry. Love it!

New track! This song started with a G major to Em figure that evolved into a layered extravaganza with a lead melody I really like.

Ok, I’ve finished my Ab / C minor instrumental and posted to Bandcamp. It really feels like Eb major to me now. There is one open string in the key, I discovered, and worked that in. Otherwise Strymon Volante again for the guitar tracks with the bass, drums and piano tracks done in GarageBand. This was loads of fun to create and a wonderful escape.

I’ve been working on a song in C minor - what the hell was I thinking? Three flats and no open strings for . I was studying B Dorian - that’s the Wicked Game key - but then went up a half step and played Ab / Cm as an opening chord and it sounded so cool. The other chords flowed from there - flats and all, and in between the usual fret markers. But you gotta dance with the one that brung ya. It’s going to be a cool track.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@boxspring @GuitarSith Ah, the B Bender! I recall Paige using that with The Firm post Zeppelin. I just spent some time down the B Bender Wikipedia page rabbit hole.

    A clear bright blue fall sky is visible behind the black porch screen. The maple tree leaves have turned and are red, yellow, and greenish brown. Fall is here. Happy November and thank you for listening!

    @ambergrey Really wonderful - eerie and calming - loads of ambience with beautiful vocals. I like the percussion far in the background. Brushes on a snare? Just lovely. 😀

    @NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

    @ambergrey oh that’s really cool! I like adding ambient sounds. I recorded a wonky AC hum at my dentist’s office with my phone and put it into a song. Had to shift the pitch 3 half steps to be in key. How’d you do the clock in this track?

    NigelTufnel, to guitar
    @NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

    Ok, I am a humbucker guy now. Thanks to your advice about modern tremolo (vibrato) systems I bought the G&L Doheny HH on sale, in old school tobacco sunburst. Wasn’t expecting to get humbuckers at all and was looking at the G&L Doheny with jazzmaster style pickups - but this guitar jumped out at me on Reverb, the color first, the rosewood fretboard, the trem system which was my original motivation, and then … the pickups! Bonus: the body is pine!

    NigelTufnel,
    @NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

    @LadyMarth01 Agreed! I prefer the available finishes on the Fullerton Comanches compared to the Tribute series. The natural finish with maple fretboard and black pick guard is my favorite. Now I must admit I hadn’t heard of Reverend guitars before - that coffee burst is beautiful 😀
