Octale

@Octale@nerdculture.de

Once upon a time, I did a podcast about video games and put things in space. I spend most of my time these days laughing at hypocrites, charlatans, and journos who prefer narrative over fact. I have contempt for the institutions who spent 50 years lying to The People about everything that matters.

What is your dream road trip? Where would you start? Where would you end up? What stops would you make along the way? It can be short or long, whatever interests you!

@RickiTarr my 2 favorites are:
Denver -> Boulder -> RMNP -> Granby -> Denver

Oslo, Norway -> Sandvika -> Honefoss-> Roa -> Oslo

Both have sights I consider to be unique in the world

    Stack Overflow announced that they are partnering with OpenAI, so I tried to delete my highest-rated answers.

    Stack Overflow does not let you delete questions that have accepted answers and many upvotes because it would remove knowledge from the community.

    So instead I changed my highest-rated answers to a protest message.

    Within an hour mods had changed the questions back and suspended my account for 7 days.

    Diff view of a stack overflow question showing it being changed from the original text to a protest message, then being changed back again by a mod. Protest text reads: Why does OpenAI get to profit from our work? I have removed this question in protest of Stack Overflow's decision to partner with OpenAI. This move steals the labour of everyone who contributed to Stack Overflow with no way to opt-out. OpenAI has a history of flooding the web with inaccurate information and have explicitly stated that they will never pay creators for their work.

    @Octale@nerdculture.de avatar

    @ben my question is how are they going to train a Stack Overflow AI to be insufferably smug while providing a correct adjacent answer?

    Just 60-ish electoral votes away from 11 counties invalidating the voices in 80% of American land mass (where the food comes from).

    I’ll give you 3 guesses how those counties vote, but you’ll only need 1.

    Also, surprising no one, @dangillmor is nowhere in sight, almost as if all his handwringing about democracy is just partisan propaganda.

    Octale,
    @Octale@nerdculture.de avatar

    @dangillmor sure. You’ve gone on and on about democracy and the media failing to cover threats to democracy, right?

    Well, the NPVIC is as big a threat to American democracy as there is. Newsweek not only doesn’t recognize it as a threat, but they actually like it.

    Hadn’t seen a post from you decrying the media failing to ID a threat to democracy. But the NPVIC also guarantees the DNC wins every presidential election, so maybe that’s why you don’t see the NPVIC as a threat?

    Octale,
    @Octale@nerdculture.de avatar

    @dangillmor true enough, but American democracy is a distinct flavor different from pure democracy. You’d agree that both parties have known what the rules for how to win the presidency are, so the electoral college shouldn’t be a surprise.

    Maybe I’m overly sensitive because I grew up in WI, but it seems plain to me that the only reason anyone cares about WI is because it can swing presidential elections.

    The NPVIC guarantees no DC politician will care about WI ever again.

    Octale,
    @Octale@nerdculture.de avatar

    @dangillmor and I guess I care more about what the people who make and grow the food think about things than I do what hedge fund people or Hollywood people or tech monopolists think about anything.

    If anything, the CO cattle rancher should have MORE of a voice than they do now, not less.

    Maybe my view is too idealized or whatever, but I do know when a person’s campaign priorities are The Hamptons, Wall St. and SF, they aren’t OH, WI, MI, and IA.

    Octale,
    @Octale@nerdculture.de avatar

    @dangillmor so is the NPVIC. We’re just going to have to accept the impasse.

    Politicians before every war:

    @RickiTarr the Prussians do it once, become Germany for winning it, and suddenly everyone thinks they can.

    Key difference being the old adage about Prussia, “An army with a state”

    Though this is likely the first domino that leads to postmodernism, too, so maybe a time traveler should rethink 1870-1871?

    @RickiTarr if it weren’t for social media, I’d say we’re in October or November 1847. I don’t think populations in EU or NA are capable of a summer of revolutions.

    Kinda too bad, too, because we’ll also never get a “Blood and Iron” speech for a modern generation, either.

    @RickiTarr I gave up a career of ~15 years to immigrate to Norway. I couldn’t find an engineering job after I moved, so I took a job delivering groceries.

    Apartment blocks in many Oslo neighborhoods are less than 5 floors, so they don’t have elevators.

    Hauling many liters of milk and other essentials up many flights of stairs 35 times in 8 hours while keeping a schedule is the hardest I have worked.

    Now I’m an engineering consultant.

    Do you think there are "normal" people? If so, what constitutes normal? If not, why not?

    Octale,
    @Octale@nerdculture.de avatar

    @RickiTarr Yep. If you could create some sort of holistic “normalcy” index for people, 95-98% of people would fall within 2 standard deviations of the mean.

    There’s a desperation to be “special” that’s derived from a catastrophic lack of purpose in people’s lives. We also don’t really celebrate our individual skills, abilities, beliefs, etc., preferring to subjugate them to tribe.

    This effing narrative right here. Jill Stein didn’t cost Her Holiness the 2016 election. Not going to Wisconsin for the ENTIRE election cycle cost Her Holiness the election. Laughing at the death of a head of state cost Her Holiness the election. AND BEING HER HOLINESS DID MORE THAN ANY OF THOSE OTHER THINGS TO COST HER HOLINESS THE ELECTION.

    @flexghost I’m going to follow this up. Did you ever notice how none of the people who pushed the dumbass “sexism and Soviets” narrative for the 2016 election could square the circle re: Tulsi Gabbard? She was, by far, the most presidential person on the 2020 primary debate stage, and when she told the truth about VP Harris’s record, she was summarily destroyed by MSNBC and CNN. Not a peep about sexism was heard, almost if the sexism claims in 2016 were a fabrication.
