Study comparing health and genetic differences in settled and nomadic groups of the #Ariaal of N. #Kenya. A mutation associating to #ADHD may be favourable for the nomads.

'In modern children diagnosed with ADHD, the genetic mutation generally correlates with restlessness and distractibility. And in those Ariaal children who had settled into sedentary Western behaviours, the gene was linked to poor health and distracted classroom behaviours. But in those Ariaal who still practised a traditional nomadic life, the gene mutation was linked to strength and better nutritional health.'

Very interesting review on the evolution of #postreproductive lifespan/ #menopause question. It argues that for certain highly #encephalised species (Late Pleistocene humans, and some whales) there is a need of 'intensive screening' and quality control of #oocyte mitochondria. We think this attack on understanding #humanorigins by Stefanos #Geroulanos is junk. Almost everything about it is wrong.

The idea that our bodies, minds and emotions are only affected by the last 5000 years is profoundly stupid -- once again social scientists trying to pretend #evolution doesn't exist (Am looking at #Graeber/Wengrow there).

Take this bit 🤦:
'But in reality, our bodies, our economic systems, our social relations, our family relations, and our politics have very little to do with this longer history [=species life] and a great deal to do with the much shorter one [=farming/patriarchy]'

This is a real mashup: our bodies, minds, hearts and souls have been shaped through thousands on thousands of generations of egalitarian nomadic lifestyle -- we need to know about that to challenge the constraints of heinous inequality in emerging class societies. Yes these shifted gender, economic and social relations of the past 5000 years. But we don't lose the cognitive and emotional skill set of being human overnight, or even in a few thousand years of warfare and patriarchy..

Lovely short essay on community #guardianship of #biodiversity in #Indian sacred spaces, and the threats these face.

"We were standing in a sacred grove, or devrai, once a commonplace phenomenon across the rural Indian landscape (CPR Environmental Education Centre, n.d). These patches of forests are considered holy by nearby communities and associated with a locally revered deity. Rules and norms crafted by the elders prohibit anyone from using any produce from the forest, thus naturally allowing for the spaces to become unofficial preserves for flora and fauna. Sacred groves are like nature’s library."

"Newer ideas of sacred need to also emerge from partnerships between scientists and native communities, along with economies that are mindful of the ideas of limits and reciprocity. Another paper taking issue with the trendy 'Woman the hunter' arguments. #Martin et al say:
'...we strongly disagree with a central premise that appears to motivate this scholarship: that the idea of evolved gendered subsistence activities derives largely from incorrect assumptions extrapolated from patriarchal norms today and/or rationalizations of “implicit male superiority” based solely on anatomical gender differences. Such claims are belied by extensive ethnographic and human behavioral ecology research across multiple extant foraging societies. These studies document the near universality of gendered divisions of labor, with women's large-scale participation in hunting occurring only in specific societies (i.e., the Agta) or contexts (i.e., small-game hunting) (Bird, 1999; Hoffman, Farquharson, & Venkataraman, 2023).'
