Linux and *BSD user, hardware and software tinkerer, A bit inept.

Man, the way folks on can be so casually cruel and hateful towards people they think represent evil things is pretty jarring, and saddening.

Like, I am absolutely not a fan of capitalism, and the words "side hustle" send me scurrying towards the nearest airsickness bag, but I see folks just lashing out and lambasting folks that are even a little bit out of line, ideologically.

Guys,
You're awesome in so many ways, but I really wish you'd not do that.

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@RL_Dane This is just a human thing, it seems. We are all guilty of hatred. And the only thing that pisses me off more than someone being rude or mean, or screwing up, is someone claiming they or they're people never do.

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that sheโ€™d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go โ€œbingโ€.

Itโ€™s about 4:30am and mumโ€™s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@Linux_in_a_Bit First phone my family ever bought was a Singular. It got just enough signal driving home from the store to activate, and never got signal again, and they wouldn't give us a refund because it was successfully activated. Next was a tracfone, which almost got signal sometimes. Then, we had sprint for a few years, and had signal from time to time. Then we got Verizon, and frequently had signal, and if we drove around enough, even data. So it's what we used for years and years

If the solution for preventing any kind of crime is to ban simple consumer tools used to commit them, you as a government are incredibly misguided.
Imagine your government just flat out banned power tools if there was an increase in people using them to commit crimes.
That's basically what Canada just did. :blobcatgooglytrash:
Maybe next time try dealing with the actual crime.

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@Linux_in_a_Bit This is what every government seems to be doing with every problem. I've heard that in some places, if you can't prove why you were traveling with drills and crowbars and stuff, they can potentially charge you with intent. But don't quote me on that.

But I have heard politicians claim that being allowed to use tools that could let you reverse engineer software is like being allowed to walk into a store and buy tools that could be used for burglary.

What the hell ever happened to being allowed to ignore my computer's advice?

What if I trust the website, and I know the cert has expired, or TLS is just being an ass? What if I want to use a "weak" or no password? Etc.

It's my computer, and I have my reasons.

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@ajn142 @AMS @falken @firefox Yeah, it's an HSTS issue for the most part. You can't skip TLS and Cert errors with HSTS, and HSTS seems to be the norm rather than the exception anymore.

I do use firefox, btw

Sometimes I forget how noisy old operating systems were.

Like, my computer now only beeps when I scroll down too far, or try to tab-autocomplete ambiguously, and duns when I clear recycle bin, or try to close without saving

But using old mac or windows, pretty much every menu, button, and dialog, produces a cacophony of clicks, bonks, swooshes, and chimes

It's weird, because on modern systems, I get annoyed at every dun and beep, but I can't help but be amused at the cartoon-y symphony of old

Reading a forum post with many replies about GPUs in Dell Optiplexes running hot :blobcat_thisisfine:

:ablobcatwave: All of the common Dell Optiplex Small Form Factor models have their x16 PCIe slot (the one that fits GPUs) right next to the power supply, instead of one slot away with clearance for airflow.

OF COURSE the GPU runs hot, it's basically suffocating :blobugh:

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@Linux_in_a_Bit I don't know why they flipped this. It used to be the other way on older models. I guess they found out people were turning their retired systems into gaming computers, and wanted to try to force their obsoleted systems to stay obsoleted.

"thanks" Dell, I used to like you

:blobcat_thisisfine: Why does X11 ALWAYS open fullscreen apps and games on the leftmost monitor?

:ablobcatgrumpy: No matter which monitor has focus or which monitor is the primary monitor it always happens.

:blobugh: On Gnome I could deal with it because of that nice "Activities" view (the one thing I liked about Gnome), but this shouldn't even be a problem in 2024.

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@BrodieOnLinux I mean, I used to go months without rebooting (I say used to, because I keep over filling my ram, and freezing my system)

The caveat I will say though is, Linux kinda sucks at suspending. It's way more stable if you just leave it running. Though to be fair, no OS has ever, and probably will ever, be as good at any low power state, as Windows XP was at hibernate. You can hibernate XP in seconds, multiple times a day every day for years, and have zero issues. No other OS can.

Montag, to amateurradio
@Montag@linuxrocks.online avatar

I often get the urge to get into because of my dislike for social media companies.

Positives: no algorithm forced on you, you're not being tracked, your information isn't sold to marketers, and the physics/engineering is fascinating.

Negatives: I know very few others who use it, I'm not interested in hearing about people's medical conditions, there's no privacy, and the only reason you're not tracked is because so few people use it.

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@Montag The no privacy, and the no entertainment broadcasts absolutely kill it for me. I don't like reusing usernames in case I socially bomb. I really don't need everyone who can hear me knowing my name and address. So the only reason I can think to use it would be to fix the fact that there are no good radio stations near me. I really miss being able to tune into an FM and hearing cool new music. But that's of course, not allowed.

OpenComputeDesign,
@OpenComputeDesign@linuxrocks.online avatar

@Montag Yeah, there are many reasons I hate the FCC. And I do understand not wanting communication lines flooded with broadcasts. But in that case, there should be amatuer broadcast bands.

Alas, the only local station is talk radio only. With the only music station being some big corporate thing a ways away.
