Linux and *BSD user, hardware and software tinkerer, A bit inept.
I wanna make non-violent videogames, but despite programming for years, I have basically zero programming skills, and refuse to use a premade engine.

I realize I'm a Luddite, pessimist, and idealist. But good god, listening to people who think AI is gonna fix everything by automating pointless paperwork and turning cars into the world's least efficient trains, is fucking exhausting.

What the hell ever happened to being allowed to ignore my computer's advice?

What if I trust the website, and I know the cert has expired, or TLS is just being an ass? What if I want to use a "weak" or no password? Etc.

It's my computer, and I have my reasons.

Looking at old pagers and cassette players and stuff; Man things used to be so designed for purpose.

Like, there was no "get a message, struggle your phone out, wait for it to wake up, accidentally put it back to sleep, wake it up again, unlock it, open notifications, accidentally clear notifications, look through apps to see which one gave the notification, find it, close it and reopen it because it's frozen, "an error occurred".

Just, "get a notification, look down at your belt, done"

New post: "The Toxicity Dance"

This one may trigger some, but I tried to make it very impartial.

Shout out to the excellent @joel for tone-checking it for me before I published it.

@RL_Dane ...Is my thought process this time. If I read it again and feel like replying, I'll probably have a different line of reasoning every time. I've got the consistency of of a true RNG :P

It's a serious flaw I have that genuinely leads me to just debating myself and the things I've said moments earlier on and on ad-nausium.
But I digress, and this was absolutely not the time and place to have an existential crisis...

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@RL_Dane I have had people yell at me trying to convince me of the very opinion I shared, simply because I implied it was possible they might be offended by my sharing of my opinion :P

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@RL_Dane I think this is a problem every "community" has, as I hear the same thing about every interest I have. I tend to avoid considering interests as "communities" because of it

I'm just a weirdo who likes to listen to the music I like to listen to, I fiddle with computer stuff that intrigues me, watch children's media, etc. I'll probably blabber on about it, and anyone who likes can sure listen. If I offend I'll probably apologize profusely if I know you get reflexively defensive if I don't

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@RL_Dane The majority of people I meet here are quite decent. Even many of the people I get into arguments are decent except when we both happen to collide at just the wrong mood it seems

What in the world is wrong with this machine?

Something as simple as syncthing running, an apt upgrade, or even just doing a dd of a gigabyte from /dev/zero to a junk file can cause the system load to scream up to 10 (quad-core system), and it starts freezing.

Do I have a dodgy SSD???

Update 1: I am using full disk encryption (LUKS)

Update 2: gsmartcontrol output https://bin.benjaminhollon.com/fersimebia

Update 3: I'm going to try copying everything over to a spare SSD later.

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@RL_Dane I'm not saying it's definitely related to the encryption. On account of I'm a know nothing moron with no right to say anything for sure.

But I've had no end of problems with disk encryption. But then, I'm a know nothing moron, so that is the expected thing to happen with anything I touch.

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@RL_Dane Are you using disk encryption or software raid?

I've used both, and I do not recommend either for this and other reasons. Especially not both at once.

Also make sure you've got plenty of free space. Modern file systems absolutely freak the hell out if you don't have plenty of free space.

Ok, the way the search/launcher menu on highlights an item in random as you're typing a search query (instead of highlighting the top item) so that it often opens a random file instead of the most likely match drives me NUTS.

I should just use more often, as it doesn't seem to have that quirk.

I wonder if fixes that.

Ok, as broken as youtube is on a low res screen, it's even more unusable on a high res screen, as the "includes payed promotion" banner that only appears once your cursor is hovering over the video thumbnail, is nearly as big as the video thumbnail, and takes you to a useless help page instead of the video

OpenComputeDesign,

@falken @frameworkcomputer dunno then, but on my laptop with a 13" 1080P screen, that message takes up half the thumbnail

:blobwizard: You don't need a $1000 camera or an hour of traveling to take a good Aurora photo.
:ablobcatbongo: You need a tripod, patience, and a decent point and shoot that with a manual mode and RAW output.
:ablobcatwave: Set the exposure time to "forever", the ISO to "grainy" and the F-stop to "eyes dilated at optometrist."
:blobcatsanta: This one was taken in the Chicago suburbs with a tripod and a Canon PowerShot S100 at ISO 80, F2.0, and 15 second exposure, then processed in RawTherapee.

@Linux_in_a_Bit Not a bad camera that. I bought a used one for my little sister a couple years back, and I picked up a used S95 for myself as well. They're really impressive for the size, price, and age
