Its been clear for ages that many public service cuts are false economies.... as a friend of mine pointed out some time ago, if you cut early intervention & prevention services (which can be relatively cheap & effective), you then enlarge the demand for more expensive (and often mandatory) crisis services....

A new IFS study that looked at closing police stations, suggests, likewise that every £1 saved by closing a location increased social costs by £3!

@jwi @ChrisMayLA6 @tkinias I think you are right to a point.

You will always need both, people get sick and will need hospital. People are awful and will need prison.

However using either to solve societies ills is wrong.

Better health promotion, better social care, earlier intervention and people will be better.

However I definitely agree that both locking people up isn't the answer and if we solved societal problems, then we wouldn't need as many prison spaces

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@jwi @ChrisMayLA6 @tkinias an excellent example is homelessness in Finland.

Spend less than we do and has functionally ended homelessness.

I think it comes back to Graham Norton quote on taxes "we can spend money to build a wall or pay taxes so we don't have to" ie life is better for all if we properly fund societal improvement

There is some irony at listening to Starmer urging an election to "Let the people decide", the same Starmer who does not recognise Scotland's right to have a referendum to "Let the people decide". Yes, indeed, we had one in 2014 but materially, the UK has changed. We have elections every five years yet Scotland is continually denied democracy by, in effect, a foreign country, England. Is the union voluntary, yes it is, how then does Scotland leave ?

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@CloudyMrs @MadeyeTheCarnaptious @Roadwarrior29 very interesting.

We saw, and initially believed the disinformation. However talking to my brother in Edinburgh the agenda and truth didn't match.

Then we started looking at what SNP were doing and more importantly the attitude in politics.

Holyrood cares about and for its people, Westminster see them as purely their route to power, and does not care if they live or die.

Attitude is why we moved to Scotland

@Geri so they stack the system against workers. They remove workers rights. Raise inflation, cut health service, cut benefits. Blame the poor, then have the brass balls to complain about MH.

Anyone who is long term sick isn't delighted about it.

Then they have rigged the system that if you are off sick, support is so poor you will end up with anxiety or depression.

If heat pumps are part of the answer for how the UK makes a green transition, then the (next) Govt. needs to do a better job of supporting & incentivising their roll-out.

To reach the current target of 600k heat pumps installed a year by 2028, the installation rate would need to rise 11-fold... delays & shifting policy will not achieve that.

@ChrisMayLA6 we need to copy Germany on this one.

People are willing to swap but the installation is expensive.

Germany charged people €1 under a government scheme to swap.

Remove the massive installation costs and people will swap. The truth is that people are barely keeping their head above water with the running costs of gas/ oil and just don't have the money to fund the install.

''none of this parliamentary rhetoric about extremism & MP safety has been mobilised to protect Diane Abbott after the Conservative’s biggest donor said he wanted to shoot her. Quite the opposite; the system has moved to shield Frank Hester, a poor man who made a little mistake & needs to be given grace and compassion'!

Last year 10% of scheduled operations by the NHS, were actually undertaken by 'independent' providers (read private health care).

As more & more of us despair at delays to care & take out (or have employers take out) private health insurance (or find ways to pay for medical attention), so the Tories normalisation of a two-tier health care system become ever more real.

The Tory project of NHS as basic safety net for the poor becomes ever nearer.

@Andy_European I am going to respectfully disagree. Not because of what you are saying, politics is a cess pit and it would take alot to surprise me.

However for Westminster elections we have a first past the post system. Whilst the majority of people are not tories they can still get in by having the most, but still a minority, of the votes.

It is vital people vote tactically and get the tories out. They are the bigger threat

So tell us, imposed Prime Minister @RishiSunak: which unruly mob has been in charge of Law & Order in the UK for the last fourteen years?

I suggest if you wish to see Britain return to democratic rule, rather than calling on the police to arrest everyone who is in the slightest way disgruntled by your policies, you resign and call a General Election; because you have neither the will nor the ability to manage this country.

ScotInTraining,

@RussCheshire @RishiSunak
The tories are a wounded party. And therefore very dangerous.

They know they will lose badly at the next election so will stay in power as long as possible.

They want to stay in power so they can continue to gain as much for themselves as possible.

They are getting lower and lower in their behaviour.

This is a very worrying time for democracy as they will do whatever they can to hold on.

A wonderfully curved 1860s blonde sandstone tenement on the corner of Wilton Street and Belmont Street in the West End of Glasgow.

For me, nice, sweeping curves are one of the major features missing from many modern buildings. I've often wondered if this is because straight-edged boxes are much easier to draw with the Computer-Aided Design software now used by many architects.

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@thisismyglasgow as the chap from penguin books famously said "good design costs the same as bad design".

I suspect its more to do with the cost of building and materials. Square brick boxes will always be cheaper than beautiful curved stone buildings.

However one brings joy and is good for the soul, the other brings blandness and indifference.

A small but significant global movement is seeking to make free to use as a central plank to urbanism.

as the Guardian point out:

'Flourishing & accessible public transport systems are an essential feature of sustainable 21st-century living. They are a means of social inclusion & wellbeing, helping to generate a sense of place and collective belonging'!

Being free from fares can be a big part of this... but in the UK we're wedded to an altogether different model!

ScotInTraining,
@ScotInTraining@mastodon.scot avatar

@bluGill @ChrisMayLA6 you make a good point but to move people onto public transport, to really change behaviour long term, I think it being free would be a big motivator for the group that can afford cars.

Yes it will also need to be reliable, clean, relatively frequent.

We need to "sell" public transport to people, and making it free would be a huge psychological lever.

And it needs to be carbon neutral as well.
