The Scotland is better off British fraud goes very deep indeed. From the name, the flag, the monarch, the anthem, the UN, the treatment of our fellow Celts in Wales and Cornwall only one country benefits from this unequal union and it's not us.

ScotInTraining,

@freescotlandnow I honestly believe that the corruption in English politics is so deep, so entrenched, that the only way Scotland will be free of it is by independence.

Or in other words England's political system is irredeemable.

A small but significant global movement is seeking to make free to use as a central plank to urbanism.

as the Guardian point out:

'Flourishing & accessible public transport systems are an essential feature of sustainable 21st-century living. They are a means of social inclusion & wellbeing, helping to generate a sense of place and collective belonging'!

Being free from fares can be a big part of this... but in the UK we're wedded to an altogether different model!

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 public transport is free in Scotland for everyone under the age of 22, plus some other groups.

Absolutely brilliant resource, just a wave of a young scot card and they are off on their travels,.

Of course it should be free to everyone (just like healthcare!)

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 and before anyone says it wouldn't work in rural communities. We live in the Highlands, and the bus service is better than when we lived next to the A1 in England

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@bluGill @ChrisMayLA6 you make a good point but to move people onto public transport, to really change behaviour long term, I think it being free would be a big motivator for the group that can afford cars.

Yes it will also need to be reliable, clean, relatively frequent.

We need to "sell" public transport to people, and making it free would be a huge psychological lever.

And it needs to be carbon neutral as well.

Why is authoritarianism/fascism on the rise?

Because liberalism has failed us, delivering vast inequality and climate catastrophe.

More liberalism is not the answer, it's fuel on the flames of fascism. What we need is a political economy that distributes the resources, costs and benefits of being human fairly in our society. Our time is short before the world is burned in the name of profits

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@steviesyerda have we learned nothing from Star trek TNG?

The vision of the future was that people worked at a job because they liked it and were good at it, everyone had enough food, were housed and consumerism and billionaires a thing of the past.

What was valued was cooperation and integrity

This is the future that I aspire to. Not some bleak post apocalyptic difficult life on a dying rock.

@MadeyeTheCarnaptious As an ex English immigrant to Scotland, life in Scotland is better and fairer

FWIW I am lucky enough to (just) be in the higher tax band. And I am proud to pay it. I knew I would be in that band before we emigrated

My council tax on a 3 bed in Cambridgeshire was more than my council tax on a 4 bed in Scotland. And it includes water up here

The tories are riled. They know Scotland is heading towards independence and they are finding anything to show "Scotland bad"

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@peterbrown @MadeyeTheCarnaptious I do like Graham Nortons take on it.
We can either build a security wall round our houses or we can pay taxes and make sure we don't need one.

ScotInTraining, to random
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

Ah! That's the tories plan! After ensuring labour go down a "backing brexit" route, the tories will fight the next election on returning into the EU.

Thus the tories bid at the next election is they will save us from the current tory government who for 13 years have screwed the country.

Someone high up has noted there's money to be made by rejoining. Not for us plebs but for the billionaires

To be fair it's probably the only policy they can bring in that may stop their annihilation at the GE

For the pursuit of ever more profits our lives have become needlessly complex. For example think of a modern car with electronic lights and censors for tyres and all sorts of other things. Each of these is a system which can fail and so will need repaired. The alternative would be a car which is far simpler with less to go wrong and so less chance to extract money from us. It similar logic to making things which fail and will need replaced. The corporate world isn't on our side.

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@JackTheCat @IndyRichard the EU are introducing a "right to repair" law.

ScotInTraining, to random
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

I think the biggest threat to the environment, quality of life, the NHS, Human rights, and general decency is conservative party ideology.

Acting against the populations best interests for self gain should be seen for what it is. It is an illness. Anyone who does this lacks something fundamental in being human.

It is time we stopped voting them in to power and started rehabilitation for them.

IndyRichard, to random
@IndyRichard@mastodon.scot avatar

Why do people in England not want independence? Their great Brexit slogan was about taking their country back but I see no demands for a free England. Do some still cling to ideas of Empire and Scotland, Wales and the north of Ireland some of final parts of when England was a world power? Even from before Brexit this clearly no longer true. It feels like a desperate aging aunt clinging on for reasons of rosy retrospection. Maybe it because of fear? I just don't understand.

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@IndyRichard I moved up from England as I was politically homeless, and for a better life (Scotland, naturally, has delivered on both).

There is a big chunk of englanders actually believe England is still the best in the world, despite all the evidence. A good proportion believe the press that reinforces it.

Part of this is believing that Scotland, Wales, NI WANT to be in an union and benefit from it, how could they not? England is the best in the world

And so the delusion continues

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@IndyRichard you may have gathered I am pro-indy!

It is very clear that the Scottish people have very different political beliefs than the English. Scots are much more left wing. And I believe this is best served by an independent Scotland

What concerns me is the thought that we will be "given" independence. The goalposts shift every time we move closer to it. We saw that this week with the "brexit should have been a supermajority" line

Independence will need to be seized, it won't be given

ScotInTraining, to random
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

Call me cynical but I am starting to think alot of these Westminster "failures" (test and trace, HS2 etc) are not, in fact, failures....

Yes they "failed" at what we were told they were for....

But if you flip it on to its head and think the whole purpose was to syphon public money into private hands, then these are resounding successes.

It makes sense of it, and the appalling mis management.

I am thinking Westminster is beyond redemption. Scotland must get its independence as a priority.

In Pompeii; Penises can be found not only as graffiti roughly drawn and carved onto public walls, but built into the roads as well.

It is guessed that phallic symbols on the streets point towards nearest brothel, to direct foreign sailors who may be heavily intoxicated and/or unable to speak the local language.
