Thought. I have always run warm. I do feel the cold, but not as much as most people. I hate (detest?) overheated department stores. This got worse with the onset of perimenopause, & I was unable to wear jumpers for years, because I couldn’t get them off quickly enough during hot flushes, which threatened spontaneous combustion. This settled somewhat after finally going on HRT.

I’ve noticed a change since going on ADHD meds. I now wear winter pjs on a “cool” summers night, & a nightie on warmer ones & am more likely to don a jacket of an evening.

I’m wondering whether this is a consequence of the meds, & overheating is related to ADHD. @actuallyautistic

For many years I have been conscious of frequently swapping from normal glasses to prescription sunglasses & back again… much more than most people. Someone said something recently about their own sensitivity to light & the need to wear really dark glasses a lot of the time. I’m not so much really sensitive to light, as liking a very narrow range of light, not too bright, not too dark. But both, I’m guessing, are indications of light sensitivity experienced by autistic folk. Who knew? @actuallyautistic

Currently reading Devon Price’s Unmasking Autism, which I borrowed from the library. I’d read mixed reviews, but am finding it interesting, informative & helpful. @actuallyautistic

Question. Some dogs can tell if a person has cancer, presumably by their smell. Does anyone think that some autistic people might be more sensitive to such changes in body chemistry? Not as much as a dog, but more than most other people? @actuallyautistic

Okay, challenge. I can play basic computer games like Tetris for ages, but give me an audio only pod cast, & my mind wanders off. I’m about to listen to another Newsreader podcast, which I love, but it’s a struggle. Any hints? @actuallyautistic

44 years ago today since I found my father, comfortably “asleep” in his armchair, with the golf playing on the tv. I was 19, & having lost my mother the year before, had to grow up fast & take charge.

A nice development. The family of a student from Ukraine who I worked with last year has moved into the flats across the road. Today her mother came across & in very broken English, asked if I could teach her. The normal system for migrants & refugees hasn’t been working well during Covid, especially for someone with a 3yo. I was thrilled! She asked about cost & I shook my head. Now I’ll have to make up some resources. While the focus will be on her, I’m hoping we can involve the 3yo a little too. And hopefully I can get the older child to speak English more at home, although preserving her native language is also important.

Period products are free in Victorian schools & should be free throughout the country.

A question for followers who are not autistic or ADHD. Given that I post & engage in discussions about a lot of different topics, would you prefer that I confine these discussions to a separate dedicated account, which you would be welcome to follow if you find it interesting/educational? Some people run 2 accounts to avoid “outing themselves” to the wider world, which might might them vulnerable to discrimination & unpleasantness at work or with friends or family members who have not accepted & supported their neurodiverse status. I’m retired, but I haven’t yet “outed” myself to many people in my circles, most of whom aren’t (yet) on mastodon. However I’m afraid that if I ran 2 separate accounts, I’d keep forgetting one & miss out on what I get from the people on that account. (Of course there will be some who have already muted me, & that’s fine too!😂😂😂)

Here I am, in my 60s, & only really waking up to the extent that the values & attitudes of a dominant culture shape our actions. Even when the people who have set those things aren’t people “like us”. This is why it can take so long to throw off the ignorance & bigotry of the past. As children, we absorb those things, even if they go against own nature, or our own interests. Women will sometimes support the patriarchy. Aspirational working class people will sometimes support economically conservative politicians. A child who feels strongly about social justice might grow into a “well meaning” adult who does “good” things in a patronising or paternalistic manner. If & when we realise such things, we have to confront them & decide whether to shake them off & learn new ways, or respond defensively, fighting to stay the same. And if it’s the latter, who are we going to hurt? Those who need our support? Our family? Ourselves?

Clearly people who think their eyesight is fine need to be getting checked.

So today we jumped on a ferry to Greenwich Point, walked along the coast, found a lovely cafe for brunch, then ferry back to Circular Quay & refreshments in The Rocks. Not too shabby.

View of a harbour inlet, through the bush, from a coastal track.
Dark ale, the remains of pork pie & pickle, & a Chardonnay.

Voted today. A few “No against division” people, but more yes including new local member for that (neighbouring) electorate. I was gruffer than I meant to be with the people handing out “No” leaflets. Was nice to chat briefly with Michelle Ananda Rajah, who was much happier & more relaxed than when I saw her in May ‘22.

Used my new cookbook yesterday, by @Kon & his mum. My dishes didn’t look as amazing as the photos in his lovely book, but tasted great. Zucchini salad surprisingly tasty. #Cooking #Vegetarian

A grains salad, zucchini salad & stuffed eggplant with bechamel.
And with pistachio!

So Australia is about a decade behind in its transition to renewable energy. A decade. Is that significant in some way?

Just glanced at Facebook. Old school “friend” trying to tell me how good J Price is on referendum. Same woman supported Trump, wouldn’t get vax boosters or mask, thinks Proud Boys are misunderstood. Sheesh.

@Susan60@aus.social avatar

So a word. Solar installers have access to aerial photos which tells them a lot of what they need to know to give you a quote, but not enough. Small but significant details can make a big difference.

Interesting conversation with someone with similar basic values as my own, but determined to criticise, judge & attack. I’ve been there. The anger & frustration that build up & spew out. It’s alienating & destructive. When there is a possibility of common ground, it’s a starting point. I’m not saying that compromises are always justified. Sometimes strong stands need to be made. But assuming a moral superiority & attempting to belittle all those whom don’t join you on that supposed moral high ground isn’t going to get things done.

I’m learning about my “inner voice”. Apparently for some people, it’s the voice that switches on when they’re pondering, preparing for a conversation/lecture/performance/interview etc. But for others, it’s always on, unless thoroughly engaged with an external stimulus. It’s what might distract us from a boring task, lecture, conversation, TV show etc. Or it might make a boring task possible. Or it might be really irritating, making us tired & short tempered.

It’s great that we’re making compostable plastic (is it really), but does any of it reach an industrial composter?
