German pastry is so incredibly bottom tier. What is even a Donauwelle or a Bihnenstich!? It doesn’t sound like a good thing.

The plethora of bad choices make it so that I always pick the wrong thing. I don’t even have a goto or a rule of thumb.

@alper every time! 😆 I try to branch out and try something new but it's basically always disappointing. Especially the whole trick of it looking good on top and then you find out it's crappy sponge underneath.

Let's not even get started on cakes so dry they turn to dust under your fork.

Me, a normal person: I should get some compressed air to clean my keyboard and other bits and bobs, but buying a can seems wasteful, I should look into desk-compressors, no wait a second, how many cans do I have to buy to make up for the eco footprint of a compressor or hat I will rarely use and will I come out net negative or positive on either approach and can I trust any research on this not to come from one or the other lobby, it’s been years and I should really dust my keyboard.

It turns out that I thought was unusually secure in 2023 but instead the RoR security mailing list has been silently(?) discontinued. (https://groups.google.com/g/rubyonrails-security)

I'm hopefully not the only geriatric millennial Rails dev still subscribed to that list. Perhaps you could send out a final message to say that the forum is the new official source?

Every subscription in Germany is a criminal racket.

It's unbelievable with the "You can only cancel up to 3 months before the end of the year or you'll be a member for another year." which is usually only available in German.

Automatically extending contacts must be prohibited by law.

@alper at absolute minimum there should be a notification requirement before the renewal can't be stopped. Of course the 3 month deadline makes no sense either.

Forbidding automatic renewal completely would cause issues. Like gas going to the expensive provider of last resort if you forget to renew it!

There's a minimum width of 14 cm for an international €1.10 stamp, at 13.5 cm you need to pay €1.70.

@jon whoah, you can pay by Visa or Mastercard at that Bürgeramt! It's EC-Card only at my nearest one.

Except I went to check that was still the case... and now their page says simultaneously that "Visa etc. card payments are possible" and "only with EC-Karte". I've written to them to ask them to pick one!

And your assumption is correct in my experience about the opening times. Document pick-up is handled by reception staff.

My "this should be built in" quality of life improvements include unlocking display rotation when the photos app is open and avoiding "your battery is low" prompts by preempting them.

I’ve enjoyed watching my British-Australian wife get to know southern Germany for the first time. She’s bowled over by the civic amenities and the quality of life. We spent our last afternoon in a typical community Freibad (open air swimming complex), entry to this superb facility was a pittance and we were almost alone on a sunny Saturday in August.

@ottocrat it is somewhat more justified in Berlin unfortunately! Where basic civil provision is terrible. Even just swimming pools... Many inside pools are shut due to staff "moving" to outside pools, which are so overcrowded that riots happen 😞

I couldn’t order for pickup with Wolt so I went to the McDo to buy our dinner in person. There I found out that the exact same order was €5 cheaper.

Add €3,50 delivery costs and tip and the savings get quite significant (30% or so).

@alper I've noticed quite a few restaurants have higher prices on the apps, maybe a euro or so per item. I mostly pick-up but love the convenience of not ordering on the phone. I wonder what cut the apps take.

There are more and more people in Germany who are willing to vote for the , a super right-wing party. In Germany, out of all places. In some states, they would be the biggest party if there was a vote now. This worries me A LOT. And the CDU and FDP together with the Bild tabloid are basically putting more fuel into that fire.

This Monday is a rather bleak one.
