52-year-old bear. I do the things men can't resist, like being archivist for old comedy groups Firesign Theatre and Duck's Breath Mystery Theatre, and the band Negativland.

And don't miss this old blog entry by light tech Nook Schoenfeld, with stories from the film production and the tour including how his dog accidentally joined David onstage for "Psycho Killer" on opening night in Vermont.

Cornell professor and all-around swell guy Jeremy Braddock has written a fantastic scholarly appraisal of the Firesign Theatre's classic albums and why they're important, as literature, innovative sound design, and surrealist brain candy. His research skills are impeccable - I've been listening to Firesign for decades and Jeremy's work here has me looking at their work in a totally new light. Coming in October, now available for pre-order!

There's a show about Tom Lehrer called "Tom Lehrer Is Teaching Math and Doesn't Want to Talk to You" playing in London through next Sunday, and I hope it comes to Los Angeles soon.

Delighted to say I have actually talked to Tom once; maybe 15 years ago Firesign Theatre was on tour and I rang him up in Santa Cruz to say he was on the comp list for their San Jose gig (don't know if he came; I doubt it!).

@pluralistic I have a fun mystery for the Cory-nauts.

Don Joyce of Negativland liked to tape Art Bell. I found a show where Art is talking to Whitley Streiber (“Communion”) and taking calls when something strange happens: every 45 seconds, they start hearing a phone auto-dialer.

Art is flummoxed: “Somebody's breaking in on our line…this last half hour is the most puzzling I've ever done on radio.”

I checked the phone tones and the number is: 1-800-468-3445

When Googled, there are no results.

SidFudd,
@SidFudd@4bear.com avatar

@garygouldsberry @pluralistic It's actually an open reel, from a giant collection of open reels that as their archivist I am now digitizing. These reels mostly contain raw material Don taped off radio & TV which later appeard on "Over the Edge" or the albums. There's about 250 reels & after four months I'm almost half done

SidFudd,
@SidFudd@4bear.com avatar

@garygouldsberry @pluralistic These are primarily for Negativland to spelunk for use in upcoming live shows & albums, but they may be released publicly at some point. And I must give a shout-out to Tim Maloney, Negativland's OTHER archivist, who digitized the complete Over the Edge archive and is the reason it's on Internet Archive today!

This @pluralistic paragraph is good for a laugh more bitter than radish-flavored coffee with dandelion greens.

Sometimes it's hard to tell who the enemy of the whole world is, and then sometimes, as a Navy officer told the newsreels in 1946 as he attempted to justify nuking the Bikini Islands, "The way is clear, the challenge strong, the duty inescapable." Please join me in gathering up every human being involved in and shooting them into the sun. 🚀 🌞

Gilbert Shelton/Hub City Movers "Set Your Chickens Free"

long shot - anyone have a better recording/transfer of THIS version (the original) of this song - not any of the other fine versions out there, lovely as they are. If so, please share in whatever format you can, thx

(lyricist Gilbert Shelton is the creator/artist of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, but they have nothing to do with this song really)

@ct_bergstrom Hi Carl! Greetings from Burbank, home of many crows, mourning doves, sparrows, mockingbirds, and feral parrots. I love crows & say hi to them every chance I get. Can you give me a thumbnail description of the difference between ravens, crows, and rooks?

@pluralistic I hope this scam is real…and driven by ChatGPT.

"[sobbing hysterically] MOM I'VE BEEN KIDNAPPED, THEY'RE GONNA KILL ME UNLESS I WIRE $10,000 TO THIS NUMBER IN MEXICO"

"Oh honey, that's awful! Before I send the money can you do me a favor and list every variety of quark and their corresponding antiparticles?"

"[still sobbing hysterically] I'D BE GLAD TO, THERE ARE SIX QUARKS, UP DOWN CHARM STRANGE TOP AND BOTTOM. ANTIQUARKS HAVE EQUAL PROPERTIES BUT OPPOSITE SIGNS—"

My phone rang the other day and a voice said: "I've got good news and bad news. Whaddya want first?"

I said "Gimme the bad news."

"The bad news is that humanity is basically paranoid and hostile and addicted to expediency, and one day it will use up all available resources and wipe itself out, and leave the Earth to the squirrels."

"What's the good news?"

"My name's Daisy, and I'm a squirrel."

Negativland were guests this morning on our Uncle Ken's show on WFMU! A truly classic conversation about the Right using culture jamming for evil, AI companies putting Fair Use in an acid bath, getting the dead members of the band back into their live shows thanks to old tapes, and the Weatherman's fave organ records. Here's the show archive:

"...student loan forgiveness...we could just as easily call that market correction, but there’s something about the word forgiveness that implies judgment."

I never considered how rancid that phrase is. It's not cancellation, or deletion; it's "forgiveness". You erred. We're forgiving you. But it's perfect from the bank's point of view, because everyone coming to them for a loan has committed the moral error of not already having the money 😂
