    ah my wife has a different relationship with her records than mine - one time I replaced her Bangles record, it was scratchy and the cover was gross and I found a better earlier pressing in mint shape and then tossed the other out and she was like THAT'S THE ONE I HAD WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL YOU ASSHOLE

    SpaceAce,
    @SpaceAce@esoteric.party avatar

    @LikeItOrLumpIt I WOULD LOVE IF SOMEONE DID THAT to something I had in rough shape haha but yeah I never did that again

    what i did in the kitchen today haha sounds lame - i replaced the whole LED bulb fixture, that's it, unscrewed some screws and tore out some wires and attached em to something else and put screws in - but all done standing on my tiptoes on a stepladder, on the top where i don't think you're supposed to go, my wife holding me steady 'cause i was nervous, jamming a screwdriver to the roof. but it's done now and the sun is down and the test! - i turned on the lights and SO BRIGHT! very happy

    this is a - this is an aside from something @RickiTarr was talking about but her threads get huge and don't need a billion tangents.
    The sound of a banjo means something VERY DIFFERENT to british and american music.
    In America of course the banjo is like - appalachia, mountain people, bluegrass, "down home", whatever. It's very RURAL
    In Britain the banjo was a massive instrument in music hall music - think "I"m Henry The 8th I Am" which was an old music hall tune... it is classy, old fashioned

    SpaceAce,
    @SpaceAce@esoteric.party avatar

    @RickiTarr it's indeed a world instrument for sure. I was listening to some orchestral pop, straight up 100 piece orchestral pop songs and from a British musician and hearing banjo in there which struck me as dumb until I remembered the music hall.
    The Kinks have banjo on some of their 60s records but not for anything that sounds American, the really really really British sounding stuff!

    SpaceAce,
    @SpaceAce@esoteric.party avatar

    @logickal @RickiTarr
    That song is like 100 years old
    I personally love Herman's Hermits and that song

    SpaceAce,
    @SpaceAce@esoteric.party avatar

    @logickal @RickiTarr i deleted what i said about the guitar at the beginning - the song where the guitar is strummed like a banjo is MRS BROWN YOU'VE GOT A LOVELY DAUGHTER which is another music hall straw hat boating pants song

    Okay, let me try to ask this question, in a coherent way!

    When we hear certain kinds of music, arrangements and tones, we associate them with feelings and emotions, like this sounds magical or whimsical, this sounds bouncy and happy, or dark and tragic. Do you think that is this is innate, like the combination of certain notes and tones just illicit these feelings in most people or is it because we've seen it related to these kinds of emotions on the radio or in movies and TV?

    SpaceAce,
    @SpaceAce@esoteric.party avatar

    @RickiTarr on one hand, a major vs minor scale DOES feel happy/sad no matter what the timbre right? But on the other hand we have 1000+ years of Western music to fall back on. I always wondered if people who listen to non-12 tone music, like people from India with their rich musical history, what emotions are evoked by the different scales ,etc.
    I mean I'll accept almost any answer someone tells me. I do think some of the saddest songs use only major chords! (ex: I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry)

    SpaceAce,
    @SpaceAce@esoteric.party avatar

    @RickiTarr no. I think we all have our musical tastes and background and personal associations.
    Think of your own history with music. Me for instance found Mahler boring for about 4 decades and now I get all weepy and emotional listening to his 5th symphony. Our own goosebumps change based on our time on the planet etc so how can we expect someone else to mirror us?

    I've noticed an increase in mean/rude behavior towards the people in my comments sections lately, and I'm going to start putting my foot down about it. So, here's a guide:

    It is totally okay to correct misinformation, but there is a way to do it.

    1. Make sure your information is actually correct, and you have valid links supporting your argument.

    2. Calling people or their thoughts stupid or any other similar thing is not okay, no one knows everything, and acceptable terms change frequently, so please keep this in mind.

    3. Treat people how you would like to be treated if you were incorrect or misinformed about something. Assume the best about people, and let them prove themselves one way or another.

    4. A private message to the person directly is usually a much better tactic than calling them out publicly, and embarrassing them.

    Opinions are not facts, telling someone they are wrong about things like, food they eat, music they listen to, or movies they watch is ridiculous. This is about individual preference, and has nothing to do with facts. Your own take a certain topic might be better to do on your personal account, than just tacking it on to someone else's. Some fun joking around is fine, as long as everyone understands that is what it is.

    Violating anyone's civil rights is wrong, whether we like them or not.

    Talking negatively about the way someone looks or anything else they can't help, even if we don't like what they do, is also wrong. Let's not become they thing we are fighting against.

    Make sure what you're reading isn't satire/sarcasm/humor, and check the context, sometimes you might be reading a comment in a long line of comments.

    Nuance in text is infamously hard to understand sometimes, misunderstandings are incredibly common, people have different ways of speaking and reacting, and I definitely understand that, but if someone tells you that what you're saying is not welcome or applicable to what they are posting on their personal account, it's probably for the best to just back off. Yes, you have the right to free speech, but they also have the right to set Boundaries in their personal space. If you don't enjoy their content, and they aren't violating any rules, it would be best just to block them.

    Obviously, none of this applies to sexism, racism, LGBTQ+phobia, body shamers, and ableists, but even in that situation, sometimes it's better just to block and report than engage. The quickest way to stop poison is to get rid of the poison. People change their own minds, you can't do it for them.

    Just don't be a dick, I love posting here, and want it to be a positive experience for everyone who interacts with my posts. I'd also like maintain a certain amount of my own mental health. So, if you insist on continuing rude and harassing behavior, I will be forced to block you.

    So, who should play the Beatles in the Biopics?

    SpaceAce,
    @SpaceAce@esoteric.party avatar

    @RickiTarr absolute unknowns. These are gonna be weird movies.
    There's an Australian Beatles biopic set in the pre-fame part of their career (much like Backbeat) which was a TV movie and really fantastic, late 70s and they barely looked like the Beatles but had good actors, a decent script and really good set design, do it like a complete period film imo make it grimy.
