Ok, I am a humbucker guy now. Thanks to your advice about modern tremolo (vibrato) systems I bought the G&L Doheny HH on sale, in old school tobacco sunburst. Wasn’t expecting to get humbuckers at all and was looking at the G&L Doheny with jazzmaster style pickups - but this guitar jumped out at me on Reverb, the color first, the rosewood fretboard, the trem system which was my original motivation, and then … the pickups! Bonus: the body is pine!

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@eyesquash Yes, the tone knobs handle bass and treble for both pickups, so rolling off the bass does what you’ve suggested. It’s a useful system. The middle (treble) tone knob is also a pull-push to split the humbuckers into single coils, and that makes for some versatile options. 😀

A clip of decisions chapter 2. Vocals, guitar etc by me 🖤 what does it make you think of? Just a black video for now, audio only.

The video is black. For now the song is audio only. Thank you for listening!

@ambergrey Oh my that’s beautiful! I want to hear the whole song now. The guitar tone and notes ever so slightly reminded me of Wilco’s Impossible Germany but the riff and vocals make this its own thing. Lovely.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@ambergrey You’re welcome! One of many great songs from Wilco, this track’s intro figure always catches my ear with its Jazzmaster “both pickups” tones.

Question for the and players: if you couldn’t rely on your fretting hand for vibrato, what guitar and vibrato bridge system would you choose so you could get that expression with a bar? I’d like to play more lead lines in my compositions but fretting hand vibrato and note bending is a path to injury for me. So I’m looking at guitars with effective vibrato bridges and the G & L Dual Fulcrum Vibrato on most of their models looks like a good place to start. 1/

@ambergrey @GuitarSith Yes, please! I looked at the Am Pro Strat VERY closely before deciding on the Doheny. The pine body was a big attraction for both.

@GuitarSith @ambergrey RocKihnRoll! A classic from my middle school years. Nicely executed and great Strat tones!

Curious what everybody feels about electric guitar strings! I want to try a set of Elixir strings. I like Ernie Ball regular slinky. Super slinky too. D’Addario (so?) have nice resonance but to me there is some uneven balance in tone and some muddiness in the lower ranges.

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@ambergrey @woolie @GuitarSith Great question! Curious myself what others prefer and I hear lots of love for Stringjoy. I was a D’Addario guy years ago and am now Ernie Ball Super Slinkys. Honestly I only notice the sings when they get played out and dull. Otherwise I don’t really notice a difference.

Is there an analog sequencer that behaves similarly to the Logic step sequencer? I love the calculator green colors and the straightforward visual cues. Does anyone have recommendations for a good set of packs to buy for Logic or Kontakt for sound layering that would be similar to Postal Service?

NigelTufnel,
@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@ambergrey Love the Postal Service! Don’t have any suggestions, though. Just love for what they accomplished with sequencing. 😀

Alright , I want your thoughts. One of my friends is selling off his synths and pedal collections to get a more focused setup. I'm thinking of nabbing a few for myself to add to my own excessive collection. 😆

What I want to know: what would everyone else choose to grab before he sells them off?

What I have, for reference: https://mstdn.games/@LadyMarth01/110811157643903929

@NigelTufnel@guitar.rodeo avatar

@LadyMarth01 If I didn’t already have the Deco I’d grab that. Also the Chase Bliss Mood but I have two delay pedals with loopers now so my pocketbook says no way. 😀

What this illustrates to me is just how overrated Dr. Dre’s production skills are 👀 https://www.whosampled.com/David-McCallum/The-Edge/

NigelTufnel,

@patrickworld Damn this must be going around online. I heard a radio station play this origin track for Dre’s sample just yesterday. I had no idea it was sampled.

NigelTufnel,

@patrickworld Ah, that makes sense. I thought it was because of that ubiquitous Uber Travel Dad commercial that features Dre’s track.

Couldn't resist getting yet another fuzz.

The Fever Dream, by Pine-Box Customs and Mask Audio Electronics is a fuzz with a modulatable resonant filter.

Oh, and a CB radio microphone which runs through the fuzz and filter, naturally.

It's a noisy thing, more than capable of overwhelming your guitar playing with the resonance of the filter. Dial it back a bit, or roll down your guitar's volume, and it's much friendlier.
